I had the same issue with my 7K into a HI-Q 4"? Put mix 31 on all cables including power, no luck. Swapped the HI-Q for a KJ7U Shorty II and problem solved. I think it has to do with the fully exposed coil of the HI-Q compared to the Shorty where the child depends into the lower mast. I also noticed RX was much quieter in the Shorty too.? YMWV! Re: Mobile Installation RF shutting down radio
"Rear corner of my Truck"... Explain...
Above the tail iights??? or Just behind the cab? In my installation a 2002 GMC 2500HD Duramax Diesel extended cab., The Control head is in the over head console. No sunshine washes out the display there.? The transceiver main unit is mounted under the drivers seat. With a "BOSS 2" screwdriver tuner. The antenna is a Hi-Q 4 inch unit with a 10 inch mast to a cloverleaf capacity hat that uses 3 36" stainless steel 0.1 rods form the cloverleaf, using set screws with the center a 1" aluminum Hex cut from Hex Bar. and threaded with 3/8 thread straight thru. My whip above that is from a discarded HAMSTICK.? This is mounted to a "Headache Rack" just behind the cab on the truck bed. I designed the mount using 1.5" x 1/4 aluminum attached to the headache rack,? and a hing then 1.5x 3 plexiglass plate with a hole where the base of the Hi-Q is mounted. At the top of the head ache rack. I have a black PVC 1" pipe cut to fit over the uprights on the headache rack. it is tywrapped to the Hi-Q mast just below the Coil assembly. It braces the antenna in the upright position. The base of the Hi-Q is 3-4 inches above the pickup bed top rail and 7-8 inches away from the drivers side rear of the cab. There is a 2:1 ferrite core unun under the plexiglass in a box to better match it to 25 ohms. as the feed point of the antenna is NOT 50 ohms.? Now the Hi-Q coil is totally above the roof line by 2-3 inches. Then the 1 foot 3/8 rod to the clover leaf capacity hat and then the 4 foot SS top from a ham stick. It is below 13 feet 6 inches so traveling highways is not a problem and mounted on the drivers side it is in the center of the road not by the trees on the side of the road. Now for parking garages, oil changes or? such times I need to "lower" the antenna? I just pull up on the Black PVC brace and lay the entire antenna down in the bed with about 2 feet of the top whip protruding from the tailgate. Takes 5 seconds to fold down or raise the antenna. The top of the headache rack I have 3 more NMO mounts for various antenna's and a LED emergency light for SKYWARN type adventures. I also run a 3/4" braided strap the 4 coaxes and power for the lights, between the bed and cab. I cut a 2" hole in the back of the cab just above the floor and placed a PVC bushing there so wires will not chafe.? So everything is grounded. I might add the top of the headache rack I added a piano hing and a aluminum plate that the NMO type antenna's and the LED emergency light can "tip into the bed, So if I want to carry, a ladder or pipe, I can place it on top without crushing an antenna or light..? I was fortunate to get the headache rack? at an exceptional price because the manufacturer is 30 miles away in Winfield, Kansas. I installed this about 10-12 years ago. I bought the truck new. It arrived at the dealer on 9/10/2001 and I told them I'd pick it up the next day. the next day was 9/11.. For reasons I will not go into now I am keeping the truck "forever"? I have to reinstall everything because it's in the bump shop- a hit and run and I am having a total repaint job. It should be ready 3-4 days as soon a bumper arrives made of unobtainium.? Personally I have no chokes in use, I do know the pickup bed is only held on by 4 bolts as we removed my bed to fix the typical bottom rear cab rust all GM pickups have. I believe you have a grounding problem. You may even have to ground the exhaust pipe..? I would invest in a nanovna and start checking impedance's... You did not mention if you use a unun. Your Hi-Q is not a 50 ohm feed point till It gets to about 20 meters.. Years ago UnUN at the feed point was covered extensively at the Hi-Q web site before it changed hands.? the 2:1 unun I use lowers 50 ohms to right around 23 ohms. Works great on 80-40m mobile. . I can see you having this type of problem going between a unibody car and a pickup with a frame. Chrysler user manual says no 2way radios over 3 watts... GM -- call the GM Tech center in Warren, Michigan they have all kinds of info on installing 2 way radio's..? Larry W8LM ARRL Life Member- Licensed 57 years 11 months. |
Re: Mobile Installation RF shutting down radio
开云体育Make sure the small screw that secures the remote cable connector to the radio body is installed and tight. The screw serves two functions, keeps the connector physically attached and electrically connects the cable shield to the radio chassis. If you're running an amp I would install one or two larger ID mix 31 snap ferrites on the remote cable close to the radio body. If you have enough remote cable loop through each ferrite 2 to 3 times. Some ferrite on the coax and power cable couldn't hurt, either. Ferrite chokes are your friend in high power mobile installs.Good luck! 73 Oct 14, 2023 10:09:14 PM Simon WW via groups.io <hanzinzl@...>:

