Output power

Douglas Richards

Afternoon?

Name here is Douglas Richards VE3FFR?

I just recently purchased my Ft-817, and after charging the battery I was able to test the output? power.?

Vhf approximately 5-6 watts
Uhf approximately 3-4 watts
Hf and 6m, non existence.

According to my serial number? research,?
my rig was made in 2000, September, lot 81 and the 0028 unit made.?
Any suggestions? greatly appreciated.?

Thank you

You might want to check the antenna selection for HF, it can be selected either for front ant or rear ant, if your using the wrong one you wont get any output as the radio will fold back power.

All antennas are on the rear.

Hi I would say you need a new final unit, when this happens with output on VHF and UHF , it is only one of the tranny's is dead , but it is easier to change the final unit,

You should get one in your country, no need to get one from Germany,

FT817 uses the same TX power train for all bands (unlike '857 and most other all-band radios)
If you have zero power on some band it is very unlikely to be any of the transistors.

Look at the block diagram (pg 5 of service manual)

- Relay RL3017 is the HF/ VU filter switch.
- there are pin diode switches on the IF board that select HF filter bank
- there are control signals in the front panel flex that could interfere with the switching
- There are eeprom settings for each band that might be able to turn the power off
- front rear antenna relay as already mentioned - an RX noise check should let you know that it really is working the way you think it is for those bands.

Measuring the DC current on AM TX might tell you if the finals are running but there is a break after them (e.g. RL3017).
(There are mini-jumpers for the driver and final transistors VDD, so it is also quite easy to check actual final current.)

Make sure you are using the correct antenna connector, front or rear.? Will have "R" on display if rear.

The connector can be selected in menu for different bands.

There is only one PA for all the bands so if working on one band should be on all.

Be careful with the PA.? The rig has little to no protection so if using the wrong connector or bad load it can damage the PA if in TX for long period.

One other note, what mode you using for your test???

Sorry, but there is a BNC ANTENNA PORT on the front, mainly for UHF & VHF.
So, NO ALL antennas are NOT on the back.?

According to the switch on the Rtsystems? software, vhf and uhf are on the rear.

Try testing HF using CW and let us know.

Display screen says TX err

TX error normanly shows up when out of band so check your freq, but there are other possiblities for the TX error.

You need to use FM on HF/6 as well to get a carrier to measure.

Hi Douglas,

?

The antenna port can be selected for each band individually.

?

An ¡®R¡¯ will be on the screen next to the Frequency when the rear connector is selected. No R = Front (BNC) connector.

?

The default is HF/6 on rear, VHF/UHF on front.

SSB does not generate a carrier when the PTT is pressed.? You need audio to cause an actual signal to be generated.? Use CW and a key.

Take care,
