Firmware upgradeability

Huze@work

You bring up a valid point Adam.
It's about time the big three start incorporating Flash upgrade
capability into Ham rigs. Put a Flash ROM micro in there
instead of an OTP part (I'll gladly pay the extra $5) with
bootloader code and the appropriate interface to allow us
to update the firmware if and when fixes/updates become
available.

Granted, there will always be the odd case of someone
who messes up the bootloader and ends up having to
take the rig in to be serviced but I'd like to think that we
technical folks won't run into that too often. The usual
risks and warnings would apply.
My non-technical neighbor can Flash upgrade his computer
motherboard but I can't do it with my $1000 Ham rig.
What gives ?

As far as I know only Tentec has gone there.

If this is true a mod to offer ATV TX would be great!
That will really make the rig different

Here is an excellent reason to buy the IC-7000, even without TVRO:
It is a
100% IF-DSP-based radio, with the capabilities (and likely much of the
performance) of the IC-756Pro3 and IC-746Pro, in a small mobile package.
There are no filters to buy either!

Would ATV (video) reception be a rumor or a wish for the IC-7000. I'm
thinking about getting but can't come up with a reason yet.

Hi Adam,

The capability of TV reception is a welcome addition for those of us
who are
involved in ATV and would like to have the combined capability of
conversing
in VHF/UHF and watching the output of an ATV repeater on, say 421.250.

Regards,
Ismail, KT6LN

Hi Ed,

I believe this refers to domestic delivery in Japan. The FCC
certification
process will delay US release, probably until 3Q/2005.

The TV-receive capability will be of little use in Canada, as almost
100% of
TV service is on cable or satellite and there are very few
over-the-air TV
transmitters left. Much of the UHF-TV spectrum has been
reallocated to
land-mobile and wireless services.

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

...Firmware upgradeability
Absolutely right! Given how much we are paying for these rigs, this
capability ought to be very standard. I hope Icom listens to this one.

Also the manufacturer should support firmware updating via the computer
interface and document it. That way thrid party control software could
provide support for it, e.g. by a wizard or the like.

AFAIK the IC-7800 allows firmware update via its ethernet port. However
as its undocumented, an Icom utility software has to be used.

One point: Usually, the issue of a flash ROM is defined in terms of the
longevity of any product. Since the development cycle for Icom's best
and brightest products, eg. IC-706 / 706MKII / 706MKIIG and now the
756x series--I say, given the fact that the development cycle for these
products is now reaching several years (the IC-706 was first introduced
in 1999, IIRC), it seems that flash upgradeability would be a distinct
development support advantage.

I hear you but IMHO there's really no excuse
not to use a Flash microcontroller in this
day and age. Whether or not a Flash upgrade
is ever required during the product life, the cost
to incorporate the capability is minimal. I don't
know about you, but it sure would make me feel
more comfortable to know that the capability is
there on a piece of equipment that I just paid
$1000 for, especially if I buy one from an early
production run.
It could also allow the equipment manufacturer
to get the product to market faster, then offer
updates at a later time (i.e. ATV transmit).
We're not talking about toasters or VCRs here
and techies love "updates". I like it !

A cynic might conclude that not providing an
upgrade path such as firmware flashing capability
is simply a marketing strategy to force turnover for
sales of the new and improved replacement product.

Having worked with the D-STAR products, in ICOMs most
advanced product line, I can tell you that you will
not be seeing user upgradeable firmware, and
especially bootloader access any time soon.
