What Id do with mine Pres
2
Hi again excellent results I think with all you excitable hams doing ur bit of detective work, especially Vic a local lad to me (just 50km north of me) ive never met or spoke to Vic until now tnx for pic(s) Vic. (sorry Vic but it does rhyme Hi Hi). Pres I would sit it on my dining room table and hook it up to my 2m 4 ele cubicle quad in loft (yes I did say 2m ie. 144mhz resonant) and tune on 18mhz and work the world with 1 watt ! read it again I havent made any typing mistakes, my 144mhz quad resonates 1.1:1 on 17meters!!!and gives me better results than my 66ft outdoor skywire @35ft height. I have had a reply from 1 US guy whie I was using 1w from FT100 usb on 21mhz, oh yes it also resonates on all other bands except 80m & 160m WITHOUT a tuner!! I know it sounds a bit daft and beats all laws of physics but it does work. (I wouldnt dare use more than 5w theough it) but I dont need to . So ther epres thats what Id do with mine and as our other fellow friend would do (the one who likes hanging from national monuments) I would simply enjoy. best of luck to you but if ur going to be wired up to a backpack looking sus please wear a bullet proof vest. Hi Hi. Well I did say it would have internal power and Vics site says it, I am not unimpressed with the inners Vic I think its much neater than the inners of the FT100 and has anyone spotted the little crunchy things yet to expand tx/rx ? (those who want to). I just hope there is a door in the bottom casing for easy access to batteries it would be a shame if we had to keep taking the 4 side screws out each time you wanted a quick re-change of AA's. and I hope Yaesu have mastered the old FT2/6/790 dc problem on some MK1 radios where as when you have internal batts fitted and dc in-line you may over-charge batteries, some were actually charging the batts through the dc line as well as the charge socket. (ok if they are not ni-cds) I am sure as one guy pointed out the ducky is just 6,2 & 70cm. so I would keep using my portable telescopic 80,40 & 20m bnc mizuho antennas which extend to 58" and down to 8" for storage (and with being telescopic they resonate over a wide range) the one in my pic of 706 has the 20m at 18" len on the top which is resonant on 21.240 usb with 2.8w I had just received a 5.7 from east bulgaria, not bad eh!. anyhow enough of my memoirs for now probably bored u all to sleep. I would take mine everywhere I go so ther u are Pres theres my bit , I will send chapter 2 later Hi. de John Land of the Prince Bishops (Durham) NE England.

My key questions
Hi group (again)..... (oh! not him again , so soon! isn't he the one who just run my pc outa disk space with his last msg? yawn!) sorry lads just thought Id start off with a bit of english humour, My priority questions on the FT817 woud be..................... Minimum tx pwr ? 50mw then 250 500 1w 2w 5w ?? Current drain on the above ?? Does it get warm on rx ? (it is small and the 100 & 706 does, and they are ventilated) How warm on tx ? Are both the front (top) bnc & rear So239 inter-linked ie. do both do either ? (that sounds confusing) ed. what I mean is 160m-70cm at the front and 160-70cm at rear so you have a choice (I hope its not just vhf bnc & hf rear!!! Cannot see any sort of auto atu in there unless theyre more cunning than we thought ?? Does it have same 3 position equalising dsp based speech system as on the FT100 ?? anyhow thats enough to be going on with I think Pres how about you ? and as Pres says how are u going to use yours.........answers on a postcard please to...............(another bit of english humour. oh well ttfn all de John.

(No subject)
Well now the Universal Radio page confirms most of what I got out of the Japanese brochure. Still it would be great to have a clear copy of the RX numbers, just to wet one's whistle. I am on my way to my friendly hill in FM19 for this week end VHF test, Sure would be good to test the new toy. 73 de Patrick W3PO/VQ9PO/ex:F6DWY ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Take a cold shower... Re: Yaesu says December, 2000!
I think everyone needs to calm down a bit. If Yaesu is monitoring this group, and it's a pretty sure thing that they are, I would not blame them to ratchet up the price a couple hundred dollars. That's just based on the enthusiastic response to the FT-817 before it's even legally acceptable to be sold in the US. You know, I want one too. But sheeze, I have a feeling that when some of you folks get yours delivered, you are going to get a room with it. I mean, I haven't heard this much excitement since Michael Jackson thought he got booked at Boy's Town. So settle down. We'll end up getting Yaesu to rush the 817 to market and then all us early adapters will end up shipping them off to Ceritoes for mods and patches like the FT-100. ;-) 73! =paul= W8KC Collector of Ten*Tecs and other fine plastics. A new industry trend?
2
--- Mike Maiorana <mikemo@a...> wrote: Of course they do -- either in the lab or at home. The entire industry has much to learn from the K2, and I seriously hope that everybody does. Here are my own lessons, in no particular order. 1. Receivers as differentiators. Most anybody can build a great transmitter (even more so with recent DSS chips e.g. Analog Devices). The difference between a great radio and a so-so one is all in the art of receiver design. 2. Technology leaps forward in niche markets. Much like the mobile community gave us a new form factor (FT-50, IC-706, DX-70 and FT-100), the QRP community may set new standards for power consumption, portability, receiver quality and price. These are long overdue. 3. Architecture. There are many benefits to separate the traditional 100W RF stage from the receiver (size, thermal, manufacturing technology, QRP to name a few). 100W linears are low-tech products nowadays and can be had for real cheap (when neded ;-) Let's hope that QRP radios inspiers "mainstream" design of radios, amps, tuners and antennas. Perhaps it's time for "docking" (much like in the portable PC industry) to become a viable option in quality ham gear. Just my wishful thinking... 73 On 4z4kq

User assignable antenna sockets
Hi all, I presume they mean you can program via menu if you want v- uhf inputted from bnc, or h-v-uhf (all) or similair in rear SO239 ? if so ideal but BEWARE if you use bnc with long hf whip antennas, ok if you keep rig upright and out of wind but if you hold it at an angle the stess factor on the center pin in the bnc socket will cause it to widen and after a time you will find the contact becomes intermittent. Im speaking from experience with what Id done to my 706 & 100 (putting adaptors onto the SO239 to convert to BNC). I was ok because I renewed the adaptors ,but the FT817 bnc may need replacing as it is fixed. Just a thought. de John G0VGZ.

Sorry Bob W8CBR
That wasnt meant to be fascicius remark (sure ive mispelt that word) about putting ur specs on hi!! but as the rest say it does cover 6 as you will be aware after everyone in the group sends u a reply (please dont lads I think Bob knows now) and It will only clog our pages up. Incidentally it has got a door release on bottom of case for easy battery access. And can the lads at Yaesu USA get a deciphered spec page for us all to browse ?? even if its the sensitivity values etc Please ?? I am thinking the rubber duck looks like it comes in 2 parts if so can Yaesu tech team design some seperate add on middle bits to cover individual hf bands with tightly wound coils ?? sure it'll be an extra revenue , maybe do it in a full add - on pack with 9 extra wound hf band resonant sticks. If u do not im sure I will wind my own Sure they will be restricted but it will be fun on a hill-top or somewhere.Maybe something on the line of the outbacker ie. 1 piece with seperate resonant tapping points , just to place in between bottom & top piece. de John

817
Sorry for causing a panic. The 160-10 + 2 & 70cm in the text was confirmed as a typo. I guess either I was the only one wearing specs and saw it or everyone who saw it ignored it. How about a 5 W version of the ATAS-100 (ATAS-5 ?) driven by the 817? It could be made much smaller and portable. Gary N3JPU
