Hello FT817 group,
I am in the middle of ordering parts from Yaesu and other suppliers to refubish and repair a FT-817ND. A fellow ham gave this project to me, after it waited 3 years for a resolution, and as far as i can tell (see pics), the VR UNIT needs attention - missing knobs/potentiometers/etc. But I also noticed the exterior top and bottom case scratched a bit. But the unit was provided to me in disassembled condition, so once the parts come for the VR UNIT, I will try to put it all together. #FT-817ND.?

Is there any firmware update needed for the VR UNIT operation/installation?

Is there any diagnostic procedure available to me to figure out if any board is non-functional after re-connection of all sub-assemblies and inital power on?

Also: On the call with Yaesu (great service) USA, I was told informally that the FNB-xx series of battery packs for FT-817ND was replaced by?SBR-32MH ? is this true??
Just wanted to find out where this compatibility is specified before I consider ordering it.?

I was wondering if the Yaesu VR UNIT assembly CB1359001 came with the signal connector J4901 already soldered - or do I have to source that from the current board??

Is there any recommended practice for painting the exterior covers so that it may look a bit more modest? I was actually thinking of getting artistic and painting it a royal bengal tiger stripe pattern, just because I wanted to do that for a long time.
