FT-818ND with accessorys and collins YF-122CN 455KHZ-300hz Filter for Sale

Guy Mengel N1GMM

Good evening from rural Virginia.
I am an older ham recovering from 2 strokes. This is my 3rd Yaesu. First 2 were 817NDs.
I will not be able to take this unit to parks and hike anymore. So I thought I would try using it
at home as a base station. Well, that did not go anywhere. It is tested, never used on or transmitted on.
I will sell the radio, filter and all accessories below at below, less than what I paid for them. Including the filter which now goes for many more dollars than I paid. I, as a ham amd not interested in making money, I would love to see this unit USED and not just sitting. The prices of filters are beyond reason.

First, what it cost me (minus the taxes) I have original receipts for all. Most bought from HRO 10/8/2020
1. FT818 $609.95
2. YF-122CN 300 Hz Bandwidth Collins 455 kHz IF CW Narrow Filter for FT-817/818 FT-857 etc.. $169.95 (it is installed)
3. Z-817 LDG autotuner $104.95
4. 817 / 818 -ESG Portable Zero escort stand OD green, aluminum $74
5. CatDisplay from Christopher Day using Cat cable. $148 (did not come with cable).

Includes Windcamp 817S Battery that goes in unit. Includes Charger (I just charged it yesterday and tested it) works fine
Original batteries and original cover in box with all other items including antennas, battery (probably ok but easy to replace) manual, nifty guide.
Total cost to me (+) = $1106.85 2 years ago.

Cost to you (maybe less if you are a new ham. proof necessary). Will sell only as a bundle. Will not break it apart.

$675 + 15$ shipping. Total $690
As is: will not accept returns.
Zelle, or Postal Money order.
Double Boxed and insured

Email me at guy at eastroad dot org
I will share my phone # and answer questions if needed.
Some Pictures here:

I will send other pictures if requested. All is pristine.

PS.. I build most of my own equipment and repair radios for others too. For many years now
Recovering some funds for heath reasons.

Re: 60dbm Neptune Amplifier + or -

Hi Anaxi,

Well that explains why the manufacturer has suggested the FW update. At least you can take comfort that it's probably not the radio. I'm watching with interest.?

I looked on the 60dBm website for a technical manual for the amplifier but could not find anything. Do you know if there is such a thing?

I guess your comments are aligned with what maker is trying to conclude.

Re: Ft-817 power connector

There's nothing holding anyone back from using a bigger box instead of the supplied one. The designer was going for compactness and possibly reduced price. There's a plethora of choices on the web. That way there's room for a positive disconnect switch too.

Hi Mike,
The adapter on ebay is already made or printed out and assembled. You don't have to make it. No printer needed.

Mike,
As a side note, if you ever again come across a situation where the LM317 will not support the current draw that you need, you may look at its big brother, the LM383. It has the same form, fit, and function as the 317 but will support up to 5A continuous.

Re: 60dbm Neptune Amplifier + or -

Hi all,

The 817/818 is a very reliable radio when it comes to external keying and one of you has confirmed the same behaviour when using a different radio. From the descriptions it sounds like RF getting into the wrong places in the amplifier. This could be RF radiated?inside the enclosure from the PA. Could be RF getting onto?the external PTT line, could be RF getting into the supply of logic and switching circuits.

Anaxi said he is waiting for a FW update - that's a strange troubleshooting approach but maybe it has something to do with the RF sensing circuit.?

I would terminate the amplifier into a dummy load, make up a very short PTT cable (ground centre pin for TX) then try to TX from your radio with the lowest power possible - CW or FM is most convenient for testing. The point of doing this is to exclude the PTT cable as a possible cause. I couldn't find a manual but it looks like the amp has some kind of auto band select. Can you manually select the correct?band rather than relying on the RF sense?

I would use a 'scope to look for RF in places it shouldn't be such as the logic and switching circuits of the amplifier. Be prepared to put some 10 nano or even 100 nano capacitors to ground in areas where you think there should not be RF. This is not a 3 minute task, and requires persistence.

Hi Steve,

The issue I'm having seems to be different, but close attention to your reply makes me wanting to expend some euros on a dummy load for further debug this.

Meanwhile, I also engaged with Neptune crew (Pawel) and I'm preparing to follow his suggestion on firmware upgrade.

I picked up a second 817 for $100. It was beat up but I got it working. There is a problem with the power jack, it's busted, and it took nearly two months before Yaesu had the part back in stock.
