¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi,
?
-I did the same inquiries as you, two years ago. I
was led to the conclusion that Roland products such as the VK-7 keyboard are not
that bad but they're not Hammond made. The little bonus feature the VK-7 offers
is a few other sounds in?its memory : piano, strings, brass.... but I'm
sure it's not your point.
?
-I tried both oberheim keyboard and sound module,
cool, but not Hammond made.
?
-Then I met a guy who owned a Hammond
XB-1?keyboard and..... the great XB-3. The latter is very impressive, but
let's forget it. I first heard the XB-1 through "regular" speakers, good job.
It's really better than the former XB-2 keyboard and not very expansive. I also
think it's aggressive in higher tunes, but you can partly get rid of this
problem by adjusting the internal treble volume. Then my friend played the XB-1
trough a Leslie122, it sounded great,?not far away from the real thing.
?
-Another efficient Hammond clone is?the sound
module version of the XB-1 and its "remote" : the Hammond XM-1 + XM1c. The first
unit (XM1) is the actual sound module, same features as the XB-1, and you can
control it with a?small satellite (XM1c) which includes the famous
drawbars. It's a fine product, plus, it's very pretty! You can buy those 2 units
separately, and thus have a Hammond clone made by Hammond itself for a cheap
price : the XM-1 alone. Then you will have no actual drawbars but you can still
virtually control them by pressing keys on the sound module, it's less practical
but cheaper.
?
-The Hammond XK-2 is the latest full single
keyboard by Hammond. I tried it a few weeks ago, it's fine. Its main advantage
is the B3-like keys. It's expansive though.
?
Far be it from me to tell you what to buy, I would
recommend the XM-1 + XM-1c. It's really easy to use, to carry, it's small,
pretty, efficient, cheap, and made by Hammond. Since you don't mind owning a
full keyboard version or a sound module, the latter is definitely the cheapest
one for the same result.
I personnally own a XB-1, I can hear no significant
difference between that keyboard and the XK-2. I don't think there's any
actually. It only seems to be a matter of shape : the woodwork is of a better
quality and keys are a lot better too. It's getting very close to my B3 anyway.
In my opinion the internal Leslie simulator of all those clones "ain't doin'it"
: way too much FM effect and not enough AM effect. In fact, It sounds a little
like horns with deflectors, which none of us use.
?
Regards,
?
Marc.
