Re: [hammond_zone] Leslie&X66 Speakers
Lars Karstensen - Infinity Trading ApS
开云体育Dear Jim,
?
I have had some X-66 during time, and it is a great organ. It
is not to be understood as a "normal" B-3-sounding Hammond. It is
special, and more into the Cinema style. I normally call it the Stadion-organ,
as it normally has been used during sport-shows etc.
?
It is a entertainer organ, no doubt.? The special thing
with the 12-77 cabinet to the X-66 is more that it is build to get the best out
of the vibrato system. And this is really something on this organ. I have never
lisened to the Condor system, and you write that it is by Hammond. Does it say
so? I have never seen documents on that.
?
I have had Leslies as well as 12-77 hooked up
with the organ, and sound is always a matter of personal preference.
?
I might help you to find a X-66 though my main
sources is in Europe, and i do not know where you live. We might have a
powersupply problem.
?
Looking forward to hear from you
?
Best regards
?
-----Oprindelig meddelelse----- Thanks
Lars......Yes I do have the X66 it came with a Condor Sound System ?

This is all new to me as I always had Wurlitzer organs and always wanted the X66.. I don't know what happened to the Tone Cabinet for it. ?This X66 belonged to an entertainer, that is probably why I have these four big Condor speakers with the organ. ?I was told that the organ's real sound comes best with the tone cabinet made for it..I don't know as I never heard it with it. Another person told me a Leslie 122 would sound good with it and another said it would sound terrible,I don't know as I am new to the whole Hammond sound anyway, ?But i do like the sound of the X66.Do you have the X66??? Old caps (was Re: Hammond B-100 or B-200)
Right now I plan to exchange the electrolytic caps in or C3 ?s preamp due to Hi Peter, There is a Mexican company which still makes multipart capacitors (the company name is "Aero-M" or something like that), BUT their product is reported to be of very low quality, and is not recommended. NOS (new old stock) caps are obviously not a smart option, since they, like the caps in your organ, are way past they're pull date. So you're best off replacing multi-section caps with axial electrolytics. Leave the old multi-section caps (disconnected, but) in place, and install the axial caps inside the chassis. More details at: If you really want to retain the original look: I've heard rumors of a fellow who will take your old multisection capacitors, remove all they're guts, put new, modern electrolytics inside, and seal them back up. (My guess is that this is more of interest to antique radio restorers than to Hammond restorers.) Jeff |

开云体育To find seperate 12-77 cabinets for the X-66 is
kind of difficult as they always do come together with the Organ. But you might
find a set (organ and cab.) for a low cost, and that is highly recommendable as
parts are kind of difficult to get for this organ. I do assume you have the
organ, since you ask for the cabinet.
?
If you are to hook up the 122 with the organ, you have even to
do some special wiring. And you still get a mix of voices on the Leslie. As fare
as I have tried you get the reed voices on there as well, which is not always
recommendable.
?
Best regards

Hi,
I might be able to help you out. I do have some connections that I need to check up on. I do also have a hugh pile of original spare parts, though I assume that any capacitor from the good old days no longer will be all that good. Please do also remember that it is not only the capacitors that get out of order. Also other components can get out of order, not having the correct value anylonger. I also experienced that it sometimes do help to change the sockets for the tubes, and I even had some new wires into one of the amps I repaired and it helped! Re: [hammond_zone]
Dan & Connie
开云体育Hello to all ??? I purchased a VK-7 when they first came on the market, being in a band situation I fell in love with it, I can adjust the keyclick and the overdrive to just the way I like it. I also have a BC (1936) Hammond that I installed a trek II percussion kit into and play it through a 145 leslie, believe me this setup sounds awesome. So with this information of what I have, you can imagine that I’ve done some serious comparisons. As an example, on my CD project I used my VK in the studio, once it is in the mix you cannot tell it’s a clone, even when soloing it shines. The VK is great if you’re moving around, but I have to be honest here I’m on the old BC in my home studio more than I am on the VK. The VK is great and I highly recommend it, I would try renting one or the other because it took me a month to really get used to the clone and I have not tried the XB2. ? ???? hey Wim
Marc Saint-Félix
开云体育Hi,
?
-I did the same inquiries as you, two years ago. I
was led to the conclusion that Roland products such as the VK-7 keyboard are not
that bad but they're not Hammond made. The little bonus feature the VK-7 offers
is a few other sounds in?its memory : piano, strings, brass.... but I'm
sure it's not your point.
?
-I tried both oberheim keyboard and sound module,
cool, but not Hammond made.
?
-Then I met a guy who owned a Hammond
XB-1?keyboard and..... the great XB-3. The latter is very impressive, but
let's forget it. I first heard the XB-1 through "regular" speakers, good job.
It's really better than the former XB-2 keyboard and not very expansive. I also
think it's aggressive in higher tunes, but you can partly get rid of this
problem by adjusting the internal treble volume. Then my friend played the XB-1
trough a Leslie122, it sounded great,?not far away from the real thing.
?
-Another efficient Hammond clone is?the sound
module version of the XB-1 and its "remote" : the Hammond XM-1 + XM1c. The first
unit (XM1) is the actual sound module, same features as the XB-1, and you can
control it with a?small satellite (XM1c) which includes the famous
drawbars. It's a fine product, plus, it's very pretty! You can buy those 2 units
separately, and thus have a Hammond clone made by Hammond itself for a cheap
price : the XM-1 alone. Then you will have no actual drawbars but you can still
virtually control them by pressing keys on the sound module, it's less practical
but cheaper.
?
-The Hammond XK-2 is the latest full single
keyboard by Hammond. I tried it a few weeks ago, it's fine. Its main advantage
is the B3-like keys. It's expansive though.
?
Far be it from me to tell you what to buy, I would
recommend the XM-1 + XM-1c. It's really easy to use, to carry, it's small,
pretty, efficient, cheap, and made by Hammond. Since you don't mind owning a
full keyboard version or a sound module, the latter is definitely the cheapest
one for the same result.
I personnally own a XB-1, I can hear no significant
difference between that keyboard and the XK-2. I don't think there's any
actually. It only seems to be a matter of shape : the woodwork is of a better
quality and keys are a lot better too. It's getting very close to my B3 anyway.
In my opinion the internal Leslie simulator of all those clones "ain't doin'it"
: way too much FM effect and not enough AM effect. In fact, It sounds a little
like horns with deflectors, which none of us use.
?
Regards,
?
Marc.

开云体育Dear Volker,
?
I have been working many years with the Hammond XB-2, and
despite the fact that this is now almost becoming a vintage instrument it is
still superior to the Roland clone! It is almost as you can feel the difference
while playing, regardles that the keys are wrong on both of them. Playing with
closed eyes you can instantly tell the difference whether it is a Hammond or a
copy.
?
If you can get your hands on a XK-2 it is even better, there
you have the unique keyboard as well. I do agree with Darren, that the clones
might sound great on certain tunes, but Hammond does it all around, and I assume
you still want to play more than a few tunes!?
?
Best regards
Lars
