UK availability (+speech processing)
Waters and Stanton in the UK are saying January 2001 for UK availabiliy according to an e-mail today (http://www.wsplc.com) There was a full page colour ad in RadCom today from Martin Lynch for the FT817 (see http://www.hamradio.co.uk) stating about ?799 pounds but no date given. Also, can anyone tell me if there is speech processing on SSB? 73s Rog G3XBM

speech processor
Roger there is no speech processor except for a little analogue clipping if the alc can be "hit" hard enough . I must say however that after owning one of these radios(I actually have one that was purchased in Japan) my hat is off to Yaesu for taking the marketing risk to develop this radio (I have worked a few JA's on it already and they are all surprised that I have one ). I have been begging Kenwood and JRC for years and they felt the demand would not amortize the r&d . For a portable rig the 817 surpasses my wildest dreams . Sure it will probably be improved but no one should complain with what we now have available, this is indeed a milestone , I use it more then my 756pro and 870s . Solid State HF amp.
4
I've had this "2 pill" amp for 3 months and I couldn't be happier. At home with 20 watts drive, I easily get 500 to 550 watts pulling approx. 45 amps. on 75 and 40 meters. A small muffin fan easily keeps up with the heat generated. I usually cut the drive back to get approx. 250 watts output. My Dad runs another amp with 7 watts in and says he's putting out just under 300 watts pulling about 25 amps. He loves it and when we meet on 40 meters, over 350 miles away, his signal is clear and audio is perfect. Mike is correct, talk to Mel WA5UTK at KComm in San Antonio, 1-800-344-3144. About a month ago, Mel said he has sold amost one hundred of these little amps. With no complaints. When I bought mine, the price was $ 329.00. I plan to buy another amp soon for my truck. If you have any questions, just let me know. John N5XYO

Any Green Radio People Out There?
4
Quick poll/question. On another list I subscribe to, the question has come up about what effect the FT-817 will have on the value of USGI and other military radios and/or "paramilitary" or "tactical" manpack HF radios like the Kachina MP-25 or maybe the SGC 2020. I'm wondering whether the FT-817 will create it's own new market, rather than bleeding off buyers of those radios. It's really a different radio in almost every respect, I think. Any opinions? 73 John Newell KB1FPM

FT-817 FAQ and MODS

Take a look at the URL (With a japanese character enabled browser) http://www.qtc-japan.com/oct_2000/817_1/817_1.html Appearantly, in paragraph 2 and 4, there is a description of the nine jumpers on the front panel.......... Now, if only I could read japanese.............!! Maybe someone in the group could translate the information for us. Regards, Erik OZ1GIY

Going 2 wate
Yeah, I'm lusting after an 817 -- especially for my long bicycle touring trips -- but am going to wait until QST reviews the rig -- and I hear from you early adopters about how it works under shack and field conditions. I know QST wants to review it ASAP. Come on, QST, review it before the end of the year!! Has anyone compiled a list of all the options that Yaesu will offer with the rig?? I think there's a battery option -- any DSP or filter options? Bil KD6JUI

817 in hotels and portable
2
Haven't really looked at adms as I will be using this product mostly stand alone . As for antennas I have built a beautiful multitapped 4 foot base loaded whip which works on all bands , I unfortunately hate base loading especially on "short " whips since the antenna becomes "voltage loaded" and produces poor field strength , the best hotel antenna that works well is a long wire (say 25-40 feet depending on the band ) with the MFJ "pocket sized antenna tuner and a 3 foot length of hobbyshop semi rigid piano wire (which bends in my suitecase ) and a suction cup , the piano wire is used as a fishing rod with an elastic band (for an insulator at the end )to hold the wire approximately 2.5 feet out of the hotel window away from the brick wall . I have worked many countries this way with 5 watts and the 817. For a powersupply I use an NEC cell phone 12V switching supply which is literally shirt pocket size , supplies a max of 650ma which is all that is needed since the batteries charge during receive and the TX duty cycle is sufficient to allow some charging as well (probably between syllables ) Hope this answers your questions 73's Howard VE2AED _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
