No, it neaver succeded. I check antenna connectio tryng wit a different one (2m/70/23cm vertical) and the problem remain.
Some days it work at full power, other days it work bad with the two antennas...

Re: Power output instable

Pietro,
Does your display flash HSWR by any chance?? My 818 would do this from time to time.? I thought something was wrong with feedline, antenna or something else.? I examined everything.? As a last resort, I restored factory defaults and the problem went away.? It seems that software became corrupt due to a power connector and the outcome was the radio software misinterpreting the output power and SWR.? When the SWR becomes high (as sensed internally) the radio output is reduced.? Save your settings and memory (use CHIRP or some other software for memory) and reset to factory defaults.

Ok. Let's see if anyone can give me a tip on where to look for my FT818.
I have a strange behavior on the 2 meter band, the output power (indicated by the display) is not constant when pressing the PTT.
Sometimes it reads 100%, sometimes 30%, sometimes 0. And actually the output power is different, it's not just the display. The SWR is slightly higher at low power, but not significantly.
It's not the antenna: I tried two, and one is a 70cm/2m dual band and on 70cm everything works great. It happens with any mode on 2m and on all other bands everything works.
I suspect a relay, but any tips on what to check would be appreciated.

When I 1st got my FT-817 back in 2002, I was senior? field engineer for a global computer company in New England. I used to drive a Ford Escort hatchback, manual transmission. All though Rush Limbaugh was on the radio, you can't take 5 days in a row, as he repeates himself.

So having just received the FT-817 for Christmas, I decided that I could at least listen to HF while mobiling between clients. Some calls were 2-3 hours apart.? I added a ball mount by the left tail light and a ham stick for 40 meters.? The rig would sit between the bucket seats next to the? VW type emergency brake, right by my right thigh..

The hamstick was tuned to 7263kc. - ECARS - East Cars daily net. and Off I went... The rig was easy enough to throw in the trunk for safe keeping when in areas of New England, not so nice..

During the year, On ECARS I could always check in with net control usually in Pennsylvania and I in New Hampshire. I had buddies I could contact back in Virginia as I used to live there for a while. I later at a hamfest bought a 20M hamstick used for $10 and tried 20 meters.. one thing about New England Mobile- changing antennas -changing bands was a pain in the @$$ as roads are narrow, distances are limited and well pick a band and operate or just listen.. On 20 meters best DX was South Africa...
?
After 9 months or so the clutch finally went on that Ford escort at about 160K and so did the mobile operation as I moved to a new 4X4 Chevy Tracker, FT-100 and a Hi-Q antenna mounted at the back of the externally mounted spare tire. Wish I still had that setup. that 4X4 would get 30mpg, and during 50K warranty, never went back to the dealer.. ?
?
So mobile operation with a FT-817 can be accomplished, the only reason I went to the FT-100 was face plate separation and of course the Hi-Q all band antenna..??
?
My current mobile set up is a ICOM 7000 with a HA-4 remote tuner and I use a single 40M hustler for all band coverage... Even 6 meters...I've been using that 10 years now..

5 watts mobile is not impossible..? so the guy gives you a 5x5 instead of a 5x9... doesn't bother my ego...? Many time just listening is a thrill...

QRP is a compromise/challenging way to operate.

Mobile HF antennas are severe compromises.

QRP into mobile HF antenna in a vehicle in motion is compromise^2.

Parking a car and operating QRP with an antenna not attached to the vehicle isn't what I was thinking when I asked about QRP mobile, but I'll concede it's an undefined term.

I'm not saying it's horrible or unenjoyable, just not really
suited for some use cases of my concern. Anyhoo there are plenty
of aftermarket supports for the 705 for some reason. Activations
in civilizated places should be OK (POTA, BOTA or so). Activating
from the wild as an far away SOTA, not as much.

Re: Digital input sensitivity

Agree with Marco. Variable levels per mode.
The original poster, Pietro, referred to VHF as a band, and I phrased my answer to basically say "It will do what you want it to do between HF and VHF"
Mode-based levels have come in handy for me on both my 817nd and my 897d. DIG level on HF ssb, PKT level on VHF/UHF pkt pkt9600 mostly.

Re: Digital input sensitivity

The dig input level is the same for all band and is controlled by DIG MIC setting (menu #25).

I double checked with the internal memory map and it appear to have just one memory position for the each mic level by mode (ssb, am, fm, dig, pkt, pkt9600) so there's no way to have different level per band.

Re: FT-817 Replacement

Mounting an FT817 is so easy it's hardly worth mentioning. Just use one or both cover screws located in four positions on the radio sides attached to angle brackets. Hardware stores carry angle braces which might need to be drilled, and you might need longer cover screws, but that's it.
