Re: 2SK2973 drivers

Those particular driver FET's ae easy to replace. They are surface-mount, but they are SOT-89 cases. Just use some solder wick and the edge of an X-Acto knife to pry the part loose while heating the soldered pins.

The FT-817 uses 2SK2975 FET's as the main power output devices. THOSE are quite a bit more difficult to replace, as they are soldered underneath the device. Probably requires a small heat gun to remove a bad device and solder in a new one. The FT-857 and FT-897 put out a lot more power, so those use the 2SK2975 as the drivers and the 2SK2973 as pre-drivers.

I also discovered the audio output is very weak, so this radio has multiple issues. Still waiting on the drivers, then I'll scope out the audio problem.

Not excited that it uses a surface mount audio output that is packed in tight. Not ordering any more parts until I confirm where the audio problem is at.

Re: Unable to skip memory channel in scan

your manual is only ten years old?

Oh, you have one of the 'modern ones'?
Or a replacement?

Mine is more than 20 years old, as my FT-817 (non ND!) is.?

Hi Hi , and having a good time with your FT-817, one of the most versatile TRX in the world! I

only use my FT-991, when QRP will not work!
And QRP will work for 80% what I do, on HAM-radio. My antennas are the best 'amplifier' I have!
More then the 600W out of my old darling, my FL-2100Z.

But in conjunction, it's an adorable and excellent 'trio', antenna, PA, and my FT-991.

But why use it, if it is not nessecary? In CW and 'digital mode' 5W are most of the times enough, ... most of the times ... !
Normaly, no need for 100W, or even more ... (+600W)

My FT-817 was a 'Eier-legende-Woll-Milch-Sau', when it appeared in 2000, like we in DL say, ... !?
(egg laying, wool giving, milk spending kind of a pig, ... !)?

Re: Unable to skip memory channel in scan

You've got "Supply Voltage Display" on (page 18 in the 817nd manual).
The setting?is in the CHG, VLT, DSP row of the display selections.
Press the F key, turn the SEL knob to the "CHG, VLT, DSP" choice, and press the B key to turn VLT off.

Not at all clear in the 10 year old manual.? I'd seen it before, but it's been a long time.? Hope this helps!

[Edited Message Follows]

I am reading the manual for the FT-817 to skip a memory channel from my scan, but there is one issue with it: The channel number, as described, is not showing, only the current input voltage. Therefore, I cannot change between the dot and the hyphen as described in the manual:

Scan Skip Programming (Memory Mode Only)

Among the memories you have programmed, there may be some stations which you do not
wish to scan. For example, broadcast signals (which are transmitted continuously) will cause
the scanner to stop, and such channels may be skipped so as to avoid this inconvenience.
To remove a channel from the scanning loop:
1. Press the key momentarily, then rotate the knob, as needed, until Operating
Function Row 2 [MW, MC, TAG] appears on the display.
2. Recall the memory channel to be skipped.
3. Press the (MC) key momentarily. The "hyphen" in the
memory channel number will change to become a "dot"; this
shows that this channel now is not included in the scanning loop.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 as many times as necessary to skip all the
channels you do not wish to scan.
5. Initiate memory scanning; you will observe that the channels
you marked to be skipped are not included in the scanning loop.
6. Press the PTT switch to stop the scan; you may now use the knob to step through
the channels manually - one at a time - and you will observe that the "Skipped" channels
are, nonetheless, available for recall by manual means.
7. You may restore a previously-skipped channel to the scanning loop by selecting the
channel manually, then pressing the (MC) key momentarily so that the "dot" changes
to become a "hyphen."

Menu #34 is been changed between ON and OFF, but no change.

Thanks for your suggestion Ken, I will consider those options if no one wants the battery pack.

Another alternative might be that the printed manual can probably be ordered from Yaesu as a 'replacement part.'

Good?morning to the group,

I purchased a new FT 818nd from Wimo in Germany in January of this year and have no interest in using the original rechargeable battery that is included with the radio. I would like to trade it for an English language copy of the 818ND Manuel as the one included is in German, yes I have downloaded a copy but I'd like to have a paper copy. Anyone interested in doing this trade, let me know, the battery is brand new and still in bubble?wrap. Thanks!

Agree on HR SW for windows, but MS is not open source either. As a matter of fact, some of the core Apple software (Darwin) is open source.?

But none of that matters. A platform that runs the software one needs reliably does.?

Re: QRP Talk on RSGB Tonight@8

Hi Anthony,?I watched it live and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for an excellent presentation.

I started as a QPR CW only operator and have recently obtained an used FT817. I knew CW goes with QRP very well however I am stunned how far one can get to with SSB? at 5W. I currently use one of the worst antennas one can possibly imagine. It is a 4ft long telescopic whip from ebay, originally made for CB 27MHz. I have rewound the loading coil to match 15m band, fitted that directly to FT817 rear antenna port, added a short counterpoise wire and am consistently reaching most of the Europe with 55-57 reports. Even, when operating indoors with radio on the kitchen table. Great fun really :)

Steve,
? it appears the board is actually burned also. Hopefully?
you can remove the damaged parts. Take a look at this article to adjust the bias current.?

I replaced these FET's in my FT857D. I got four of them from RF Parts. I did not bother to match them. The rig works fine now.

So... rather than order 4 from RF Parts for $35 with shipping, I ordered 50 from Amazon for $40 with shipping... 2 to 4 weeks.?

How important is it that these be matched? I'll have 50 to sort through, if need be.

My plan is to return it to factory settings before replacing anything. The PCB is a bit burned, but the traces there are pretty short so I'm hoping it doesn't mess with the RF alignment too much.
