Hello FT817 group,
I am in the middle of ordering parts from Yaesu and other suppliers to refubish and repair a FT-817ND. A fellow ham gave this project to me, after it waited 3 years for a resolution, and as far as i can tell (see pics), the VR UNIT needs attention - missing knobs/potentiometers/etc. But I also noticed the exterior top and bottom case scratched a bit. But the unit was provided to me in disassembled condition, so once the parts come for the VR UNIT, I will try to put it all together. #FT-817ND.?

Is there any firmware update needed for the VR UNIT operation/installation?

Is there any diagnostic procedure available to me to figure out if any board is non-functional after re-connection of all sub-assemblies and inital power on?

Also: On the call with Yaesu (great service) USA, I was told informally that the FNB-xx series of battery packs for FT-817ND was replaced by?SBR-32MH ? is this true??
Just wanted to find out where this compatibility is specified before I consider ordering it.?

I was wondering if the Yaesu VR UNIT assembly CB1359001 came with the signal connector J4901 already soldered - or do I have to source that from the current board??

Is there any recommended practice for painting the exterior covers so that it may look a bit more modest? I was actually thinking of getting artistic and painting it a royal bengal tiger stripe pattern, just because I wanted to do that for a long time.

some answers for you.
1) no, you just solder it. There is no update to show there is a new part.?
2) use a service manual to make sure all the functions are working. There are procedures for checking TX and RX but you will need access to test equipment.
3) I don’t know if there is a firmware update available put it’s probably not user serviceable, and you’ll probably have to send it in.
4) I don’t know if the part number of the battery case has been replaced but is Beatriz Veralde at Yaesu USA told you that’s what you need she is probably right.?

6) for paint, probably a matte color, clean the case really well, I’m not sure what to do with the info sticker but keep it safe with masking take or something. To prevent unevenness you should remove all the old paint that you can. Use a primer before the final coat. Use instructions for doing automotive paint to get a food surface, including wet sanding between coats it may help get a good looking end product.?

Instead the images are stored in the group and a link to each image is provided at the end of the e-mail. Best of both worlds! Applies to files, too. I always use Plain Text for incoming which message size even further.
You can do this for all you Groups.IO subscriptions.
Folk should always try to make the file the smallest possible, while keeping enough resolution to that the detail in the image is clearly visible. Quite an art!

my question is what happened to them?
However I can understand the concern and would not mind seeing a link included to see

I believe the moderator may have deleted the images to conserve storage space. I requested it be done so if it helps the storage issue on groups.io. Hopefully the moderator will consider adjusting the group settings to resize images to small size/limit image sizes for future posts.
I apologize to all for not realizing that my images were being posted/stored with full high resolution - that was not what I wanted. For now, I am only sharing from my personal account due to limitations as I do other work on the computer. It's a folder of all photos of the current FT-817ND repair project. I haven't worked out a method for indexing at this moment. No commentary. I am the photographer for copyright purposes. All rights reserved.
The first few photos (timestamp is synchronous) show the very odd 3D plastic printed case that the transceiver was "fitted very tightly" in by an unknown party about 3 years ago. That was AFTER they had tried to repair it. I couldn't get anywhere with sliding it off the case, so I used a pliers to tear it off. Seriously ? I'll replace it with a more user friendly and easy to maintain rail/cover/jacket/bag if the radio system comes to life. Maybe even a neoprene rubber cover but that's just an idle thought for now.
If anyone can QSL the sharing process, that would be great.

I would recommend you get the FT817 "Service Manual", I think it can be downloaded from Yaesu.
Your FT817 looks pretty good inside.? So the case is scratched a little, not biggie, it is not dented or damaged.

Yes, I first thought I had the FT-817 original and was locating parts using the service manual for that, and then a few days later I was inspecting the final module PA transistors and it hit me, this is the FT-817ND – huh, a welcome discovery indeed. So I was able to find the FT-817ND service manual which is more or less the same, (with the same mistakes) but? additional sections. ? I agree with others who say the label on the new radios should have read FT-817ND. Perhaps the FCC filing requirements were too onerous for the new batch, or that the original FCC filing for FT-817 covered the 60m band coverage? Who knows. ? Can anyone tell me the observed max current draw at full Tx power on DC input for the FT-817ND? I am expecting a bench linear power supply shortly, and need to make cables and set the current limit. ? 73 de N3RDX ?

Just the fact that the serial number begins with 8N indicates that it was manufactured in December 2008 which was well after the ND started being produced so it is an ND. ? ?

FT-817ND measures 380 ma RX ±, 1.89 A TX ±, and my average is generally 800 mAh giving my internal battery about 4 + a little hours of life. ? Mike – KD5KC -- El Paso -- Texas. ? Group, got the FT-817ND unit repaired, and did my first VHF qso to a local repeater. All functions are fine (~1.7A tx on VHF). I am missing a few screws (previous owner had no idea of types of screws) and need to get some foam padding for the new battery cover, but otherwise all is fine. The front AF knob wasn’t shipped by accident by Yaesu but they are doing so and then it will be complete, and due for a nice re-paint job. I even got a programmable switched PSU (china made,) to provide 2.5~3A limited power to the rig, which takes in 20-40VDC and outputs 13.8V. ? Do any mobile operators have comments on using switched mode power converters / supplies with this rig? Or are you all on DC battery all the time. ? BTW, I would like to ask, what’s a good low-cost remote control software/hardware for a laptop based control head? Bluetooth? Serial? ?I’ll be doing comms from my home lab and exploring some digital modes/new communication modes and need to stop adding USB ports! ? 73 de Samudra N3RDX ? ?
