Ray,I operate my ICOM 7000 mobile & it is a really SIMPLE menu system to me.It is like having my ICOM 756 PROII in my pickup truck.Once most of the menus are set they do NOT need further adjustments for my usage but if they are it's usually just the push of a button or two & you are done.AWESOME little all around package for home or mobile operations. {:>)

If you purchase a IC-7K, I think you will not be disappointed. While it is a menu driven rig, the menus are set up in a way that is very intuative for the operator, IMHO. I used to own a FT-897. I had purchased a 7K and played with them side by side and found that the 7K had a MUCH BETTER user interface. Whereas, the way the menus were set up made the 7K much easier to operate. Thus, I took my 897 and traded it for another 7K! :) Yes there is a bit of a learning curve for the rig. Then again, this is amateur radio too, and there is always a learning curve. :) Once you get to know the rig a little bit, you will find that for a very small radio, it is well thought out in its layout. Not only the menus, but HOW the buttons and menus all work together. It really is a rather simple radio to learn. :) I hope this helps a bit. :) 73's Steve/KC8LQV --- In ic7000@..., "raypark1472" wrote:

1. I have downloaded the 7000 Manual. Perhaps I have missed something but I haven't seen any special order for the menus. 2. I did read where one or two of the menu selection buttons on the front panel can have certain menus "set" for them. Could I set these in a certain order? 3. I'm not so touchy about interpreting the menus once I get to them, but I am very concerned about being able to get to them. 4. This would be my first menu operated rig. I am trying to get back into ham radio after a long absence except for a few spurts. Thanks Ray |

Since the nice table of measurements didn't keep its formatting, I uploaded a document to the Files area: 7K TX RF Levels.doc

Re: Tx power problem
There is quite a variation in gain across the bands even when the unit
is working correctly, for reasons I haven't looked into further. Here are some measurements of the various levels from the IF, Driver Input, Driver Output and ANT1 connector output, all taken on the bottom of the PA board last year on a good 7K to help someone troubleshoot a similar problem. I need to go back and record the output level right at the FET's also. Mode was CW, output power measured with external meter to dummy load was ~100 watts. I used a digital scope with a probe that used a ground spring clip on the grounding barrel at the tip (instead of a 4" ground lead). The ground lead picked up too much RF and the measurement varied a lot depending on the lead position. With the grounding spring clip, this was eliminated. Re: Tx power problem
Well, in the past when I have seen a transceiver's RF output devices fail, there is usually NO output power after failure. But that has always been with the older BiPolar devices, such as 2SC2879, MRF4xx, etc...

Tx power problem
I picked up a used IC-7000 the other day with a peculiar problem.
The power output is lower than expected, and varies greatly from band to band on hf. VHF and UHF are fine. The power cord is fine, no fuse voltage drop issues. I am testing the rig on an IFR COM120B and fully equipped service bench. So no antenna load issues. If I enter the alignment menu, and go thru the full alignment procedure, I see a few issues. First off, the gain adjustments have issues. I can achieve the spec value for the 14mhz and 28mhz settings, but not the 1.8mhz setting. Also, when setting the 1w, 25w, 50w, and 100w set points, the 1, 10, 25, and tune settings set just fine, but the 100w and max apo settings will fall short at about 70w. I do see 100w at times in certain adjustment steps, but not when I should, so the final pa stage appears to be ok. Also, all of the bias alignment steps work fine. The one step I am questioning is the point where the service manual tells you to preset the four transformer/inductor cans to the top, then adjust the one for max power with the tone generator modulating the rig at level which keeps the power below 50w during the procedure. But there is nowhere in the procedure which refers back to the other 3 cans which you preset to the top. Upon completion of the full alignment procedure, the radio only puts out 10w on 160m, hardly anything on 40m, and about 70w on 10m. Now that I think about it, maybe there is a band pass filter issue? I am missing something somewhere....... Eric K2CB |
Re: [IC-7000] Re: Iambic paddles
Tightwad that I am, when I first got my IC706MKllG, I built a paddle from
available material, junk, and scrap. It consisted of a hunk of a 6" stainless ruler, two angle brackets to hold it to a slab of 3/4" plywood, dot and dash contacts made from binding posts and 8-32 bolts, and the dot thumbpiece of scrap plastic and the dash knob from a scrapped hand key. The whole biz worked like a charm for more than a year until I bought my first Vibrokeyer on E-bay. It is now my 2 meter CW paddle on my 706 now in the base since two failures of the 706 HF finals. My second Vibrokeyer is running the mobile IC7000. Net cost, zero, net fun and satisfaction, a bunch. 73, Joe On Tue, Jan 29, 2013 at 6:49 PM, mathprof53575 <wilson@...> wrote: ** -- Joe Weisberger SEMPER FI [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
Re: Iambic paddles

I was planning to build a paddle set, then I came across the Black Widow paddle kit. It is very nice. eham review at . That says price is now $57, I think I paid a bit less than $50. It does take a bit of metal working experience if you want it to look good, mine does really look nice, but I think almost no metal working background would be needed to make it work fine.

Possible bad news, though: The page for the source of the kit, seems to have disappeared from the web. So the kit may no longer be available. But if you can find it I think it is a bargain. Bob Wilson, WA9D --- In ic7000@..., "James Brock" wrote:

Thanks in advance for your responses. John KC0UUT" Hi John, I've had this happen before, and in my case, the problem was solved by better grounding of the IC-7000, which is a bit sensitive to RF. Good luck. 73 Jeff/wb0m |
