Re: Power output instable

I got the pin diodes but suddenly, yesterday, it starts to work at full power. Astonishing, disorienting...

Re: WHATSON 3A Power Supply

Hi Tony,
?
The current rating looks adequate though marginal.? Hopefully it will be RF quiet as well.? If you have RFI from it look into the Pro Audio Engineering Kx33, as far as we know it is the only supply specifically designed to power communications equipment.? A lot more info as well as a special offer for the FT-817/818 group .

WHATSON 3A Power Supply

Hi,
?
I have picked up a WhatsOn 3A Power Supply that plugs into the mains. Will that work ok with the FT818nd as it can deliver 3A continuous. Dont want to plug it in just in case without confirmation :-)
?
Thanks
Tony

I'll alert you whe he has them...

Not too unexpectedly, the HSU277 diodes did not arrive from AliExpress. Thus, I have no update on whether my lack of UHF is due to a bad PIN diode. ?

I was warned that I'd probably not receive my order from AliExpress, and then I'd be stonewalled on a refund. That is exactly what has happened. USPS, as the last-mile shipper, reports that there's no postage on the item, which is supposedly in Chicago, so they're not going to handle it. ?I should have listened.?

Hi Mike and Jack,

The tap points in an 818ND, or indeed to the late models of 817ND, are pretty much in the same place as they used to be: +RxB still on that one via, the signal on either the output (as per official HupRF installation instructions) or the input (as commonly done by various people on the Internet in order to gain more panadapter bandwidth).

Unfortunately the latter is MUCH more troublesome to solder a wire to than it used to be because since Lot 262, XF1001 is a surface-mount four-pole filter DSF753SBF rather than the through-hole MF68 from the earlier models. This means very, very little space to solder the wire to on the one hand and a considerable risk of creating a short between the input-or-output pad and the body of the filter. Personally, after much deliberation I decided that adding a panadapter to my 817 was not worth the risk of bricking it.

If you feel brave, have got a steady hand and have sourced some very fine wire, position your transceiver so that the PLL-unit shield is closer to you and the writing on XF1001 is the right way up. In that orientation, the input pad is bottom left and the output one is top right. The other two corner pads are connected to ground and can be identified quite easily because they both have short tracks leading from them to vias.

Good luck! You will need it.

My so called bench PSU failed a few years back, not got around to replacing it,
but I used to use that for charging my 7ah gell cell.

In the meantime I just insert a 22 Ohm wirewound resistor in series with a bog
standard 13.8v PSU and that does the trick.

Re: Ft-818

That is a helpful analysis, especially if you have the schematic at hand. My practice is to print the schematic, then trace the various signal paths on it with different color highlighters. ?After some of that, it becomes easier to see the paths. If the band-specific PIN diodes are open, you have receive but not transmit. ?My diode measures open, so it’s going to get replaced if I ever get one.?

I think you’ll get them, whatever “them” is/are. I don’t use Ali Express often, but they continually update my shipment, in an effort to add something that “other buyers” get who have ordered what I ordered. The expected delivery date seems excessive even from China “slow boat”. I’m pretty sure our orders will show up before December.?

I just ordered a battery pack from Windcamp’s official store on Aliexpress. Purchased yesterday. Projected arrival is Dec 16th. I have purchased a lot of radio bits and bobs off of Ali in the past few years. The only thing that I had trouble with shipping on is a 24v battery. The seller probably shorted the postage but no way to know that. I filed a non delivered item claim with Ali (after exchanging messages with the seller a few times) Ali was prompt with their investigation and promptly refunded me. They do pretty well. I had also ordered a few other things in the past that ended up being poor quality junk. They refunded those easily too.?

It's not eBay, but AliExpress. ??

The word I got was that it's a shipping scam. The individual vendor shorts the postage, and then expects USPS to deliver it anyway, collecting the postage due. USPS tracking says they're not accepting the package for shipment. ?I've had this happen a few times. When it's from an individual, and just a bit short, I get a note in my mailbox to come and pay. ?The Chinese packages are a different story.?
