Re: Built-in Attenuator
OK, here's the deal: Unlike FM, SSB has no threshold where the signal
"drops out"; you can add more and more gain to the receiver (or more
and more antenna capture area) to bring up any signal that

Walking & Talking FT-817 HF???
It seems Yaesu designed the FT-817 to be used
for VHF/UHF transceive in the over-the-shoulder
walking mode. Hence the BNC on the face pointing
upwards, compatible with VHF/UHF duckies.
There is no

Re: Built-in Attenuator
It sounds like an atennuator <sp?> performs similar to
DSP, except not on quite the sophisticated digital
level.
My No-Code Tech mentality leads me to think that
atennuator is related to the antenna

Re: Was this an FT817 group ?
Don't be sorry, de John. This is an FT-817 group. The 817 is a low power
radio. I like the info from the discussions about QRP. Helps me decide if
I want to go in that direction, whatever. If you

Re: Built-in Attenuator
OK...now I'm gonna let my ignorance REALLY shine!!!
Why would I want to "reduce" the strength of a signal?
Seems counter-productive...is it possibly for
overloading the front end or dampering

Lets see... an "attenuator" reduces the strength of a signal and an
"antenna tuner" will tune for a good SWR.
I believe that's how the two differ.

5watts vs 20 watts
Well I did like my several FT-7's as 20 mobile rigs (more or less 20 pep) was enough to usually make the same qso's on SSB mobile as the 100 w rig. On CW 5 watts will be plenty.
I am waiting for

Bonnie, you and I have conversed before on more than one occasion and I respect your opinion, but my statement about the Yaesu being more than 6db better than the SG-2020 is based on in-the-field

Built-in Attenuator
Texas Towers is advertising the 817 w/ a built-in attenuator.
How does this differ from a built-in antenna tuner?

Feeling at least partially responsible for this thread I feel that I

First of all, there IS a difference between having to QSO and
wanting to QSO. Bonnie, you touched on this
