Re: Tune button

Assuming you have the 993 interface cable in the 7k 4 pin tuner port,? there does seem to be a problem with some radios - my 993 tuner worked fine with a 706, but the same cable did not work with the 706MKIIg or the 7000.? I assume that the start line is not being pulled low enough by the radio to trigger the tuning. I put an external push button to momentarily ground? the start line, and all works as expected with both of the newer radios.?

I have the same setup. When tuning stops, it is usually caused by the #1 wire breaking at the molex connector. If you have a tool for removing molex pins, you can solder in a jumper?
Since mine is a travel rig, I pack a spare cable.?

Hi Paul,
thank you for your answer.
My 7000 is connected to the radio interface of the 993B using an original MFJ-5123I cable.
Please also note that when I push the tune button on the 7000, the "Reverse" needle of the SWR meter of 993B has a pronounced forward dip and the 993B emits a tone. Immediately afterwards, the needle goes back to the initial position. No power from the IC-7000.
The needle also dips when I change band.

Best regards,

The 933B by itself is only going to sense RF. You won’t have control of it without the MFJ-5123I interface cable. What you are seeing is normal without the interface cable.

Re: My IC7000 no workin at 50 mhz and uhf

I don't see any obvious signals or IC that might cause the problem.? If it were my radio I would remove the Logic board from its shielded enclosure and inspect the solder joints.? I have seen two older units from early 2006 that eventually failed intermittently (in 2015 I think).? When I inspected under a stereo inspection microscope (10-20X) with a ring light, using a micro-pick to apply pressure to each lead, I found about 40 joints that were pasty and would move under light pressure.? I could plug the Logic board into the Main, turn on the radio and get it to fail by slightly flexing the PCBA.

To repair, I had to clean the old flux off the joints first, apply new flux, then reflow each problem lead with a fine-tipped iron and just a little solder.? ?Normal hot air reflow wouldn't work.? After the rework the intermittent Logic board problem was fixed, although there were other problems in the UHF mixer circuit.? I didn't find any problems with the BGA IC's.?

Let us know what you finally find the problem to be and how you fixed it (hopefully).

Steve, W3AHL?

Are you using a UBS-to-serial adapter? If so, make sure that the COM port number hasn’t changed. If it has, change HRD or the assigned port so that they match.

?

Windows may have updated the driver behind your back. You may be using a USB-to-serial adapter for your computer, and it may be using a Prolific chip clone. If that is the case then when Windows updates the driver it can replace it with one that detects the clone chips. It fails as you have described – everything looks good, it gets a COM port, etc. etc. It just won’t pass data.

?

See if you can “Update Driver” in Device Manager and roll it back to an older one. They are available on Melchior’s web site, and Wouxun.com, and other places.

Dave,

??????????????? It looks like you damaged the CI-V port somehow. I always recommend avoiding hot switching the port by making all connections while the radio is turned off. I even like the computer interface device to be powered off too. If you have a scope, you can make sure the radio’s CI-V transceiver setting is turned on and you can see the data on the CI-V. I tested a working 7000 on the bench this morning. The CI-V port idles around 3.2 volts. But when you spin the tuning dial, the observed DC voltage drops a little, down to about 2.6 volts as data is sent. This is very much dependent on you volt meter and how fast it can change its displayed voltage. Regardless, apparent DC should change when the radio shifts from idle to actively transmitting CI-V data.

??????????????? Another thing you can do if you have another Icom HF radio is connect the two CI-V ports together. Make sure both radios are at the same baud rate and CI-V transceiver is on. Everything you do on one radio should be followed by the other radio. It should work both ways.

??????????????? I hope this helps but I suspect your port has been damaged. The actual components are inside the logic unit and they are pretty tiny.

?

Thank you,

Group,

I’ve recently lost the ability to communicate between my 7000 and HRD using the RTS-01 cable. I checked the voltage on the CI-V and have about 2.5v. An Icom rep tells me that is where it’s supposed to be. I don’t appear to have any issues with the cable – no error messages in the device manager – and the radio settings match the settings in HRD. I had to have the CI-V circuit repaired about a year and a half ago on the 7000, but at that time, I had no voltage on the jack so it was obvious. What could I be missing?

