Re: iPhone yes, MacBook Pro, no

Both devices are on latest systems. I already deleted and re-added the accounts when we converted from POP to GoDaddy's IMAP and Microsoft Exchange.

Oddly, this is "hit and miss." Works most of the time. Just missed a beat now and then.

Hello Rob

Exchange and IMAP are two very different things.?

I wonder if t is a settings problem om your Mac??

Has it ever worked??

I would delete the account on the MacBook (nothing will be lost!!!!), restart it and then add the account again. When you add the account, make sure you select Exchange (not IMAP) since GoDaddy according to you uses Exchange.

Then test it for a few days and report back.

Another thing: let’s say you receive 10 emails on your iPhone … is it all 10 that don't show on the MacBook or just some of them? Is there a pattern? Specific senders??

:-)

Does this happen consistently across all accounts? That is, do you find that all new email sometimes doesn’t appear on Mac when it does on iPhone? Or is it account-specific?

When was the last time you tried deleting one or more accounts on Mac and re-adding them? Also, what versions of macOS and iOS are you on?

I frequently hear from users in just your situation. They have just updated their OS, and Mail has stopped working correctly.

Generally deleting all of your e-mail accounts in Mail, and then entering and setting them up again, fixes things.

Re: Can't send mail in 15.4.1 on Intel MBP

Run DU on the Air and see if it has the orphans mappings. They may have nothing to do with the problem.

Boot the MBP from the 15.4 clone and see if you can send email. And run DU to see if there are orphan mappings.

Just a couple of thoughts,

After clicking “Send” the icon is greyed out, but nothing happens.

I can open the Drafts folder on our M2 MacBook Air running 15.4 and send any mail there; in fact, I wrote this on our MBP and sent it on the MBA.

Connection Doctor shows Mail is connecting to all servers.

We run SpamSieve so I booted to Safe Boot but no change.

Booted to Recovery Mode and ran First Aid in Disk Utility and received these warnings:

warning: orphan omap mapping found for old 16637723
warning: volumeomap (fs_oid 0xf724e9): 2 orpan mappings found

… was found to be corrupt and needs to be repired

Performing deferred repairs

Operation successful.

These warnings appear no matter how many times First Aid is run.

Don’t know if we had these warnings in 15.4, but suspect that we did. Anyway, Apple seems to ignore them, as you can see.

Re-installed the OS from Recovery Mode, but no change.

Have a bootable clone made just before installing 15.4.1, but it would contain the orphan mappings.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I also had no idea that there was SO MUCH really good free software for the Macintosh! I've just drastically updated the page, and it's now up to 237 listings of really nice free software for the Mac!

FREE MACINTOSH SOFTWARE

Among the latest additions are very advanced graphics programs, programs that use AI to do things that were very hard/expensive to do previously (such as speech recognition/transcription), genealogy programs, and a number of nice utility programs.

If you haven't gone through all of the listings recently, it's worth looking through them again. There are sure to be free apps that you will find that will prove to be invaluable.

The page is entirely non-commercial, I don't make a cent from it.
I want to point out that I'm not an expert Web developer...far from it. I'm just an enthusiast. So the site looks a bit amateurish. But hopefully it is still very useful and interesting.

I also acknowledge that the site doesn't yet support HTTPS. I'm getting to it. (If this turns you off, please just ignore the page, rather than harassing me about it.)

Please spread the word about the Web site to others!

By request, here are the most recent additions to the page:

The Macintosh came out in January of 1984. ?I got mine with a printer in February of 1984. ?I’ve still got it with the original box and the carrying case you could get. ?Since then I’ve had a?succession of Macs. ? Right now I’ve got a MacBook Pro, a Tower that they let me take home when I retired and I hate to admit 3 Mac minis. ?My wife also has a MacBook Pro and we each have an iPad. ?When I was working I attached our?office Macs to an IBM AS/400 mainframe.

I’ve been the local Mac guru and have changed hard drives, batteries etc. on a lot of Macs over the years.

With a friend I wrote a comprehensive data base using Omnis that handled all the ordering and shipping where I worked.

I’ve got lots of valuable advice and help from this forum and Randy in particular. ?I also have to shout out Pat Taylor for the particular help she’s given me.

Back in the old days we had a tag line that we used. ?“If you have to read the manual it’s not Mac enough” ?:-)

I haven’t heard a Macintosh user ask this question for about a decade!

Well over a decade ago, Word had a feature called “Fast Saves” that when enabled, saving a file was much faster. But…it made your document less secure. Fast saves were accomplished by appending recent additions to the end of the document you were working on (at a lower level than what you saw on the screen), instead of updating and saving the entire document.

If you sent someone a document created with Fast Saves enabled, they could throw the document into a text editor and see all of the deleted text from multiple edits.

Word hasn’t had a Fast Save feature for a very long time. It is no longer necessary, because computers are way faster now.

But if you are concerned, you can throw your Word document in a text editor yourself and see what might be left over. Something like the free version of BBEdit should work. Usually any extraneous metadata will appear at the very beginning or at the very end of the file.

There is other “metadata”’ in a Word document. But metadata is not really a big problem with Word/Mac like it is with Word/Win.

Here is what you can do to make sure that there is no extraneous metadata in a documen that you will be sharing with others.

When you are done with a document in Word, and want to cleanse it before sending it off to someone, look under:

File menu --> Properties —> Summary
and delete any information that you see there that is sensitive. (if you do this in your Normal template and save it, from then on nothing will appear there.)

Now, do a "Save As" of the file and save it with a different name. Doing this will purge any extraneous data in the file.

I hope this helps.

Reading "Deleted" Lines In Word

All -
?
I have two versions of a Word file, started from one version and duplicated it. I started the file a couple of years ago and did have "Changes" turned on and exchanged versions with a colleague. Now I have edited both versions and Changes are turned off.?
?
Now I want to send a version to two different colleagues but have them NOT able to see changes that I made to earlier versions. There is nothin nefarious going on, I just want them to concentrate on their parts of a project! When I do "Get Info" you can see that the file was started a couple of years ago - that is no problem. Is there a way that people can retrieve deleted lines from Word files??
?
I looked at some sites and people there asked the question and the answers just seemed to talk about if you had hidden backups (maybe on Onedrive) but I am only sending a copy of the most recent versions.?
?
Thank you.?
