Playing Style
Ron Newman
I'm more of a pianist than a Hammond player but I've got B4. Seems to me
that playing a conventional Hammond style is limited harmonically, I mean what else can you do, bass note in the left hand, and a melody note with the right 5th finger and supported by a few chord notes with the other right fingers. Yeah, I know, great sound, but nothing like the great variety of voicings (chord shapes) you can do on a piano. The Hammond just doesn't sound good with those piano voicings, perhaps because of the complicated registrations, 5ths and 3rds added into the layer of every note. It all gets too muddy. Jimmy Smith doesn't do much more than that. It's more like playing a drum kit. The music is achieved by using the, how can I say, percussive effects that a Hammond gives you. The sound that Jimmy gets is as much due to the sound of the group that he has set up, particularly the guitar to keep the chord sequence going while he plays those single note melody improvs. And the drum backing gives him a supporting interest. If you copy just what Jimmy does, playing solo, without the rhythm section, you don't get there. For solo playing you fall back on the, eventually unsatisfying, like I said above, LH bass and RH melody supported by some chord notes. But you will disagree with me? Hopefully. Ron. |

Re: [hammond_zone] Playing Style (Lacking?)
You guys are comparing apples and oranges. Pianos are way cool instuments
when played right. Organs are way cool instuments when played right. Comparing them against each other and calling one better than the other is probably due to pilot error in the player. They both have black and white keys just as a Jaguar and a golf cart both have four wheels. Think about it. ? O.H.F. BOB |

Fw: C-3 with Note problem
开云体育Hello all:
I have a C-3 and Leslie that has a couple of
problems.? The C-3 doesn't have a clear note that sounds on it.? In
other words, when you play middle C, you can hear C# and D also.? Although
you can still play the organ, the clarity of the individual notes.
?
They Leslie is a 122.? When you first turn on
the organ,?it seems to warm up and a?hum fades in to be
loud,?then slowly fades out!?
?
Any Help?

I think they are chords that usually have more than 5

notes, so you have to use the left hand to complete the chord. ex: c13,b9 = C, E, G, Bb, Db, F, A. Hi guys, |

开云体育I believe this is a term generally used to refer to left hand
chords e.g: root and 5th, root and 6th etc.

Re: [hammond_zone] BLOCK CHORDS?
Hi to everyone,
As a newcomber to the zone but an old B3 player from way back, been playing since 1952, maybe I can help clarify block chords. They are very simple to play. The right hand plays the melody with FULL CHORDS filled in and the left hand simply plays the melody one octave lower with both hands on the same manual. A good example would be Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll" used with a walking pedal line (very effective) Hope this helps. Don |

开云体育Hello Darren,
?
Unfortunately I can't listen to that song, but off
course i know that The HAMMOND SOUND requires a B3 or a simular organ. But I'm
from Holland and B3's are very hard to get here. At this moment I'm satisfied
with my l122. You see I'm a student. But one day i'll own a B3 with a leslie
122, for sure. I'm saving money all ready.
By the way?I'd really like to hear that song.
You don't happen to have a mp3 or something?
?
Greetings,

I know what you mean. As we run the C3 into a leslie 147 it is relatively simple: The 1/4" jack of the cable that comes from the organ plugs into any distortion device ( prefeably a tube unit) and then goes into the preamp that is connected with the leslie. Now you can switch between clean and distortion. However, we use this heavy distortion only for studio clients that as for it. I think zhis setup is not possible with the 122 leslie due to balanced audio and the very high audio levels (up to 6V) But here is something else you might find interesting: As already mentioned in previous postings, we have equipped the organ with a tube reverb unit that is easily installed with an adapter socket under one of the tubes. Now the good thing: Not only does the reverb sound nice - the organ gets a much crunchier sound when the last 2/3 of the expression pedal are kicked it. As this, due to compression, doesn???t make it much louder, we now have the clean and the crunch sounds at hand. As this overdrive is happening inside the organ, it is possible to have it even with the leslie volume lowered.
