Re: High SWR on 6m...
Hasn't been my experience -- I wonder if the setting is unit-
specific. I've had 5W out at 4 bars.

Re: ATX - BNC or PL259?
1. Steel is stronger than brass; do everything you can to improve
your chances!
2. Steel is magnetic, brass isn't; maybe you can use a small magnet
to pull the spike out when it breaks.

Re: High SWR on 6m...
Yes, and 4 bars is too high. 3 is OK, but if 4 bars are showing it
reduces power by 20%. 5 bars and it cuts power by 50%.

Re: External speaker for the 817
A low-tech solution: Go to your local hardware or plumbing supply and purchase a 2-inch diameter, 90 degree, plastic pipe elbow. Set one end of it over your FT-817 speaker, then rotate the elbow to

Right! Actually I stumbled on your page earlier and downloaded the whole thing intending to put it forever onto a CD I'm making of all my FT-817 reference material. So now I see how the attenuator

Re: Palomar Amplifier
Palomar is a long-time manufacture of illegal (in the US) CB
amplifiers, echo boxes, VFO's, etc. so they probably aren't looking
much beyond that market. It's amazing to me that they've been able

Re: check out this web page for radio bracket
I love my Z-11 also. Great tuner. I never use autotune on the Z-11 because
it isn't invoked until the VSWR exceeds 3:1 and I'm a bit compulsive about
getting as much power moving in the forward

Re: Front/Rear Antenna Connection
This is about as much as my Wilderness SST draws in TOTAL on receive.
I guess that's progress!
OK OK - I'm only jealous.

Re: Palomar Amplifier
Thanks. Any idea how much current drain? I would love to get more RF out but
would like to limit total current to about 7A ( 2 for the radio and 5 for
the amplifier??? )
If it is truly linear maybe

Re: Front/Rear Antenna Connection
Yes Randy, there is about 10ma more current draw when
using the rear connector. The relay needs to be held
closed for the rear connector(not a latching relay).

Re: Front/Rear Antenna Connection
Yes, approximately 20-30 mA, as a result of the current needed for the
non-latching relay used for the rear ant connector.

Front/Rear Antenna Connection
Is there a difference in the 817's current consumption between
selection of front or rear antenna?

I have one of the Z11's and I love it. Sometimes, though, it won't
autotune, and I have to manually hit the "tune" button.
Other than that little quirk (which I find to be no problem) it's a

Re: High SWR on 6m...
More importantly, remember that the "SWR Meter" on the '817 isn't
exactly what you'd call a 'calibrated' beast! ;) I.e., 4 bars
doesn't really tell you too much, other than the VSWR is higher for

Re: New Maldol Mono Band Whip's.
Not sure what you mean by, "New". Do they really have something "New" out or
have you just discovered the Maldol whips that have been on the market for
several months? I'm going to assume the latter.
