Cliff - The polarity of the wires doesn't matter, only that both
red wires go to one side of the AC and the 2 blacks to the other side.
These non self-starting motors don't have a clue as to rotational
direction, in fact if you can get it up to speed going in the reverse
direction, it'll lock right in! All of the synchro hammond clocks will
do this too, and I've tried it, it works. I didn't feel any younger
though.