I have similar problems, i found my 6mtr-vhf-uhf antennas are too close to my radio desk and rf trips the 12 volt supply. Antennas about 10 ft away on roof of shack. Try with reduced power or dummy load and see what happens. Ciao! // John K3NOQ

For a bottle of wine I give the following advice:

Open the unit and remove and reseat the CPU box.
This flat tin can on top, fastened with 2 screws only.

If the error remains do the obvious,
wiggle and reseat all connectors and cables.
Careful when moving the flat cables, they easily go broke.

Hello Steve thank you for answering me,
I answer with the same sequence of your questions:

the details visible when it stops working are black screen and a continuous whistle and everything is blocked nothing works, to restore the functioning I have to physically remove the power to 13.8 volts .

If I switch to a memory channel programmed in the 6-meter band, it makes the same fault.

It is not a problem related to heat, the defect is manifested both on hot and cold radio.

Yes uhf the problem is the same, same defect.

I do not think it's a problem with the flexible cable, the radio has never been opened, never repaired until now.

I have already tried to reset the cpu as described on page 25 of the user manual, but unfortunately the problem remains.

These are my answers. What do you think if I replace the cpu? I am a process technologist and I work in an electronic board assembly company, I have all the technology available for electronic board interventions also bga step 0.4 mm qfn qfp, all electronic components in general. I also have the possibility of doing x-ray, so it does not scare me to replace the components in my radio. The CPU has the firmware inside? Is it possible to read it before replacing the cpu? Is the firmware protected by reading? Thanks again for your patience, I send you a bottle of Italian wine !!

Ciao, Stefano

What are the visible symptom details when it "stops working and crashes"?? Is the display panel blank?? If you switch to a programmed memory channel in the 6M band instead of using the UP band button does it still fail?? Does it always do this or only after being used for a while (heat? related?).

In UHF does it have the same problem as when going to 50 MHz?? Your sentence says "same problem" but then also "nothing dead everything works".? I assume you meant "everything dead, nothing works" maybe?

It sounds like a Logic board problem or flex cable problem.? Has the unit been modified or serviced recently?? Have you tried doing a CPU reset (page 25 of English user manual, erases all memory channels)?

Your English is much better than my Italian!

My IC7000 no workin at 50 mhz and uhf

Hi Jim, my ic7000 has problems, when I change band with the up or down button and step from the bands hf to vhf it stops working and crashes. Switching from 29.999 mhz to 30 mhz the monitor goes off and everything stops, nothing works anymore. If I turn off the power supply and turn it on again it will work in the lowest band I was operating. In vhf everything works correctly. Same problem in uhf, nothing dead everything works. Is it a software problem? I looked at the wiring diagram, it could be the up pins 51 - 52 of ic1302 failures that enable via ic2151- ic2152 and ic901 MST MCK and MDT. Or one of these failure? Maybe L7 and L9 are not enabled? Can you help me ? Sorry for my english, I'm Italian ...
Stefano

Hi John,

?

You can purchase the exact replacement from icom at the following URL:

?

Just fill out the form and e-mail it to Icom, and they will get back to you.

?

Their part number is: ICOM Microphone switch IC/.HM169.007

?

I recently bought one from Icom here in the UK and it cost ?3.29 plus tax.

?

That’s approx. $4.32 plus tax at today’s exchange rate.

?

There will obviously be shipping on top of that price.

I had the same thing fail on my 7000 mic. I found the OEM part # but nobody had them in stock, or had a long lead time with large minimum order.

I found a similar part that has the same package and works great so far on a common auction site. The part #: DHT-1106AB, 3.85mm 4 pin, and it was $6 shipped for quantity of 20.

Re: PTT switch source ?

The switches are available in the US from mouser.com.? Search on their web site for?SKQJLBA010? .? That is the exact ALPS switch that Icom ships as a replacement part.? It is a different model than the original switch was in that it is sealed and is rated for more cycles.? They currently only have 16 in stock, with 1000 on order.? Cost for quantity 1 is $1.13.? The sealed switch has a dark gray button instread of the original unsealed switch which had a red putton.

It is important when installing the switch to use minimum heat on the leads, to prevent oxidizing the contacts.??
The maximum tip temperature spec is 662 degrees F (350 C) using a 20 watt iron, applying heat for a maximum of 3 seconds to each lead. ?No flux solution should be applied to the board or switch leads (just use flux core solder).? That is per ALPS specifications.

I forget if Mouser has a minimum order amount.? If so, they are a good source for Fair-Rite ferrite chokes.
