Yolanda,
Why not just subscibe to the single msg version of the list and set
up filters in your email app to send them all to their own folders? It makes
reading and sorting the messages much easier...

Hiya... Is it possible to get a MIME type digest instead of the digest I'm
getting? The digest I receive comes willy nilly, sometimes once, sometimes
more times every day. It is always difficult to follow. I prefer, by far,
the MIME digest we used to have access to.

Where does one go to change from one format to another? Or are there no
choices with Yahoo e-groups?

Very nifty Rik, thank you. I am having a few odd problems with iCab (the 68k version) but it's a terrific program. Thanks again, and prepare yourself for a few questions here and there.. :-)

Alien jpg's, .doc's, etc

BrianS

Hello All,

For the last week or so, the strangest thing has been happening:

I have downloaded a couple of picture files (jpeg) and after the download completes, i'm left with an Application. You know, the little diamond-shaped app icon. When I click on it, I get a dialog which states "The application xyz.jpg could not be launched, Error -39" or something similar.

I thought it was an iCab problem at first. I'm on an LC475 (OS7.6.1). This is following years of trouble-free downloads. Now, I was online with a cousin last night on AOL Instant messenger (yuck) and the same thing happened, and, when i wrote back the old "sorry, it didn't come through", she re-sent as a Windows bmp (yuck, again) and the same result, THEN, she sent a MS doc file of the pic, and after watching a 1.3MB file being transferred, all that was in my designated download folder was a 32k application, the same old (new) thing.

As if that weren't odd enough. Earlier in the week I kept one of these little 32k so-called applications (alien pic files? I don't know) on my hard drive, and the next tme clicked on a Graphic Converter document (jpg), instead of Graphic Con launching, I got the same bloody Error39 message...upon trashing the oddball app, GCon launched as usual....

I am at, or near, my wits end...any ideas, even the most absurd, will be gratefully entertained..

All the Best,
BrianS

Re: Digest Number 9

Daniel Gagner

No, I'd turn it upside down and the computer would spin up and boot then I'd
turn it right side up again. That was a long time ago. Sometimes just
getting it sideways would do the trick. It's not the drive head it was the
grease they use in the center of the drive platter that would stick. The
drive wouldn't start spinning after the grease would get old and
sticky...hence "stiction".

You can move a computer while the drive is on but a sharp bump will cause
the heads to scrape the surface of the platter. That's why we shut down
properly and park the heads before we move a machine.

Unsticking that hard drive in the SE sounds strange but he's exactly right.
I had an SE in the late 80's early 90's. I'd have to turn my SE upside down
sometimes during startup to get it to work. A lot of early 40-80 mb Quantum
drives had this problem.
When you do this, do you leave it upside down or turn it back over? I
have a 2 gig drive that got hot and I think the heads stuck to the
platter. I haven't messed with it much - need to get something to
transfer to before I start it up! I thought you couldn't move the
drives while they are on - or am I mistaken?

To whoever was looking for a way to make a slide show with sound (I lost track
through all the replies), why not use iMovie? You can import jpeg images and
set how long they appear on the screen and add music. Then export it to
quicktime, and all you have to do is play the movie and the images will display
for as long as you set them to and then move on.

Hope this helps.

FWIW, I use Eudora 4.2.2, and like it very much (but have nothing

e-mail client, including Claris E-mailer version 1.0. Please no posts

Take care,
Me too :-) Meaning: I won't get drawn into this one, but my feeling is that it boils down to security problems (unless all the enriched text/html is disabled, in Outlook X) versus inevitable forced reboots (if Eudora Pro is left on in the background)... However, if one uses the freebie, Eudora Lite 3.1.3, it will check your mail and rifle everything into nice neat folders, all day and night without so much as a peep. Small footprint, no security problems. There are always advantages and disadvantages to any choice.

All the best,

At around 5:57 AM +0000, on 12.20.2000, Steph took a sidelong glance, drew a deep breath, and had this to say:

In my older version of Eudora Pro (3.1.3), you hold down the Option+Command
key while clicking on the URL, and you will get a dialog box asking you to
pick the application to do http. Then just navigate to iCab on your hard
drive and select it. After that it will automatically use that application
until you change it. Hope this works for you.

