Re: FT-817 almost powers up
with power plugged in ? --- yes.
If I remove the power and use the battery, the voltage readings seem correct. In the original post I was measuring from the 817 case to the 13.8 line on the main board and getting 0v (because relative to the DC barrel, they are both 13.8? --? same potential) b |

Hi Anthony;? No way was I able to log into the 2nd week of Zoom; first week, no problem.? It kept asking me for the password which I understood as "WEDNESDAY".? But I will plan on watching it on YouTube. 73, Karl, KO8S in Michigan

Re: FT-817 almost powers up
b, Is the VOM reading with the power connector plugged into the FT817. If you do then I would think the connector has lost it's connection to the FT817 ground/neg supply connection.? If not in the FT817 then I would be concerned if the cable connections are reversed and the fT817 has another path to ground.

Hello Bill I do not have a circuit (schematic) for the 817 here but I do know that the much earlier FT290 and FT690 had a reverse polarity diode in the negative pole of the DC power connector. If the FT817 is similar, I would investigate the health of that, or any other, reverse polarity protection circuit / device. FT-817 almost powers up
I have a 817 I am working on that I picked up at a flea.
I probed around the power connector and it seems ok I also checked the MAIN board top and bottom and I don't see any craters. On battery, when I power up I seem to get a good 5V at the display before it shuts off. b |
Re: Chinese FT-817 TCXO?
James,
Thanks For The Information, Nice low cost Method.? Checked My Two FT-817 and I am Happy That The 4 year old China TCXO are Still in Specification, On the Other Hand the recently "Purchased " FT-817 with? NO TCXO (standard factory) is 197HZ OFF, I Did Order a TCXO for it from Ali as it was the best? cost/shipping compromise. Best Regards. Steve AB2ET/4 |
Re: Any reviews?
I found the build video. Looks like a decent kit. I think I'll go for it and get one. Thanx for all the replies and suggestions. Dan KD3CEU

Re: Chinese FT-817 TCXO?
Easy way is to use WWV 10 or 15 mhz and tune down 1500 hz on LSB. That should make an audio tone with the radio tuned LSB to 9998500 (10 mhz) results at 1500 hz. Use one of many computer programs to measure the audio tones exact frequency.? While you might get a hertz or so variation due to the E propagation layer changing height, it should be "close enough".
Would probably be worth while to move to USB and tune to 10001500 to verify the results. Jim/VEZ |

Re: Chinese FT-817 TCXO?
Hi Ronan, Thanks for your input and excellent suggestions, sounds like you are a member of a great club, I will see what the local clubs offer. I know that the ARRL has a frequency test night once a year, so that's an option also. Vy73, Rick VE1RNM? So my question is how are you checking the frequency deviation of the Chinese tcxo-9s other than using another rig as a baseline.Fortunately, my local radio club (CPSARC) run a "radio check" night where you can bring along your radios and have them tested for frequency accuracy, output purity and Rx sensitivity. They use some VERY nice and, more importantly, calibrated test equipment.? Check if your local club do the same. |

Sorry for the brain fart...Oh, one of these. One important thing to keep in mind about them is that they use transistors designed for use in switching-mode power supplies rather than "true" RF ones (hardly surprising given the price tag!), so while overall this kit performs decently enough do not expect wonders as you move up in the frequency. And as Dave has already remarked, you WILL need good low-pass filtering on the output. -- Marek M0JUR |
