Reliable sources of used computers.

The wife suggested that I write to the old friend to whom I was going to give an iPad Air for his birthday. ?Good idea, because while he was most appreciative of the idea, it turns out that, because of back problems, he does most of
his work in a chair/on a couch so an iPad with a detached keyboard would not work out.

The refurbished M-1 MB Airs with 512 GB SSDs on the Apple site ?are about $1,200 while those on the Amazon Renewed site are $828 (and come with a 90-day warrantee).

Have any of you readers ever purchased a used/renewed Apple Computer from a third party site like Amazon and, if so, would you recommend that site?

Many thanks for any tips.

I generally prefer Apple Refurbished, where I see the price is closer to $1,000+tax. I think the M2 model is about $1,200.

However, for a third-party, I would go to Backmarket for its 1-year warranty. Best deal I see there is?.

Thank you very much, Ben!

Just bookmarked that one. ?The one-year warranty is nice; better than Amazon and OWC , the latter of which only offers a 30-day, ?money-back offer.

I have purchased 13" MacBook Pros from OWC (aka macsales.com). They were both mid 2012 non retina. It was a while ago. These are models that allow swapping ram and hard drives. I put 2TB SSD and 16 GB ram in them both, purchased from OWC at various times, when the prices improved. The 2012s are both still running. One in daily use as a main machine, the other as a backup server.

Often OWC can provide the Mac model with the ram and storage you might be looking for.

If you want a Mac that was made within the last year or so, you can’t beat Apple Refurbished because they come like-new and include a warranty.

If you want something older, I’ve had incredible luck with GroupOn. They have both grade-“A” refurbs and they also have scratch and dent items that are otherwise perfect at a nice discount. They have awesome sales on holidays.

Here is a list of the places that I know about:

Thank you for that one Steve and for the details on your experience with them. ?Another one to bookmark.

Thanks, Jeff. ?Their one-year warranty is particularly reassuring.

Randy - your knowledge is little short of encyclopedic!! ?

I’ll add all those sites to my Refurbished bookmark folder.

Amazon is a purveyor for other retailer. They don’t provide warranties, and you do not know how good any repair work is. Good with a tech retailer like Best Buy, OWC (get on their email list, they always have sales), Small Dogs, or others.

Thanks for the pointer to Backmarket. Always good to know about alternatives and places that will deliver to addresses outside the USA without horrendous shipping costs and customs import duties.

I found this: , but unfortunately there does not seem to be an e-mail address or phone number and it means creating an account on the website. I don't have a delivery address in Germany, but I do have one in an EU country and that was never a problem with Amazon Germany.

Maybe I will create a temporary account and look for "live chat" and some telephone numbers.

I think that depends on the item. I quite often see an option to purchase a warranty when I buy things from Amazon Germany. I don't know about other Amazon websites, but I know a telephone number for Amazon Germany (a normal one, not one that causes additional per minute charges on top of the actual cost of the phone call).
