Thanks. I turned off continuity/airplay and still got the message. But I haven't turned the computer off yet; maybe that'll help. As long as it's not ransomware or anything.

I had to remove four screws from the sides of the drive that I installed in the hub so that it would fit.
That was the extent of the effort required to get it up and running.
