I bought this external enclosure yesterday for $55 that is 40Gbps to put an NVME in to - it’s my Parallels drive that currently lives on a PCIE card in my Mac Pro.

I also bought an OWC one to put another NVME drive in to be my Home folder on an external - again 40Gbps - but eventually once Thunderbolt 5 enclosures become available will consider switching when they’re no longer bleeding edge future products.

When it comes to external drives, most users make do with 10Mbps enclosures/drives. They are plenty fast, and are now reasonably priced.

Of course, all the tariffs will likely effect prices negatively.
Yeah - tariffs - that’s why gave Apple almost $3,000 a week ago to get in before the tariffs hit, and trying to get ahead on the needed peripherals too, even though the computer is delayed - when I’d looked at Apple the day before I ordered, on Thursday 30 January, I could have the computer the following Tuesday - 4 Feb. When I ordered on 31 January it’s now out to 12-19 February - I guess I’m not the only person trying to beat the tariffs.

Yes I’ve looked over their website a number of times. One downside is that to get decent speed out of it at Thunderbolt 5 suddenly the $99 price is $299. The $99 one is 10Gbps speed. The 40Gbps one only provides 3 extra ports, and the 80Gbps one seems to not have any extra ports - it’s just an enclosure for an SSD.

My use for something like this is to off-load my home directory to outside the Mac mini M4 Pro, and I want to take as much advantage of the Thunderbolt 5 as I can without paying currently crazy pricing for Thunderbolt 5 external drives - currently around $600 for 4TB. So I’ll be using one of the Mac’s Thunderbolt 5 ports for that, but have other things that need some speed too.

It’s a great idea but needs refinement for the greatness to be implemented in a meaningful way for someone with a bunch of older peripherals.

I watched this video - not exactly a ringing endorsement, and I’d looked at the reviews on Amazon, as well as on the RayCue site - problems mentioned somewhere included overheating and increased fan use because the Mac is sitting on top of an SSD that can get at least warm.

Satechi finally released their promised one yesterday - at $99 it’s also very underwhelming in features and performance for my use case.

Soundflower replacement

 

Years ago I used Soundflower to route sound playing from any source (such as a Web browser) to Audacity or really any other program. Soundflower is now defunct.

Thunderbolt Docks

 

A while ago I asked about storage needs on a new Mac mini M4 Pro.

Well the impending tariffs made me pull the trigger and get it the day before tariffs were announced.

I went for the Mac mini M4 Pro with 64GB RAM and 1TB Storage. Happy Birthday to me as I turned 70 the day after I placed the order.

I’m working on enclosures to get some of the drives out of my 2012 Mac Pro - the 4TB NVME that’s on a PCIE card, a 480GB NVME that’s on a PCIE card, and an 8TB TimeMachine drive in one of the SATA slots inside the machine.

Now trying to figure out connections for

? 2 Displays - the Mac comes with a single HDMI port on it
? 2 OWC RAID drives that can connect by FireWire or USB 3
? New Apple keyboard and trackpad - both are cordless, but come with USB-C charging cables that will need access
? Ancient USB Scanner

and so a Dock seems like the ideal solution here.

Anyone have experience with any particular brand good or bad?

I’ve been eyeing the OWC variety - they have 11 port Thunderbolt 4



and the 14 port Thunderbolt 3




I think either of them would deal with what I need them to as apart from the two RAID TimeMachine backup drives, and the 8TB TimeMachine backup drive the rest don’t need much power or throughput. But the ThunderBolt 4 one would be a bit more future proof. The current ThunderBolt 5 dock from them only does Thunderbolt, not other connections.

There are a bewildering array of of choices, mostly from companies I’v’e never heard of - are there other to look at apart from the OWC line that people have experience with?

I'm finding as time goes on and I get my feet wet in AI that for questions such as this, i.e., the meaning of log nomenclature, that an AI search can be much more productive and time saving than running a search in your browser. This just one question. There are lots of other terms you can run an AI search on in your log. Maybe they will reveal a clue that makes sense with whatever is going on with your system.?

The Mac OS does routine maintenance during down periods, including updating anti-virus definitions.

It could be that your Mac is exchanging data with iCloud, or executing a backup program.

Or software could be updating.

You can use the Console app to read your Mac’s log files to see what it has been doing:

Often when I come back to it, even after being away for hours, the lights are flashing like crazy and I hear what I assume are reads ?(and writes?) going on.

Why could this be? Shouldn’t everyone be asleep and home in their bed?

The files don’t all need to be in the same place - but spread between internal and external drive.

The external could be a ThunderBolt connected device - eg OWC have a ThunderBolt 5 drive just out, or one of the docks that are already out, or coming that sit under the Mac mini M4 Pro.
