Re: [IC-7000] RE: Icom 7000

Hi Jerry this is just one of the many problems you will face with amateur radios being tide to computers and software programs. so getting to technical subjects like null modem cables or serial cables is just one topic that always gives issues. let alone issues like if it is 7 bit with one stop bit besides the baud rate.so you could be hours trying to sort out these issues.??????????????????????????????????????????????? best regards Robert G6LLP From: "jerrya@..." I
have had a number of issues with computer programming of rigs, the IC-7000
being one of them. Usually the handshaking problem was related to using the
wrong com port, if you are using a USB to Serial adapter. I found a program
that checks your adapter to determine which com port it likes.

The
link to the program itself is located near the bottom of the article which is
very helpful as well.

Hi that is true of most amateur radio sets they need to be kept cool. there is no way they work when they get warm due to construction costs. after all made for a price so they need to in a position or given extra cooling. that is a fact of life. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?? Do you only have the problem when the radio is hot? ?My oldest 7K is only used mobile now and it exceeds 40 C here often in the summer and I have no problems. ?My SUV isn't garaged, so it gets HOT inside, but I haven't measured it. ?I usually don't turn on my 7K until the car has had a few minutes to cool down. I did some thermal analysis in 2011, although below 40 C. ?During TX when the internal fan turns on, there should not be a problem even with CW key down for 10 minutes continuous at 100 watt output. ?I can send you the info if you wish, if you really feel you have a thermal problem. The radio is only specified to operate at a maximum of 60 C., which true even of expensive Motorola commercial radios. ?I suspect that the 7K might have to be operated at reduced duty cycles at 60 C, however.... It's pretty hard to beat the old Motorola speakers that you can find at most hamfests. You just have to put a new cable and correct plug on it for ham use. Paint it to match your vehicle interior, if you'd prefer.

Re: [IC-7000] FM flickering green recieve light
Bob Brooks
Try turning your squelch counterclockwise until you get squelch noise and see if the green light gets steady. You might be just at the edge of squelch and the green light will flicker. If you turn the squelch higher it should go off completely. On Tuesday, December 3, 2013 5:50 PM, "alex.c.lawler@..." wrote:

Re: running hot.
Please ignore. I have trouble shooted and eventually resolved the issue. I have however noticed the Icom runs hot with a burning smell after a couple of hours of use. Do any of you use external fans. Also when buying new should anything go wrong do Icom have a warranty scheme. I'm guessing by law they have to. I know the shop I purchased from only offer 28 days.

HI Helen ?????????????? many of these problems coming to light are as a result of the lead free solder used in the construction of these modern transceivers. so a dry joint is the most likely cause of a lot of problems with the Icom Ic7000. ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Hi I am new to this group my name is Helen Vk3ry I have lost SSB upper and lower on my rig. I have been able to track the lack of TX down to the 1st IF? my thoughts it may be the processor, the rig is quite happy on am fm Rtty and good on ex. it implies the Dac is ok too,alc indicates very high alc although there is no alc voltage. I sure I am not the only one with this prob? ? ? ?? Any one with similar experience? KInd regards Helen VK3RY лл

Re: [IC-7000] Re: Grounding plus newbie questions.
Charles Scott
All:
This is, as someone else mentioned, a very bad idea. The ends of unterminated cables are high impedance node, which means high voltage. For a couple of reasons, the voltage at that point can be many times the voltage getting coming into your house from the strike. The bigger issue here is the state of knowledge in the Ham community about grounding and lightning protection. The comments here reinforce that concern (sorry), and often suggestions passed from Ham to Ham can be down-right dangerous. Of the practical methodologies for lightning protection for Hams, there's primarily two approaches. One is to disconnect EVERYTHING that comes into your house from your antennas, including any ground conductors, and throw them outside and well away from the house. But of course you need to do this well in advance of any potential lightning event. The second is to learn about and implement a "Single Point Ground" and methods to minimize the energy entering the house on ALL conductors, including any ground conductors. If you're not familiar with Single Point Grounds, don't assume you know what it means, look it up. There are other approaches, but they get progressively more difficult to implement. Also, the "blitz bug", more commonly called "lightning arresters", in most cases do not protect you or most of your radios and associated equipment, they only protect your radios from lightning and other impulse energy from coming in on the inside of your transmission line. So-called "RF grounds" are another discussion, but safety first. Chuck - N8DNX ----- "Yes. And in the event of a lightening storm and when not in use, disconnect the antenna(s) from the 7000 and place the ends into an individual clean dry glass jar. Don't put your faith into a blitz bug." |
