Pros and Cons for keeping my FT 817ND
I have too many entry level radios (last count was 7) and I'm trying to decide the pros and cons of keeping my Yaesu FT817ND.? Installed is the Yaesu TCXO-9 and an Inrad 500 hz cw filter.? Also installed is the windcamp battery.? Most of the time I use an external battery.
For what its worth I also have the following: Icom 718, 706mk2G, 7200.? Yaesu ft 857D and ft 891.? Also have an Elecraft kx3. Decisions decisions? Andrew KD5CQ? |
Hi Andrew, Tough decision, you've got a fine bunch of equipment indeed. You were lucky and smart to get the inrad filter, I got one too for my 21 year old original ft817.. still puts out full power from original finals. The KX3 has a magnificent receiver but isn't very rugged like the 817....my suggestion for what it's worth, don't part with your 817ND! Hope to catch you on the band's, vy73 to the group.? ?Rick? Andrew, I also have too many rigs although been told many times one cannot, hi. Of the rigs you listed I also have some.? I would keep the IC7200 and KX3.? The IC718 is very good starter rig, but old tech.? FT891 and IC7200 about the same except for size.? If keep IC7200 and KX3 would have good 100W HF rig and KX3 for QRP, probably one of the best QRP rigs. 开云体育You asked for Pros and Cons regarding the FT-817:The FT-817, with its small display, will alert you to developing eye problems when you can't see the display, and you'll get a heads-up of cognitive decline when you find yourself looking for a nifty manual or the Yaesu manual to change an obscure setting on the radio. As for Cons, well, it's very mature technology, well-known and respected. It's a magical combination of compromises and features, but it's fundamental design is what, 15-20 years old now? You've got newer radios with DSP and other modern features, I'd say let the FT-817 go to a new home and spend some more time with your other radios. (If there was some feature/aspect of the FT-817 that was very important to you, you likely never would have sent this question to the reflector!) Hi Group:
I have an 817, KX1 and KX3. ?I like them all, but if I had to pick just one as a "desert island" rig...I think I'd keep the 817 because of it's extended band coverage... even though it is missing 60 meters. ?I'm not interested in 60, so that does not bother me. ?Truth be known, most of the time I use my KX3 for HF operating. ?It would be a tough choice just to pick one and the KX3 would be a close second... or possibly the winner, based on it's receiver and roofing filter.
The 817 is really a "does it all" rig.. multi-mode, multi-band, and only needs a 10 volt power supply for five watts.

Its a keeper unless you need to sell it to buy life saving medicine.
Small display will not get damaged like the big display on 705 Easy to slide into backpack facing up or use shoulder strap I have made 1000s of contacts on it and its an awesome portable/travel radio but yeah the cw filter is MUST. The ssb filter isnt as useful I have found Guys are selling handhelds for $300 so more value in a $300 hf radio I think John ve3ips I have a 817 and 818 and too many other radios Sent with a Palm Pilot.

Good morning,?
? ? I’m on my 2nd Ft-817nd. I found it to be the most versatile radio for the types of operating I enjoy. It’s not my only rig. But, it gets the most use. There are compromises any way you go and nothing will do it all perfectly. But, dollar for dollar, the
817 does very well. Not playing to the audience here, just a fact. There is no way a product has this much longevity and a revision without checking a lot of boxes.?
? ? When this one goes, I’ll buy a 818. The menus aren’t that bad once you become familiar.?
? ? I’m currently in an apartment. I didn’t have to give up hf or ham radio in general because of the temporary move.?
? ? Your mileage may vary. I’m just a very satisfied customer.?

Great question. Bottom line…sell 817. KX2 and KX3 SOTA activators in western NC more often have KX 2/3 radios on activations and you already have a KX3 - few 817’s used on SOTA.?With your 891 and 857 you’ve got the power for HF portable and if 2M is important to you take $30 from the proceeds of the sale of the 817 and buy a Baofeng, and build a J-Pole for those few times you want 2 on a POTA/SOTA trip. You probably have a 2M rig in the car already. KX3 has more operating features than 817 making it more versatile. With your inventory of radios I can’t see what operating capabilities you would lose sellin’ the 817. |
Thanks Chip.? The key takeaway I found interesting from your comments was the one saying:?
I can’t see what operating capabilities you would lose sellin’ the 817.And your right about 2 meters in the car and I have two handhelds covering two meters as well.? My biggest problem is that I, unfortunately, get attached to my equipment and find it difficult to give up.? I know I will sell the IC 718 but I'm not sure about the others.? ? Which is why I posted the?question.? Looking for reasons, like yours, to help push me in the right direction.? Thanks again for your input. Well said John, the 817/818 is a lifesaver, built like a tank, the finals are cheap and easily replaced, but I suspect that if the operator removes the battery pack when not in use, and uses a reasonably resonant antenna, you will never join the blown finals club, I haven't and 21 years later since I received mine from radioworld ...just my opinion,?
