[IC-7000] Send CW via FLDIGI or other...

Is there a way to send CW on the 7000 via software like FLDIGI, WinWarbler,The Signalink sends data through sideband phone, so you would not be sending CW, but MCW, which is illegal below 50 MHz. -- -73, Dan K3DRQ FISTS #13110, SKCC #4493T, EPC #20322 |

A pure tone in a SSB transmitter can also be considered an IF at audio frequencies followed by an image reject mixer. Who said the IF of a transmitter had to be above audio frequencies? If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck. As I said in a previous message, the main advantage of using CW mode over SSB is on the receive side, where you have access to the narrower CW filters. And quite frankly, the rest of the world doesn't care - mode based regulation went out here years ago, now there's a simple bandwidth limit for each band. Many other countries have adopted similar regulations, from what I can gather. -- 73 de Tony VK3JED/VK3IRL |

Check the schematic of the FT-7 one day, you'll find an audio oscillator keyed by the key, the output of which is sent to both the audio amp (for sidetone) and the SSB modulator. -- 73 de Tony VK3JED/VK3IRL |

According to you, anyone who ran/runs CW on a exist!) Don't be afraid to pick up a key. It's just like "computer illiterate" where most of the problem is based on being uncomfortable or afraid to learn. Real CW is very easy, and while there are lots of idiots (usually at the lower edge of the bands) there are plenty of hams willing to slow down and help you, myself included. Check out SKCC, free membership, lots of fun awards, and most importantly, very friendly people always willing to slow down for newcomers: (Sked page for members, have to ask about that once you join, but even without joining you can go there and see where on the dial we are) And remember, you can always "cheat" with the Signalink whenever you want. (I just recently did for the contest this weekend.) But the more CW you do, the faster you'll send/receive, and you eventually won't need to "cheat" with a computer anymore. There is a misconception about what CW is. CW is a carrier that's keyed on and off. A single RF carrier, without any AM or FM on it. (MCW is an AM signal.) That's what a CW key does to the transmitter. At the receive end the incoming RF signal is beat with a local oscillator, (hetrodyne), to produce an audio tone for the speaker or headsets. Now, how the RF signal is produced is of no consideration. A SSB tone can be keyed on and off, or the whole dang transmitter can be keyed on and of. If the transmitter sends out a RF signal that's keyed on and of it is CW, and most, if not all, modern transmitters do it with an audio oscillator to produce SSB, and the SSB RF signal is off-set to place the signal on the dial frequency. Traditional CW has one trait that no other mode can claim - simplicity, and besides that, it's rather effective in poor conditions. PSK-31 is also alive and well, along with a whole host of other digital modes that use even less bandwidth. Let's remove the complexity from the US regulations, and stop holding the rest of the world back. Jump in, the water's fine, the code's still running hot. :) -- 73 de Tony VK3JED/VK3IRL |

I consider "cheating" using anything but a straight key.

As much as I love SDR and advanced digital modes - I spend the bulk of my on air time these days running data modes, there is something elegant about the simplicity of hand sent and aurally received CW that the newer modes will never have. Sadly, I still have to get my proficiency up to be able to use the mode effectively, that's on my bucket list, among a zillion things to do. :) -- 73 de Tony VK3JED/VK3IRL |
