Bought 817 at Pacificon 2
I paid $716.95 for my FT817 at Pacificon. I paid cash, and got an additional discount. We had the radio at the NorCal QRP Open House Saturday night, and it drew a huge amount of attention. I heard it operate, and I can't wait for mine to arrive. I love the fact that it is an all mode rig from 160 to 70cm. 72, Doug, KI6DS

What Pacificon is
Pacificon was the Pacific Division ARRL Convention held this past weekend in Concord, CA. The dealer that I bought the 817 from was HRO in Sunnyvale. Ken is the manager's name and the guy that I bought my rig from. NorCal QRP Club hosts a very large QRP Forum within the main convention. We had 7 speakers from as far away as England and Maryland attend and give presentations. It was a lot of fun. 72, Doug, KI6DS

Ordered my '817 at HRO...
Folks.. Just ordered my FT817 from HRO Sunnyvale (from Ken, K1ZKM, great guy). Funny thing is, orders taken at Pacificon (no matter which HRO employee took the order) are routed to the Oakland, CA store - prob. some kinda sales-zone rule imposed by Yaesu - so there is apparently a big waitlist forming at HRO/ Oakland. But the Sunnyvale store only has 2 or so people on its 817 waitlist, at least for now [one of them being me!] so call HRO Sunnyvale (California) directly. Ken seems to be handling all the 817 stuff, it appears. Alas, the Pacificon promotional discount price is no more; I paid $769+tax, IIRC. I can't wait. This is gonna be *COOL*. Just wondering: is there a DTMF/keyboard mike that'll work with the '817? It'd be kinda nice for 2m/440 repeater stuff. 73s Bill N6AOT

First I'll apologise in advance if someone has already tried, however I couldn't see anything in the archives. Second I buy my equipment cheap in places like HK so I dont have a Warranty (so dont tell me about voiding it!) Thirdly I haven't picked up my radio yet so its all a bit academic, but if you look at the front panel schematic you will see 9 jumpers user 1-3, SRX, STX, EXP, TS 0-2, The latter 6 have * next to them implying they vary from model to model. EXP have to mean Export? What about SRX,STX? Has any body looked at these to see what they currently have and has anybody tried changing them? Some one also mentioned a mil version it that is true I would bet it has a different micro (has to to get the temp spec!) so would also mean different SW so if it is true and there is one one could just order the new micro as a spare and replace it. Very easy mod! Cheers Eric. P.S. I've only looked at the cct for about 5 min so I will now have a look to see what the physical limitations on the unit really are. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Eric Freund, Engineer. carry case
Hi. Does anyone know about vinyl or ( preferred ) tough leather cases? I absolutely insist on all my portables being sheathed. They had a terrific thick hard leather case for the original FT-x90 series ( 290, 790, 690 ). Pres Waterman W2PW c/o Patchogue Motors, Inc. Long Island Ford and Kia dealer GO BILLS!

FT-817 Questions
I have a few questions about the new FT-817. 1. What is the specification for frequency stability for the standard reference oscillator? 2. Is the optional high stability oscillator a "plug-in" change or does it involve screwing around doing some soldering? 3. I saw one large slot for a plug in filter. Is there only an option for one additional filter or two, one for SSB and anther for CW? 4. Does it look like there maybe room to install one of the Inrad high performance crystal filters inside? 5. Is there a line on one of the jacks on the back which can be used for an external amplifier keying line? 6. Is there a headset/boom-mic which can be used with this rig? 7. Can NiMH batteries be used in place of the NiCAD battery pack? 8. Any known TX/RX mods? If so does it screw up any of the automatic options such as auto repeater shift etc. like on the 847? 9. Is there a "hidden" alignment menu, like the 847 has, which lets TX power, RX gain etc. settings be changed? Leland C. Scott KC8LDO

DTMF Microphone...Backlight 4
Hi... Spoke with folks (Amateur Radio Techs) at Yaesu today and asked if it will come with a DTMF mic and they said no. I mentioned it would be useful to have a DTMF mic (esp for rpt use) and was told you can use (buy) the MH-36 mic that has the DTMF pad. They said the mic that ships with the radio is a dynamic mic that has better sound quality especially on SSB , while the DTMF mic has an electret element that doesn't sound as good (Is this true?) . He said it would be better to use the original one, but one can use the MH-36 though the sound quality will not be as good. I thought that since the FT-100's mic already has the DTMF pad it would make sense that the FT-817 would come equipped similarly. Hope this helps Aloha and 73, Dale AH7D PS: By the way is the blue display the same light violet blue color as the FT-100/FT-847/FT-90 and is the orange display basically LED backlighting or is Yaesu using blue and amber LEDs?

