Since you still have the old original image library … you could delete the library on the new computer, move the library from the old computer. Double-click it and see what happens … is it a iPhoto library it should convert to a Photos library.?

You can also simply select all and move them to a folder outside of the iPhoto/Photos app … but then you won’t get the sorted folder structure. Disk Drill may/may not be able to do that. Worth a try.?

Hello Bob

Sometimes something is so simple and userfriendy it doesn’t work. Been there.?

And then you try again. And again. And suddenly you have 7 image libraries that are not identical, and you wonder which is correct. I know by experience.?

I notice you write, that she have empty albums … I must ask … are these albums she has made herself? Like Holiday 2007 or Christmas 2021??
If she has sorted her pictures in that kind of folders, you may have a bigger problem, as they can be difficult to recreate/recover.?

Random thoughts?

You have the old computer, yes? When you open Photos, everything is fine??
Copy that library to an external drive in folder named "for safekeeping”
Copy it again to another folder on the drive .. this second copy will be the one to work with. You can rename it to someting easy to remember. E.g. images-step-1

Copy images-step-1 to the new computer.
Double-click it … does it look right??

If so … close Photos and move the library to the User/Images folder (perhaps it’s called Pictures ? My system language is not English)?

Doubleclick it again and make it the default system library.

Now, this is the shit, and now you have to check all the other libraries for photos that is not in the default system library.?

How many other libraries do you have? 4? 5? 6??

Move them all to the external drive in folders named 1, 2, 3, 4 etc

Delete them from her internal drive.?

Make a folder on the desktop on her new computer - call it Photos-temp or something like that
Inside that folder, create subfolders named 1, 2, 3, 4 etc

On the external drive, go to folder 1 … ctrl-click on the library file and select "show contents of package”.
Here you have Masters .. .which are all the original photos
Copy Masters to Internal harddrive - Desktop - Photos-temp - folder 1

Do the same with the other libraries on the external drive.?

Now you can start Photos.app and from there you an choose Import … and import the masterfolders you just copied. One at a time.?

Photos.app “should” tell you, if any (probably most) of the pictures are already imported.?

A lot of work, but pictures are memories … grandparents and children and important moments. Worth spending some time on.?

:-)

Another thing you could try - which has helped me a lot: Buy DiskDrill … the more I use that app the more I realise how fantastic it is in recovering files - including files that are not really “missing” or deleted. And often it can even recreate the folders …(I have no shares in that company, I bought the app in desperation a while back, when DataRescue and FileSalvage failed to help me … )?

My posts to several Apple forum led to a discussion of keyboards for folks with Parkinson’s and I have cut and pasted those Q&A below for your edification.

1.?
?I have parkensens and would also like to know what’s available

2.
?Is the problem that:
(1) the keys are too close together, so that you often hit the wrong character?
(2) the keys are too sensitive so that the keyboard registers too many characters?
(3) the keys require too much force to activate, so that you miss characters?

3. ?
Adjusting key sensitivity in System Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Slow Keys might help with #2.

Apple Help says:
“Adjust the delay between when you press a key and when it’s activated.
“To customize, click the Info button (i):
“? Use click key sounds: Have keys make a sound when pressed. One sound plays when you press a key, and a different sound plays when the key press is accepted.
“? Acceptance Delay: Set the delay between when you press a key and when it’s accepted.”

4. ?
If that doesn’t suffice, certain models of Kinesis keyboards use Cherry MX keyswitches. ?The most affordable are the $180 Freestyle Pro. ?I used a Kinesis keyboard 20 years ago.

The Freestyle Pro offers a choice between Cherry Brown "tactile feel" or Red "quiet, linear". ?According to the specs I downloaded from Cherry 20 years ago, both types have the same travel. ?The only difference is whether they make an audible, tactile click.

5.
In my prior post, I omitted the most important part — Cherry MX keyswitches have a longer travel than the membrane keyboards almost universally used today. ?The "brown, tactile click" model has a pressure release (drop) when you depress it to the click point. ?Cherry is a German company.

I just found the details online:

Brown tactile click: ?

Red linear, silent: ?

I discovered they have a newer range of MX keyswitches that includes an Ergo Clear that has a tactile pressure drop like Brown but without the clicking sound:

Cherry also makes complete keyboards, but the Mac models all have membrane keys, not MX keyswitches.

