Belated website of Aussy h/held tcvr

www.qmac.com thats it lads & lasses the website for the hheld brick
transceiver I mentioned previousy (Could I hell remember the site) I
just typed in search for "Australia 50w military" and there it was
happy viewing. very robust but not totally qrp (up to 50w) but small
have a look at the portable ant products they have tunable portables
which will suit all you back-packers for the 817.

FT-817 Seen in San Antonio Ham Store

Worked someone on 17M who said they worked in a ham store in the San Antionio TX area and that the Yaesu had come by to show sample of the FT-817 and had possibly left on in the store as a demo. Sounds like it won't be too long till they are available here. He said no firm price had been mentioned but he heard about $800.

By the way for the one of you who do travel a lot, and plan to use the
817 for this purpose. I have been using with quite a bit of good luck a
Barker and Williamson purchased used at a ham fest. It is advertised as a
window antenna, and comes with a whip, coils for 40 to 10 metre, and a
counterpoise, and it is super easy to transport and set up. . It is not a
KT34XA but will get you signal out fairly well indeed. The price of
around 90$ is a bit high but during hamfest I have seen them very low, I
got mine for 20$ in mint condition.

HF whip -- military design?

Anybody aware of _good_ whip antenna design for portable HF operation?

The military market used about 15 feet of center-loaded whip -- both
on the Huges AN/PRC-74 manpack (US) and on RACAL equipment (UK). Both
had miserable efficiency -- but still much better than no antenna at
all.

5->100W linear amp (Was: Digest Number 18)

Isnt there someone out there who knows of a say 50w
all band/mode linear driven by 1-5 watts for variable output ?
There's a neat, 50W design in the current ARRL handbook. It uses two
commodity (read: dirt cheap) MOSFETs at 24V/4A for 50W PEP off 2W in.

eBay usually lists 100W linears at $100 or so. The design is similar
to Motorola application notes; the box looks like a very short
production runs by no-name brands, targeting illegal CBers (5W AM/SSB
input).

BUYERS BEWARE -- you probably need a low pass filter to bring
harmonic
emissions down to US legal level (-40dBc?).
