Thunderbolt Docks 23
A while ago I asked about storage needs on a new Mac mini M4 Pro. Well the impending tariffs made me pull the trigger and get it the day before tariffs were announced. I went for the Mac mini M4 Pro with 64GB RAM and 1TB Storage. Happy Birthday to me as I turned 70 the day after I placed the order. I¡¯m working on enclosures to get some of the drives out of my 2012 Mac Pro - the 4TB NVME that¡¯s on a PCIE card, a 480GB NVME that¡¯s on a PCIE card, and an 8TB TimeMachine drive in one of the SATA slots inside the machine. Now trying to figure out connections for ? 2 Displays - the Mac comes with a single HDMI port on it ? 2 OWC RAID drives that can connect by FireWire or USB 3 ? New Apple keyboard and trackpad - both are cordless, but come with USB-C charging cables that will need access ? Ancient USB Scanner and so a Dock seems like the ideal solution here. Anyone have experience with any particular brand good or bad? I¡¯ve been eyeing the OWC variety - they have 11 port Thunderbolt 4 and the 14 port Thunderbolt 3 I think either of them would deal with what I need them to as apart from the two RAID TimeMachine backup drives, and the 8TB TimeMachine backup drive the rest don¡¯t need much power or throughput. But the ThunderBolt 4 one would be a bit more future proof. The current ThunderBolt 5 dock from them only does Thunderbolt, not other connections. There are a bewildering array of of choices, mostly from companies I¡¯v¡¯e never heard of - are there other to look at apart from the OWC line that people have experience with? Thanks Roger

Apple's Vision Of The Future! 5
Back in 1987, Apple produced this video showing their vision of how computing would be in the future! It's fascinating. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umJsITGzXd0 __________________________________________________ Randy B. hyperactive hard disks 12
I have a M2 laptop, with 2 external SSD hard drives attached. Often when I come back to it, even after being away for hours, the lights are flashing like crazy and I hear what I assume are reads (and writes?) going on. Why could this be? Soundflower replacement 3
Years ago I used Soundflower to route sound playing from any source (such as a Web browser) to Audacity or really any other program. Soundflower is now defunct. Has anyone found and used a replacement? I have found some on the Web but it would be nice to get a personal recomendation. Anyone?

Storage in a Mac mini M4 Pro 11
I¡¯m pondering replacing my aging, but still very reliable pretty much fully loaded 2012 Mac Pro 5,1 (96GB RAM, 4TB SSD, RX580 video card, USB 3 card) with one of those new Mac mini M4 Pro computers. The Mac Pro The base storage is 512 GB, with the following increments available 1TB +$200 2TB +$600 4TB +$1,200 8TB +$2,400 The 4TB in my Mac Pro is currently showing about 600GB free. My Pictures folder is 2TB My Documents folder is 500GB So I¡¯m wondering with say a base 512GB Mac mini, how much free space would there be as it comes from Apple - i.e. space for applications at least, even if the Pictures and Documents were offloaded to an external drive. I certainly can¡¯t spring for 4TB in the Mac mini, but could easily do the 1TB, and probably the 2TB. I¡¯m aware of the Raycue Dock RayCue New M4/2024 Mac Mini Hub & Stand with NVMe/ M.2 SATA SSD Enclosure for All New Mac Mini M4/M4Pro raycue.com for them, and have seen another one recently but now can¡¯t find it so that would probably be a good option for fast connected external storage, or a Thunderbolt 5 drive from OWC. As you can tell when I spend this much on a computer I keep it a while, so I am prepared to pay for some degree of future proofing by getting more RAM than I perhaps need (it tops out at 64GB and I¡¯m pretty sure I¡¯ll be getting that) but the storage prices from Apple are certainly up there! Thanks Roger

