With the Mac you are simply dragging the distributed JMRI folder from the .dmg file to your Applications folder. Since you can't rename a folder on a disk image (Readonly) you'll have to rename the old one in /Applications before dragging. Once in /Applications, you can rename either folder as you wish (it may ask you to authenticate).
Both JMRI versions will use the same preferences and User Files in ~/Preferences/JMRI .

With a Mac, multiple installed versions are trivial:
- Simply rename the JMRI folder you dragged to the Applications folder to e.g. JMRI V4.6.
- Drag a new JMRI version to the Applications folder and rename it to e.g. JMRI V4.8.
-DO NOT rename the ~/Library/Preferences/JMRI folder. That will not work
