Flashing Display

Hope someone in the group can help. Have a FT817non ND with flashing display. Did all the resets I could find and even did the battery reset mod just in case that was the problem even tho I never did the battery mod or leave the battery in the unit. Had a tech look at it and told me it could be firmware issue. I called Yaesu and they said it's the pll not locking in. Can anyone point me in the right direction to repair it myself. Has anyone had this problem with their radio? All help is very appreciated.?

Yep, PLL not in lock.? Download the service manual and look up alignment.? They tell you how to align the PLL.? Just be real careful with the coils.? Also make sure your power supply is dead on 13.8 volts.? I would send it back and let Yaesu handle it.? They made it, they know how to fix it.? They can also do a checkup on it while they have it.

I found this tidbit out there:

FT817 Notes

FLASHING DISPLAY FAULT

I had an FT817ND that decided one day to go a little wonky on me. It started with an intermittent PSU cable caused the supply voltage to power on and off quite rapidly. I fixed the cable, but when I turned the rig back on I was greeted with a flashing display and no audio. I thought I'd fried the master CPU or something and I was very annoyed. Note this fault is nothing to do with the PLL Lock or TX ERROR.

No amount of resetting would work and no one on the usual forums could offer any help. So I had assumed that I now owned an unrepairable radio. I put the rig back in it's box for about 3 years and forgot about it. Then by chance I came across someone in an unrelated forum who had discovered a cure. I decided to give it a go.?It appears that the charging circuit and low voltage detection changeover logic can get its knickers in a twist, and you need to do a little strange procedure to get it reset ! Here's the procedure..

Insert some half charged batteries in the FT817 (so that the charger sense circuit knows that the batteries can be charged). Switch on the rig with a 13.8v PSU and follow the procedure to charge the internal batteries). This involves setting one menu to 6 hours time, and then on the 3 F-keys turning the charger on. Switch the rig off and the LED on the front panel glows orange.Allow the charge cycle to complete. Disconnect the rig PSU. Switch radio back on using the internal cells. Pull out one of the AA cells to make it look like the battery has depleted it's voltage. Now plug the rig back on to the main 13.8v PSU and switch the rig back on.

Hey presto ! It works. Sounds odd, and I must admit that I was not expecting it to work but it did.

For a flashing display due to PLL unlock..
Check the flat cable to the front panel.
Check also the OCXO reference... unplug and replug.

Thanks.
I just made a few minor tweaks to the text to improve readability too.
