Hi Jacques,
It looks like you did indeed mean 5 kHz and not 5 Hz.
Check MENU #30 and make sure it is on 5 kHz.
Check to make sure that FST is not set (check for the running man on the
display).

Re: ATX query -- anyone tried it with the MP-1 radial kit?

I'm certainly not happier with it. I think most people have had to
jump through hoops to get the thing to work. I posted a question
about it on the Elecraft list today and three replies came back
saying I should try longer radials. I doubt if many people have done
A/B comparisons between the MP-1 and the ATX. I've certainly never
heard signals stronger on the MP-1 than the ATX, but perhaps if I
could get the thing reasonably matched to 50 ohms I would.

Re: USER REPORT: DX, ANTENNAS (MP-1), ETC!!! Long Post...

Well, I spent USD 225 on the MP-1, 80m coil, tripod and telescopic
whip, plus about 40 quid on VAT and duty when it arrived, and I can't
use the thing at all. So I'm even more fed up.

Even without a counterpoise, the ATX works well enough for casual
listening around on the bands, which the FT-817 is handy for. It fits
handily on to the radio without needing a stand. It loads up with a
decent SWR on 10m - 17m using a 5m steel measuring tape I bought for
4 quid in the local hardware store. I can get a respectable SWR on
40m using the end-loaded wire counterpoise I made up, though I can't
say I've made any contacts on that band. I'm still having problems
with 20m though.

So I'm happier with the ATX than I am with the MP-1. Since the
antenna supplied by Yaesu isn't even any use for HF listening, it's
probably worth having for that reason alone.

But a dipole up even a few feet would probably work better. On the
Elecraft list there was a report today from a guy who made his first
contact with the K1 he built using a dipole laying on the ground. Who
knows whether an ATX or MP-1 works better than a dipole at ground
level? :-)

was RE: Re: Wh Prfrms Btr: ATX/MP-1? now indoor Portable & cw

In response to the high-rise dweller query.

One night while cooking dinner and playing radio at the same time,
I found that sitting the rig on top of the refrigerator seemed
to really help. My QTH is in California MO and I worked a station
in the state of California. 59 both ways on 10M. You could hear
his jaw drop when I told him I was portable in the kitchen with
5 watts and a whip.

I am using the RS back of the set antenna with the two different
whips. I have no problem using it down to 20M. Most bands
no counterpoise is necessary. On 20M I find a resonant counterpoise
attached to the ground screw to be very beneficial.

I am fairly new with CW but have been working on getting comfortable
with the mode and increasing my speed. Last week at lunch I heard
a special event station from the Texas Star Party. I was having
no luck calling him on phone so I switched to CW and we continued
with him on SSB and me on CW. (One time I was glad for the 817's
lack of CW filter.) At the time I was also showing off ham radio
to a fellow technical co-worker.

The thing I love about CW is that it gets through with a minimum
of equipment. What lit my fire was as a tech I had been calling
CQ on 6M USB with no luck. The band was quiet. So just for grins
I threw out a CW CQ and lo and behold a station from Nebraska came
back to me. They were Q5 and weren't even moving the needle.

Anyway enough for now.

Hope to hear you all on the air, be it on phone, CW or psk31.

FT-817 Accessories in Japan

Well, I just couldn't resist when HRO dropped the price of the FT-817
to $639 at Dayton...I'm the proud owner of one the beasties now. Very
nice little rig.

All the vendors at Dayton were out of the accessories (CAT-62, CW
Filters, et cetera) on Sunday...

I'll be visiting Japan soon on business and will have 3-4 days to
myself. Checking out the ham shops in Akihabara is on my "must do"
list as of now.

Does anyone know if ham accessories are any cheaper there? How about
stuff like the Maldol antenna? I've been told that rigs are about the
same or a little more expensive.

Yes, this sounds interesting. I am increasingly coming to the opinion
that instead of spending $100's on compact whip antennas, we would
all be better off looking for an equally small lightweight telescopic
mast and spend $5 on a couple of bits of wire. Only those who insist
on being able to walk around while transmitting would find that
solution impractical. Those who can operate from forests won't even
need the mast...

What actually works very well is a 44 ft doublet fed with open wire

direction.
I use one of these made out of 22 AWG wire along with a DK9SQ mast
and an
LDG QRP autotuner as my vacation setup and it works like a charm.
It is also
possible to operate 80 meters by shorting the ends of the ribbon
cable and
working it against a counterpoise. You may need to play with the
length of
the feedline to get a good match on all bands (80ft reportedly
works well).

The Norcal Doublet was essentially the same thing except the whole
antenna
feedline and all is made from computer ribbon cable (very light).

L.B. Cebik, W4RNL has some more information on this antenna on his

Re: Dayton 817 Goodies

Regarding Harry's question about the price of the hand mike I bought at
Dayton for my 817:

I just checked my charge card invoice which was $111.00. This included the
HMM-Y hand mike and the separate adapter cable between the standard Yaesu
connector and the modular plug on the 817 plus OHIO State Sales Tax which I
believe was 6.5%. Since I only have the total, I don't know exactly what
the component prices were. I think the mike alone is in the $79 range.

Hope this helps,

W4RT Electronics ONE TOUCH TUNE - Really neat device. Small, light,
super low battery consumption. I just wrote a review of this and
posted on the eham.net website under the QRP ACCESSORIES section of
Product Reviews. I'd invite others who bought the OTT at Dayton to
add reviews of their own. Lots of data and pricing on the W4RT
Electronics website: www.w4rt.com

Heil HM-1 Hand Mike and RJ-45 Adapter - I have had outstanding
results with my Heil HM-10 Dual on my Yaesu FT-1000D. The HC-4
cartridge really seems to cut thru the QRM and help in DX pileups.
The Hand Mike features the HC-4 cartridge plus a broader cartridge
similar to the HC-5, switch selectable. The Yaesu adapter cable sold
by Heil makes this a plug and play situation with the 817. Initial
results seem quite favorable but I need more experience to be sure.
Although the mike is a bit larger than the Yaesu mike, it is very
lightweight, probably lighter than the stock mike.

FT-817 Pack-It Reference - This little yellow book is a jewel. Very
easy for aging eyes to read but smaller than the stock Yaesu manual.
The index is outstanding and makes honing in on the subject of
interest an easy task. You can bet this one will be in my pack on my
next field outing with my 817. The author's prior experience in
writing similar manuals for other Yaesu products really shows.