I’m not Bob, but the best suggestion that Bob got was on another list. ?It is a suggestion specifically for those with Parkinson’s and similar conditions. ?It is a special “keyguard” that puts all of your keyboard’s keys individually in a slightly depressed well so that it becomes extremely unlikely that you will hit a nearby key when you go to hit a specific key. ?Basically, there is a bit of a wall around each key directing you to it.

Re: God-Awful Photo Library mess

Maybe different file formats, for example HEIC or JPG for actual photos or even MOV and MP4 for videos.

Try running something like BeyondCompare (www.scootersoftware.com) on the two directories that apparently have the same number of files but different sizes on disk.

This is a result of the file system change from HFS+ to APFS that was performed when you updated the OS to Monterrey. APFS creates those three “partitions”. It is not a problem, and you should leave them alone.

I looked up IPS panel, but what is VA?
Nearly all monitors sold today use an LCD panel based on one of three technologies: twisted nematic (TN), in-plane switching (IPS), and vertical alignment (VA).

The least expensive monitors often use a TN panel. TN panel monitors look dull next to IPS and have bad resolution at acute viewing angles. I’d avoid getting a monitor with a TN panel.

A majority of monitors use IPS. Monitors based on IPS have very accurate color and can support a wide color gamut at a reasonable price. IPS struggles with dark scenes, however, because it can’t achieve a convincing shade of black. This is the dreaded “IPS glow” you may have heard of, which can look unappealing when watching movies or playing games. However, gamers still often like IPS monitors because some IPS panels have low response times and very high refresh rates.

VA panels have the best contrast ratio and dark scene performance of the three, which makes VA a great choice for watching videos and gaming. This is especially true of high-quality (e.g. expensive) modern VA panels, which have mostly solved the color accuracy and motion smearing issues of some past, and/or inexpensive VA monitors.

There is no clear choice between IPS and VA (at least with regard to quality monitors), as both have their perks. When it comes to work, though, you may find the choice is made for you. A huge majority of productivity monitors use an IPS panel. And for most purposes their pictures are great. You’ll want to lean your search toward gaming monitors if you prefer the high contrast a quality VA panel can provide.

So, IPS is best for clarity, VA is good for gaming and movies, TN panels are now rare or only seen in cheap monitors.

There is no such thing as a “Macintosh monitor.” There hasn’t been for decades. (There are monitors that Apple sells for use specifically with Macs, but there is nothing special about them. They are just over-priced high-end monitors made for Apple by the likes of Samsung, with Apple’s logo put on them.) Just about any monitor can be used with a Macintosh.

As long as the monitor you purchase has a matching input to the video output on your Macintosh, you are golden. Fortunately, HDMI is a digital standard that is quickly becoming universal. Some Macs don’t have an HDMI output (notably some MacBooks that only have Thunderbolt ports), so you need an inexpensive Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter to pair your Mac with a modern monitor.

Don’t get too caught up in specs and random technologies that are included with a monitor. Read the reviews and see if the picture looks good and if it works well.

It’s surprisingly hard to go wrong with your monitor choice. Most end users who aren’t video professionals can’t even tell the difference between a cheap monitor and a very expensive one.

How do they compare with the iMac monitor? ?I understand 4K but all these monitors come with long lists of confusing specs. G-Sync, FreeSync, ISP, AMD, sRGB or Adobe RGB? Do any of these matter??

Do these monitors remain on when the Mac sleeps? Do they come on when I wake up the Mac? I don’t really one with speakers.?

Sorry for all the questions.

By posting on three different forums hoping to find a member with Parkinson’s who had direct experience with keyboard problems, I got quite a number of very useful suggestions, all of which I sent to the lady in question and she was overwhelmed ?by all the help that people were kind enough to offer

My thanks for all the suggestions.

Well needless to say they had a LG 32" on sale in the store and decided go with it. I am not a gamer or graphics guru, but was blown away with the resolution of the monitor that was $200.
That is a good price for a big monitor, but I do want to point out that it is not a 4K monitor, nor does it have an IPS panel (it is VA). However, I’m sure that it looks really good. Many users who aren’t into graphics or video production can’t even tell the difference between a 1080p monitor and a 4K monitor.