FT-817 CPU/controller notes...
Folks... Took a look late last nite at the various schematics uploaded to the files section - specifically, the controller. [It's in the file FRONTschematic.pdf, IIRC.] The CPU here is a high-integration "all-in-one" controller that has quite a nice little CPU inside - besides ROM, RAM and peripherals. It's part of Hitachi's H8S (actually, H8S/2000) series. The part # is HD64F2345FA, meaning it's a -2345 variant architecture, with flash memory ("F") in a 100-pin ("A") SMD package. The Hitachi website is: http://www.hitachi.co.jp/Sicd/English/Products/micome.htm Drill down to find the .PDF file for this controller. I did a quick perusal (I've seen H8 stuff before; Yaesu seems to like it; my VX5 and VX150 have smaller 8bit H8s on 'em) but this is a quick, approximate rundown... This very capable 16/32 bit CPU can be clocked up to 20MHz. It has 128KB flash ROM, 4KB RAM, 6 x 16bit timers, 2 x 8 bit timers, 8 channels of 10bit ADC, 2ch 8bit DAC, something akin to a DMA controller, and 2 multimode serial channels. Various memory ranges can be configured to be of differing bus widths. There's some smartcard support features too. Not all of these features are used on the FT817 - for example, no external memory-mapped peripherals are used. Other chips (PLL, DDS, etc.) are controlled via fast serial data transfers - even "user memory" for settings, freq memories, etc. is stored in an external serial EEPROM (24C64). A quick read indicates this CPU apparently has a small fixed factory boot ROM space so that its (empty) flash can be programmed via a serial port. It can also be programmed/verified as a freestanding chip on a chip writer (it's a 27F101). I note *no* ROM code protection features [other than some anti-go-wild stuff, there's no code-lock or encryption]. Thus it appears the code can be somehow dumped and analyzed & tweaked, worst case requiring de/re-soldering of the chip. I did NOT immediately see a graceful way for code to be dumped out of the flash ROM to the outside world while still soldered to the controller board. There *may* be some way the code can be dumped from this chip without desoldering it and reading it on a burner; I will have to look into it. [It is likely this code is mostly written using compiled C. Speaking from quite a bit of reverse-engineering experience, reading disassembled C is sometimes much harder than reading human-written assembly code; we humans think somewhat alike, and not much like a compiler ;-).] There's probably quite a few "hidden" features, modes, etc. here we should find out about and that the more brave amongst us may wanna tweak. After all, I am indeed a charter member of the International Association of Warranty Violators :-P 73s Bill N6AOT wiese@... ------------------------------------------------- William M. Some circuit observations
Hi had a bit of time to have a bit more of a look at the cct. 1) whats the 2m intermod like. It looks like it would be worse then the VX-5. as there is no special 2m band pass filter. Either that or 2m is excellent but out of bad RX completely shot! 2) looks like NiCd pack is detected automatically and trickle charged at about 12mA or if you use your own cells you can manually select charge from the menu (or I supose fast charge the NiCd pack) at 120mA. 3) looks like the unit is Linear or antenna tuner compatible as the CAT/LINEAR plug on the back has a line that goes low on TX, a TX tune line and Band Data as well as 13.8 current limitted (10 Ohm res) and the programing serial lines TX/RX. 4) there is no data line from the mike so they are using a generic DTMF chip in the Mic to generate DTMF tones. With only the 3 user programable buttons available for controlling the radio. That is unless of course the radio decodes the DTMF tones to operate certain functions which is possible I supose. Well hope that helps if anybody is interested. Cheers Eric. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Eric Freund, Engineer. Oilphase, Schlumberger Oilfield Aust P. Hello Fellow QRP'ers Just a new member checking in. This FT817 does look like an interesting rig. Being a QRP rig, I imagine most U.S. users would be operating CW with it. This brings me to ask, does anyone know more about the selectivity of the receiver? If there are provisions for filters and are they the standard yeasu filters? Last question will this rig drive my Henry K2 linear????????? Just Kiddin!! Regards KE7MU Brad

Smoke Mode...?
Double hearsay, from another list...anyone know anything about this? Oh... and by the way, I just read a report that one of the early FT- 817 units in use by a ham smoked and nearly burst into flames due to a shorted bifilar DC input choke (no fuse!). FT817 Smoke Problem 4
I think in fairness it should be pointed out that the owner of the FT817 that smoked had been inside the radio, and had retweaked the transmit chain for much higher power than the radio is designed to operate at. No flames intended here, but could it be that the meltdown of the choke wire was caused by "Operator" adjustment or misadjustment?? Also, we have a sample of one here so far guys. Any news on when the radios are supposed to hit the US?? I must also say that I am thrilled to see a major manufacturer do an all mode all band rig designed for QRP!! If this radio is as big a hit as I think it will be, we will probably see the others fall in line. That means choices guys, and we all benefit. I remember when you could not buy a superhet transceiver kit. NorCal changed that with the NorCal 40, and look at what we have now. Competition is great, and it encourages innovation and progress. This is gonna be fun. 72, Doug, KI6DS
