As sometimes happens on mailing lists, this thread has gone in a circle. So let me try to summarize:
1) You need some kind of hardware close enough to the command station to connect to it.
2) There are several kinds that will work.
2A) A terminal server (a box that connects a network to a serial port) will let the remote computer connect through the terminal server to the command station
2B) A computer, such as a Raspberry Pi or spare PC, can connect to the command station and also to the remote computer
3) _Either_ of those will work. They¡¯re different solutions, but they both work. RPis are so cheap that they might be less cost than a terminal server, depending on where you get them.

Hi Paul - So what I hear you (and others) saying and/or inferring is that an additional computer is needed whether it be Raspberry pi or some other second computer. My original question was whether a system could be configured without the need for a second computer and that my NCE command station could connect wirelessly to my remote laptop where JMRI resides.
