Re: iPhone plays dead
An update is somewhat similar to rebooting a computer, i.e. it fixes something that you couldn't find a cause for.

But OTOH operating system and application updates could well fix a specific problem, but cause others. App updates for mobile phones and tablets are notorious that the update removes functionality that was previously there. Admittedly not every app,but enough that I disable autoupdate and read what the update does. Re: Where did all the Mail Rules files go in Ventura?
开云体育Have you tried EasyFind??It can find anything on your drive, just give it the text. You can set it to search contents only, invisible files and folders, titles, wildcards, etc.? I don’t use rules in Mail so can’t test it. Jerry

Re: Ventura breaks some aliases
开云体育Moving the Finder preferences file (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist) makes sense to me as a possible fix. After doing so, restart the Mac and see how the aliases work. If you’ve customized Finder settings in any way, make note of your changes so you can set them again.

Where did all the Mail Rules files go in Ventura?
John Hay
I need to track down the rule in Apple Mail that's moving some emails around and having gone through manually the rules front-end dialog I can't find what's triggering this behavior. Unfortunately Apple does not provide any way to search rules, in any way. I have dozens and dozens, with dozens of child rules.? ? The mail rules used to be located at either: /Library/Mail/(latest version number)/MailData? or ...twin files called SyncedRules.plist and UnsyncedRules.plist ? But they are not there (or hidden) in Ventura 13.5.1 to my knowledge. I guess things have changed quite a bit. If I can open the rules file I can just do a quick search for key words and then edit the rules? <dict> code, or at least find the title of the rule and go back to the front-end and try again from there.? ? Anyone know where the rules files went?? ? All the best, John |
Re: iPhone plays dead
开云体育Guess I wasn’t clear either.I have never experienced that. The few times I have used the speaker and put the phone up to my ear, It has not switched over. Speaker stays on. There are some settings in *Accessibility* that allow one to set which speaker is used. “Automatic” lets the? phone switch to Bluetooth if your using headphones, if not it will use the small speaker (Ear Hole) on the phone. “Bluetooth” setting will have it only use your headphones. And the “Speaker” setting will only use the speakerphone? feature. wikiHow says: "Changing this to "Automatic" will disable your speakerphone for calls by default, though you can? enable the speakerphone manually.” Bob

I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear: isn’t that how it’s supposed to work, i.e., the phone switches between “earpiece” and speaker according to how you hold it?

开云体育I can’t say that I have experienced that. I hardly ever use the speaker function, but there has been atime or two when I needed to free up my hands. When I rested the phone on my shoulder the speaker? stayed on. Bob

Ventura breaks some aliases
Yesterday on Ventura 13.5 — nine (9) aliases of 24 on my desktop ceased to function. Items can be dropped into them and appear where expected. However, clicking on the alias brings up the top level finder window.
The following did not change the behavior of the 9 aliases. Relaunching the finder Rebooting the computer Using get info and checking path Deleting alias and recreating alias — Why ? Updating to Ventura 13.5.1 And repeating the above steps ! However, putting the aliases into a brand new desktop folder (conveniently labeled “Aliases That Dont Work in Desktop”) NOW allow the aliases to open to the expected place. A workaround only. Researching (Google) found a 2022 question to a similar problem which referenced pList. I stopped there as I don’t speak pList. HELP ! — Any suggestions ? Robert Teeter (83 yrs young) (In Florida) |
Re: iPhone plays dead
开云体育A little more about the proximity sensor.?It disables the touchscreen functions so one does not accidentally disconnect a call or your face (accidentally?) order that pizza you’ve been thinking about all day. Some articles advise removing the case, cleaning/removing/replacing any screen? protectors. And of course “update” to latest OS and hard reset. My phone has had this problem a couple of times and both the hard reset and case? removal have gotten it back working correctly again. Bob

Software updates can also break things that previously worked. If that happens, you have to wait for the next software update that fixes the problem. as there is still no way of reinstalling a previous version without a jailbreak. Even with a jailbreak, you don't have much time to do it.

Re: One Drive?
Do you by chance have MS Office for Mac on your computer? If yes, look at all the settings and disable anything that sends to the cloud.

There is a definite bug in Word for Windows and maybe Word for Mac that you cannot enable autosave unless you allow sending things to the cloud. I haven't looked into how to disable OneDrive on a Mac (but maybe I don't have that problem on my own Mac), but it is a real pain to disable on a Windows computer. I actually have a licence and the installer (despite the pain of Microsoft accounts to actually download it) MS Office for Mac, but I haven't got round to installing it on my wife's Mac. I don't need it on my own Mac as I also have a Windows computer. Re: iPhone plays dead
开云体育If the case is that you let it go to sleep and can’t wake it up, then set it to never sleep. After a period of use, turn it off when you’re not using it and see if you can wake it up then.? The bad cell idea comes from having a battery pack go from 50% to 0% in seconds. (Not an iPhone battery, but same idea.) The cell was “alive” enough to fool the measuring device but not enough to work before dying. Hope that’s clear! ? Jerry On Aug 22, 2023, at 7:16 PM, Steve Bee <buytcfhe@...> wrote:
