I can’t say that I have experienced that. I hardly ever use the speaker function, but there has been a
time or two when I needed to free up my hands. When I rested the phone on my shoulder the speaker?
stayed on.

Software updates can also break things that previously worked. If that happens, you have to wait for the next software update that fixes the problem. as there is still no way of reinstalling a previous version without a jailbreak. Even with a jailbreak, you don't have much time to do it.

Re: One Drive?

Do you by chance have MS Office for Mac on your computer? If yes, look at all the settings and disable anything that sends to the cloud.
There is a definite bug in Word for Windows and maybe Word for Mac that you cannot enable autosave unless you allow sending things to the cloud.

I haven't looked into how to disable OneDrive on a Mac (but maybe I don't have that problem on my own Mac), but it is a real pain to disable on a Windows computer.

I actually have a licence and the installer (despite the pain of Microsoft accounts to actually download it) MS Office for Mac, but I haven't got round to installing it on my wife's Mac. I don't need it on my own Mac as I also have a Windows computer.

If the case is that you let it go to sleep and can’t wake it up, then set it to never sleep. After a period of use, turn it off when you’re not using it and see if you can wake it up then.?

The bad cell idea comes from having a battery pack go from 50% to 0% in seconds. (Not an iPhone battery, but same idea.) The cell was “alive” enough to fool the measuring device but not enough to work before dying. Hope that’s clear! ?

What is the battery charge level when this happens? The same level every time (say, at 94%)? Or does it vary? Does this happen when the phone is plugged in and charging (or fully charged)? Is the phone hot/warm when this happens? After a long period of use?

Thanks Jerry,
I am sorry that I wasn't clear. The screen is black, as it should be when it is "sleeping" but nothing that I can do will wake it. It doesn't happen when I am actively "using" it, only when the screen is black when not being actively used. I have to do what is explained at;
I say when I am actively used because there is bluetooth which is always active even when I am not doing anything with it and the screen is dark.

As far as the battery charge level, it has been in the 70's and 80's percent when I checked the last couple of times it happened.

I do not think that it is particularly hot as it happens when it is being? handled and carried in the same manner as it has always been. And it does not feel hot.

Why do you think it is a bad battery cell?

My first guess is an old battery that has a bad cell. Another option is a worn-out component.

I, too, have an SE 2020, battery health is 85%, though I have iOS 16.6. My wife has the same setup. Neither have had this problem.

I have changed NOTHING in many months. No new apps. No updating of apps. No updating nor upgrading of the OS. Nothing that I can think off has changed.
The "Battery Health" in "Settings" reports "Maximum Capacity" = 87% and I have always had "Optimised Battery Charging" turned on.

So. Does the Group wisdom have ideas of what is going on.

BTW, yes, I have backed up the iPhone.

On my machine there is no "Touch" settings. There is "Touch ID & Passcode".? Within that there is no "Tap (screen) to Wake"

"Also any button should wake it"? Brent, that is exactly the problem, it has repeatedly played dead. Nothing will wake it.

And it happened again since I first posted my problem a few hours ago.

The device has been reliable for ~2.5 yrs. and for 10 months with the same version of the iOS. Since I have not changed anything, I would like to try to find out what is causing the problem. Just going to iOS 16 without knowing what is wrong is a shot in the dark.