Steph
Yup yup, Thank you Steph, it had been a long time since I had to select a browser, on Pro4.2.2 its Option-double click... Thanks again :-)

iCab Situation / Puzzling

BrianS

Hello All,

Is there an iCab user out there who can help me sort something out? I use iCab (the 68k version) on my LC475. Great browser, BUT, I don't see anything resembling "Open This Link in New Window". Some websites are so poorly-designed, that a separate window is a 'must'. I tried Option-click on the links in question, but that downloads the file associated with the link, all well and good, however the download is an ASP application, apparently, and trying to open it brings the old -192 Error (PPC on a 68k, no-no). I abhor the thought of going back to Navigator, any suggestions? TIA

All the Best,
BrianS

Randy,

I've been using "Slides and Sound Plus" for self-contained slide shows.
But it has some serious limitations and will not be updated. (Among
others, it seems to not work under OS 9.04.) I need a better program than
this one.
I'm not sure how technical you want to get or what kind of slideshow you
have in mind, but QuickTime lets you make slide shows out of just a series
of image files with appropriate names. You can advance each slide just by
clicking on an arrow key, or make them auto-advancing.

This site has AppleScripts that automate that process:
<>

Here's the page at apple that tells you about the slideshow creation process
itself:

<>

There are a number of other qt apps that give you more flexibility, though I
can't think of one off-hand that is targeted at slideshows alone. MovieWorks
comes to mind as one possibility though: <>.

There's also a tutorial for adding sound, and mp3's will work there too, of
course. Adding a soundtrack that loops would require a sprite, but again I
know there are solutions out there.

An advantage of QT is that it's cross-platform and free to users. A movie is
not quite self-contained, but who doesn't have QT these days? ;-)

Eudora mail sorting

Fay Kelley

For one thing, whenever I opened a mailbox, it invariably decided that I wanted
to view the most recent message. Unfortunately, I prefer to read my mail
from oldest to newest, especially my list mail, so that I can read the
questions before I read the answers.

I'm using Eudora Pro 4.2. I can order my mail boxes
by tapping the column heading to sort by that category;
and to have it in reverse order, hold down
the OPTION KEY while you tap the column heading
and it will reverse the order within that category.

Also, there are numerous settings determining
when mail is opened automatically or manually.

My personal experience was that I could manipulate my mail
and folders more robustly with Eudora, but it really is a
subjective decision best reached through experimentation.

My advice would be to try both the latest (free) version of Eudora,

may find that you really like one of these programs, or that you are
happy just the way things are.
Very good suggestion. It isn't a good idea to try something for less than
half an hour and judge it as unfit. You never know when something can grow

Re: O.E. vs Eudora

maybe O.E. has so many features that it's worth putting up with all its

I love OE, though now I use Entourage, which is the same as OE and then
some. I tried quite a few different mail clients before deciding on OE. The
others, though they had some features I liked, mostly annoyed me with their
interfaces. Frankly, I haven't really noticed many significant
"idiosyncrancies" with OE.

When I was using Windows, though, I used Eudora Pro (free version, with
ads). The Windows version of OE was a joke, compared to the Mac version. For
one thing, whenever I opened a mailbox, it invariably decided that I wanted

Re: Internet Config Question

John S. Baltutis

From the Eudora Help -> Selecting a URL Helper

Selecting a URL Helper Application

Any string of text that Eudora recognizes as a "hot link," also known as a URL (Uniform Resource Locator), is active. Active URLs in incoming Eudora messages are normally highlighted in blue text and blue underlining, and are often enclosed by left and right angle brackets, "< >". You normally double-click on a URL in an incoming message (or Command-click on it) to open the URL. This launches an Internet application that, for example, opens a World Wide Web location, transfers a file, performs a gopher search, performs a Ph, Finger, or LDAP query, etc. Typical URL prefixes include http, ftp, gopher, ph, finger, ldap, and more.

To specify what Internet application to use when opening a particular type of URL, take these steps:

1. Open the incoming message containing the URL, or preview the message in the message preview pane, making sure the URL is visible in the pane.

2. Hold down the Option key and double-click on the URL in the message window or preview pane. A standard file dialog is displayed.

3. In the dialog, select the application you want to use for that type of URL.

4. Click Open. The selected application is opened and goes to that URL.

From then on, when you select a URL of that type in a Eudora message, your selected application is automatically used: it opens and acts on the URL.

A sample URL is <>, which a web browser would use to take you to QUALCOMM's main Eudora web page on the World Wide Web. If you hold down the Option key and double-click on such an http URL in a Eudora message, you can then choose the default browser (or other application) that you want Eudora to launch whenever you select that type of URL in an incoming message. (You select the URL, once again, by double-clicking or Command-clicking on it.)

Subject: Internet Config Question

Okay, so it's also a Eudora Pro question...

I'm using iCab as my browser of choice. It is selected in Unternet Config. BBEdit goes to iCab automatically. However when I click on a link in an email (in Eudora), it opens and runs Navigator... :-(

I looked through every setting in Eudora, and there are no areas dealing with "helper apps". AND, I've checked the setting which gives "full compliance with OT/PPP"...so, now what? Where else would there be a setting or Preference? Inside Navigator, itself? Thanks for your considerations.
