Hey Laurin. I studied the service manual and it seems the external port goes first through the logic unit as CVI and CVIE.

Re: CAT dead - is there any hope?

Blake sorry I misread?your message I thought you were asking about the control port on the icom ic R7000 not the ic7000 which I also own and use. Actually I have one of those on the bench now. It is well after midnight and it has been a long day. I will pull out my service manual in the morning ? and look to see what I can do as to the parts situation on the ic7000 transceivers control port. I will respond again?tomorrow and let you know?what I find as to parts and availability. 73 Laurin WB4IVG?

Re: CAT dead - is there any hope?

Yes mine has had that problem twice before from the same residual lightning ? strike. I have repaired it both times once was years ago when icom was still actively supporting these units, however it was cost prohibitive even then because they wanted to do a board swap at over half the cost of replacement. The second time was a couple of years back I found the parts in Canada ?? and I bought all they had in stock. While most of the parts are standard parts they are still not easy to come by. I have since moved my repair facility some 60 miles away from Atlanta and still have a lot of my stock in storage, but I know where most of the items for the ic R70, R71, and R7000 because I maintain several of these units. I do not know what price you were quoted, but parts and labor for a repair such as yours should not run more than $275.00 not including?shipping and insurance costs. I absolutely will not accept or ship unless the unit is properly insured because shippers are getting bad about losing and or damaging shipped items. So they must be packaged ? properly and insured for the proper amount regardless of who the shipping company is. Re: ic-7000 alc voltages on IC-1601 and Q1604

Hello Ross,?

Did you solve this problem after? Did the problem exist in all modes??

I'm chasing a very similar problem but only in SSB.

Re: Help me fix my latest IC7000 failure

Thanks Steve,

That gave me somewhere to start.

So in FM mode I'm getting 3.003v idle and 1.72v transmit at 50% power 1.66v at 10% power.?

In SSB mode I'm only getting 10mV idle and no change with transmit. So I guess that helps narrow the problem down. Something is really loading down the ALC in SSB mode. I'm really struggling to see how mode selection is being done in the service manual/schematics.?

I also verified that I had modulation on FM and that seems to be working fine. On the tinySA it looks like I have modulation on AM too. Just nothing on SSB.

The service manual has very little on how the SSB side of things works.?

I guess I'm going on a wild goose hunt for a shorted capacitor. I wonder if its getting warm enough to show up on thermal camera.

Thanks and 73

Re: Help me fix my latest IC7000 failure

Chris,

Here's a link to a document in this group's Files section that has measurements at key points in the ALC circuitry under various conditions.? It is located at the end of the document.? The first part shows typical measurements of the TX RF levels also, which may affect the ALC readings, although other conditions such as SWR and DC current also feed the ALC circuit.

Re: Audio issue with internal speaker

Internal speaker audio is looped through the external speaker jack. It’s very possible for the jack to cause a loss of internal speaker audio. Worse yet, it can tear off the circuit board. The repair or replacement is not a trivial undertaking.

Yes the external jack works fine, I may try some contact cleaner as a first attempt at fixing it.

Re: Audio issue with internal speaker

I had to replace the speaker/phones jacks on mine.?
These things are pretty "cheesy" and if you use the speaker / phones jacks they get where they are intermittent in connecting the speaker and need a little wiggle to get to connect. The internal speaker disconnect is a little better, but these things are getting pretty old these days.
I have had three and ended up selling them while they are still working well, but I still miss the IC-7000 because they are just so PRETTY!
When I regret selling I look at the repair bench at the IFR 1200 Super S and remember that the sale financed it.

Re: Help me fix my latest IC7000 failure

Hello Dan,?

I have a very similar problem with my IC7000. My ALC meter is pinned at full when ever transmitting on SSB. FM and AM don't seem to have much if any modulation looking at the signal on the tinySA.?

I haven't been able to test at full power as my largest attenuator can only handle 10W.?

I did find R960 measuring 0 ohms and replace it with a 330ohm with no improvement.?

I'm only seeing a few mV DC at that resistor. Should I be seeing more?

Any suggestions for where and what to test related to ALC?

I'm digging through the service manual and I'm running out of ideas on how to diagnose this.

Thanks and 73
