Re: Help me fix my latest IC7000 failure

Chris,

Here's a link to a document in this group's Files section that has measurements at key points in the ALC circuitry under various conditions.? It is located at the end of the document.? The first part shows typical measurements of the TX RF levels also, which may affect the ALC readings, although other conditions such as SWR and DC current also feed the ALC circuit.

Re: Audio issue with internal speaker

Internal speaker audio is looped through the external speaker jack. It’s very possible for the jack to cause a loss of internal speaker audio. Worse yet, it can tear off the circuit board. The repair or replacement is not a trivial undertaking.

Yes the external jack works fine, I may try some contact cleaner as a first attempt at fixing it.

Re: Audio issue with internal speaker

I had to replace the speaker/phones jacks on mine.?
These things are pretty "cheesy" and if you use the speaker / phones jacks they get where they are intermittent in connecting the speaker and need a little wiggle to get to connect. The internal speaker disconnect is a little better, but these things are getting pretty old these days.
I have had three and ended up selling them while they are still working well, but I still miss the IC-7000 because they are just so PRETTY!
When I regret selling I look at the repair bench at the IFR 1200 Super S and remember that the sale financed it.

Re: Help me fix my latest IC7000 failure

Hello Dan,?

I have a very similar problem with my IC7000. My ALC meter is pinned at full when ever transmitting on SSB. FM and AM don't seem to have much if any modulation looking at the signal on the tinySA.?

I haven't been able to test at full power as my largest attenuator can only handle 10W.?

I did find R960 measuring 0 ohms and replace it with a 330ohm with no improvement.?

I'm only seeing a few mV DC at that resistor. Should I be seeing more?

Any suggestions for where and what to test related to ALC?

I'm digging through the service manual and I'm running out of ideas on how to diagnose this.

Thanks and 73

Hi all,

My IC7000 seems to be suffering a somewhat intermittent issue with the internal speaker. When I powered it up yesterday the internal speaker wasn't working, after using an external speaker and fiddling around a bit it started working, then again when I switched it on this morning the same happened.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what the issue was? I'm using one of the aftermarket separation kits, not sure if that could be part of the issue?

Many Thanks,
James

Re: Audio issue with internal speaker

The speaker jacks on the IC-7000 are small and old and may not be making the switch contacts etc.
A little cleaner might help with this.
Otherwise is wiggling the plug helps and perhaps cleaning helps, but does not fix the problem new speaker (phones) jacks might be in order.

I don't have the tools or space to properly desolder the part from the board and put a new knob back in. I have the part from ICOM sitting in a package. I'm looking for someone with the expertise to replace this entire module for me. VR UNIT S1(V) is the part.

On a side note (not as important) I noticed that the upper left side of the display has lost some of it's brightness. I am wondering if this is something that can be repaired as well?

Can anyone recommend someone I can reach out to about sending in the radio for repair.

Thanks, Jimmy, K5OP

Re: WANTED: BetterRF 7000 screwdriver control

I simply tuned for maximum receiver noise which got me close enough. Used a KJ7U Shorty II.?

Tried the Hi-Q too but found them noisier than an internal coil antenna.?

Some of those tuners don’t work well as it shifts resonance so the count # gets you close but I touch it up.

I run a Hi Q 6” coil now and have an old school SDC 100, counter only and make note of my setup for cap hat, 6’, 4’ or 3’ whip so I know the settings.

All,

I was just able to find a used Tunematic TM1 units with the Icom interface on facebook of all places and snapped it up. (I had ordered the West mountain Target tuner for my obsolete Hi-Sierra HS1500mkII since it doesn’t have any turns counter.? I had been waiting over a year and it is still not scheduled to ship until late September due to multiple components being unobtainable since covid) I’m in the process of installing it now and looking forward to getting past the manual tuning which is a royal PITA. Anyone have any experience with this setup?