Free Macintosh Software 10
Hi everyone! I'm excited to announce that my most popular Web site: FREE MACINTOSH SOFTWARE at: http://www.macattorney.com/free.html has been extensively updated, and there are now 210 pieces of free software listed!! It is an embarrassment of riches! (Or lack of riches, depending on how you look at it!) Among the updated listings are several exciting new programs which utilize artificial intelligence, business collaboration programs, an app that will allow you to run iOS apps on your Macintosh, an app to teach you keyboard shortcuts, an app that's always available to allow you to take notes, an app that will instantly transcribe dictation, etc. If you haven't gone through all of the listings recently, it's worth looking through them again. There are sure to be free apps that you will find that will prove to be invaluable, for newbies and graybeards alike. Please spread the word about the Web site to others! __________________________________________________ Randy B. Messages, Do Not Disturb, Don't Sync or Syncing Slowly Between iPhone and Mac Laptop 5
I've seen this discussion related to Contacts, which may be the same thing, but it seems that syncing via iCloud of my Mac laptops and my iPhone are much slower than in the past. If I receive messages on my iPhone, and open my laptop, the messages are not there, and may not be for a long while. If I open Messages > Settings > iMessage and click "Sync Now," it syncs later. Maybe they should change the button to "Sync Sometime In The Future." The same is true for Do Not Disturb mode. In the morning, my iPhone is on Do Not Disturb. When I open my laptop, it is not. If I turn my laptop's Do Not Disturb on, and then off, it will then turn off my iPhone's Do Not Disturb, but both used to be in sync almost instantly, but have not for many months now. My laptop is left closed overnight, plugged in, and then taken off the plug and opened in the morning, if that makes any difference. New OS bugs? Anything to be done to fix this?

Iphone names
My wife's phone keeps saying it has a new name, and the new name is me. I have 'fixed' this a few times now by going into her phone and telling it to use "my Card" in her address book. and yet just now it updated to my name again. argh. I do log into the App Store on her phone with my apple account but nothing else. (this was the set up to use before family sharing existed) any ideas why it keeps doing this? Jeff

How to CANCEL Gemini? 8
If you happen to know the 'secret' of how do I cancel or unsubscribe my subscription to Gemini I would greatly appreciate it. I have spent hours searching, Googling all the normal ways in which Gemini is billed, including the in-app 'Settings' at the bottom left there should be a way to manage or cancel but there is no entry to manage or cancel. Even in my Google One account I can see YouTube, but not Gemini. This is really frustrating. If you happen to know any tricks please advise. TIA, John

Mac mini M4 Hub and Stand!
For those of you who purchased the almost irresistible M4 Macintosh mini, you might find this hub/stand to be the perfect thing to go with it. The hub/stand fits under your mini, and it provides the missing USB-A ports that you will likely need to attach legacy printers and scanners. Plus it allows you to add an internal NVME SSD (including up to a wildly fast 40Gbps NVME), perfect for those who purchased the base-spec Mac mini! printer incompatibility 8
According to a notice from Canon, my printer will be incompatible with the next software update. I¡¯m hoping someone has a suggestion regarding what I should consider for a replacement. My needs are very simple: I print only in black & white & have almost no other uses than printing. (I¡¯m an old man with limited technical savvy). Thanks for any help! Don't Click Twice 9
I'm surprised that no one is talking about this hack attack which I learned about reading in Forbes cybersecurity article on Jan 5th here at the following URL: https://www.forbes.com/sites/daveywinder/2025/01/05/dont-click-twice-new-chrome-edge-safari-hack-attack-warning/ which may be blocked by a paywall if you don't have a Forbes subscription. I saved off an attached PDF with this post if you are blocked. As I understand, ClickJacking has been around for quite some time and most browsers have native built in protection for this. The new twist takes this devious hack to the next level, calling it Double ClickJacking. "This entirely new threat surface is exposed by the fact that hackers can trick the user of almost any website and almost any web browser into clicking something without even realizing they are doing it." or if a user is prompted to double-click on a prompt. iFrames, a window inside or on top of another window, are employed in some of these hacks. Other methods include a variety of diabolical schemes that are very concerning, if true. The good news however, unless I am misinterpreting the 30,000' view is "the user is asked to double-click on a prompt" is easy enough to avoid. Just never double-click. But is it that simple? I read the article three times but I'm not convinced the Double ClickJacking hack solution of simply never double-clicking. Is it that simple or does the article imply that the hack threat goes far beyond this simple interpretation? TIA, John

can't get to sleep
Something has happened. My computer and my screen no longer go into Sleep mode. I think it started after I turned on Focus, in an attempt to stop notifications during the duration of a movie. Xfinity/Comcast router 17
?Last week we started internet service(not TV) with Xfinity. We picked up the router from their office. My husband talked to tech support in another country. They set the wifi password. My husband hasnt been able to change the password. He called them back. They said they cant reset it. Our question is; should we try to return the router and get another one if we have no control over the password. Device type XB3 cisco mod:DPC3941T Encryption WPA WPA2 Manufactured date 6-2016

What Apple to get 24
My Apple laptop computer is now maybe 7 yrs old. I¡¯m thinking about getting a new one with more gigabytes than 500 which is what my current one has and is pretty full. The question I have is should I wait for a new model or is this a good time to now purchase a new computer? Should I get it from Apple? Should I get it from Best Buy? Or where? Thanks.