Re: Mobile Installation RF shutting down radio
开云体育Hi, I recently fixed a 7000 for a friend that a son as you hit tx with no modulation it would go pop and then reboot. Did it only on 20 and 15 m. I found a cap in the lpf not fully though the board.?? To fix that is a whole strip down of the radio.? There are numerous earthing fingers on the boards.? I would make sure that they have good contact with the outer case on both sides. They are quite sensitive around the driver section.? Check all pcb to chassis screws are tight as well.? Guess you have already checked fuses.? 73 Simon ZL1SWW.? -------- Original message -------- From: W1JCW <w1jcw@...> Date: 15/10/23 1:49 pm (GMT+12:00) To: ic7000@groups.io Subject: [ic7000] Mobile Installation RF shutting down radio Now that I have the remote kit setup RF is getting into the radio and shutting it down when I run my amp and on 40m with no amp. It would help to know what the mix and size was of the choke used, who made it and the number of turns through the choke. Max KG4PID

Re: display vibrates/wiggles on tx 14 MHz
Thanks David, Dallas, and Rick. I haven't added anything new to the setup, but I did check all my antenna connections and found one that wasn't snug, so maybe that was it. Thanks Rick for the suggestion of the mounting screws. Sadly a bit beyond my abilities but I'll keep it in mind. I'll keep a closer eye on connections and I'll get chokes for power cables.?
Thanks again, guys. 73 Colin N2TQT |
Re: display vibrates/wiggles on tx 14 MHz
Snug all of the circuit board mounting screws.these are the ground paths for the unit. A problem often found in factory repair facilities. On Tue, Oct 10, 2023 at 7:45 AM Dallas N4DDM via <mylastname=yahoo.com@groups.io> wrote:

Re: display vibrates/wiggles on tx 14 MHz
Colin,
My gut reaction would be RF getting into the rig...? Check VSWR, substitute a dummy load for your antenna, and check all RF Jumpers and your ground connection...??
?
Have you added anything new to your setup; new Watt/SWR meter, jumpers, antenna, etc....
?

Tighten all your antenna connections and ground leads. Use rf chokes on head set leads, power cables ect. It sounds?like rf is getting into the radio display. This is a frequency sensitive issue. 73 va3mrj On Mon, Oct 9, 2023 at 10:27?PM Colin N2TQT <colingee@...> wrote: Since writing this, a few hours ago, it seems to have resolved but I don't know why. Re: IC-7000
开云体育Hello HughI have the separation kit which includes the OPC-1443, but I am using the MB-62 mounting bracket for my IC-7000. I can send the cable and MB-105. I got mine free when I bought my IC-7000 from HRO, so I can send it at no cost to you. The cable includes the attachment screw. I did open the cable packaging because I wanted to see if it would fit onto an IC-706 MkIIG. It didn't. ? 73 John Denison KD5YOU On 9/30/2023 1:36 PM, Hugh Aodh O’Brien

OPC-1443 alternative Re: IC-7000
Hugh,
Originals are hard to find and expensive when found. DL5AL makes an OPC-1443 alternative which I bought from him for EUR 71.88 in 2021 via is Ebay store. On that version the?mounting bracket MB-105 is not needed. I am very happy with it. His contact info is:? support@... Email him and ask when he can make you one.? 73, Jim WI6X |
