Just a few weeks ago, I upgraded the firmware in my Kenwood TS-480SAT

- worked great. And I agree that any new rigs should be able to do
that!
Also the manufacturer should support firmware updating via the computer
interface and document it. That way thrid party control software could
provide support for it, e.g. by a wizard or the like.
AFAIK the IC-7800 allows firmware update via its ethernet port. However
as its undocumented, an Icom utility software has to be used.
