NEW White Paper Released | Generative AI for Health in LMICs

The is thrilled to announce the release of ’s new white paper, , with support from the !

?

From August to December 2024, Stanford CDH conducted an extensive review including two roundtable events, in-depth interviews with dozens of people who are actively working on applications of GenAI to health and healthcare in LMICs (including academics, health system leaders, implementers, and funders), and a quantitative survey with over 100 respondents. Additionally, the research team reviewed 14 GenAI accelerator programs for health that have collectively supported over 250 projects worldwide.

?

The white paper has a specific focus on the use of GenAI tools to drive health-related behavior change, and highlights case studies from Audere, Girl Effect, Jacaranda Health, Noora Health, and Viamo. The scoping analysis, framework, and key recommendations are inclusive of a range of health use cases, to contextualize HBC interventions within the wider ecosystem, and facilitate broadly applicable learnings. It explores the questions:

  • Where is GenAI being used and what are the greatest successes?
  • How can we realize greater impact and unlock the full potential of GenAI, both for behavior change and broader healthcare applications?

?

The top five key recommendations of the report:

  1. Sharing Learnings
  2. Focus on Actionable Measurement
  3. Improve Language and Localization
  4. Improve Technical Capacity & Shared Infrastructure
  5. Improve Digital & Basic Health Infrastructure

?

We encourage you to explore the findings and share your thoughts on how your organization will incorporate the recommendations articulated in the white paper!

  • View and download the paper .
  • Watch the recording of the white paper’s launch event held on March 26 .

Dear GDHN colleagues,

I would like to invite you to join HIFA. Healthcare Information For All (HIFA) is a global community of practice that is committed to improve healthcare by promoting the availability and use of reliable healthcare information. It has 20,000 members from 180 countries and is administered by Global Healthcare Information Network, a UK-based nonprofit in official relations with WHO since 2022.

?

In addition to our ongoing spontaneous discussions on global health we are holding a deepdive on the informal use of mobile phones, in collaboration with Makerere University, WHO and Norwegian research institutes. Details below. Join here (free):

?

mHealth-Innovate: Exploring healthcare workers informal use of personal mobile phones - Research findings and implications for policy and practice

Watch the video (9 Minutes):?

?

Exploring healthcare workers’ informal use of personal mobile phones
- We know anecdotally that healthcare workers use their own phones to plug gaps in the healthcare system
- This research project aims to explore how they are doing this, the reasons for this, possible benefits and harms, and ways forward
- The mHealth-Innovate research consortium has worked since 2021 on a multi-year project involving:

?

* A HIFA thematic discussion - published in Oxford Open Digital Health. Glenton C et al. 2023: Using an online community of practice to explore the informal use of mobile phones by health workers

* A qualitative evidence synthesis - published in the Cochrane Library. Glenton C et al. 2024: Healthcare workers’ informal uses of mobile phones and other mobile devices to support their work: a qualitative evidence synthesis
* Two primary research projects in Uganda to explore the issues with health workers and with policymakers (2024) - Publication in progress.

?

OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH AND FINDINGS

Read the summary (12 pages)?

?

IMPLICATIONS FOR POLICY AND PRACTICE

In 2025 HIFA's role is to review the research findings collectively and discuss the implications for policy and practice.

In the FIRST phase, from now until 21 April, we shall discuss the findings informally. Do the findings resonate with your experience?

Specifically we shall revisit the findings of our 2023 and 2024 papers and invite HIFA members to comment. We shall explore a range of questions that arise from the findings.

In the SECOND phase, from 22 April to 25 May, we shall build on all of the above to look to the future, with a structured thematic discussion to explore strategies for addressing the downsides of informal mobile phone use while retaining the benefits.

?

JOIN THE DISCUSSION!
If you are not already a member of the HIFA forum, please join us (free):??- all interactions are taking place on the forum.

French, Portuguese and Spanish speakers are invited to join HIFA-French, HIFA-Portuguese and HIFA-Spanish

???3 April at 14:00 CET

??Register:

This app was created through close collaboration with the and field testing with several Ministries of Health and HISP groups, and has been developed jointly between HISP Vietnam and . It uses the international form of medical certificate of cause of death as its basis along with the ICD-11 coding system to codify deaths. It does this through the use of the DORIS (WHO Digital Open Rule Integrated Cause of Death Selection) API, allowing you to directly code your causes of death directly in DHIS2.

In this webinar, we will provide an overview of the app's features, its functionalities, benefits, and usage, including:
?
  • Seamless configuration: Install the app using existing Tracker metadata from your own instance.
  • Customizable data entry: Start with the international form of medical certificate of cause of death as your baseline, and add sections or data elements as needed.
  • Full access to the ICD-11 coding system: This includes looking up each of the codes, viewing their chapters, and seeing their full definitions.
  • Use of the digital mortality rule engine: This allows you to use DORIS to automate the selection of your underlying cause of death.
  • Cause of death certificate generation: Generate a customized certificate for sharing death details.
  • Export to ANACoD3: Full export to ANACoD3 is available, allowing you to perform detailed analysis on your data.
  • Full translation support.
