Re: Low output power only on CW...

Good question, Al... The power remains the same with the filter engaged or disengaged.?
I might remove the filter completely from the radio and see if that changes anything. That requires a bit of surgery though so it'll probably have to wait till nearer the weekend.

Re: Low output power only on CW...

Ronan,
Do you get normal power when the narrow filter option is disabled?

Low output power only on CW...

Hi.?
I have an FT817ND that puts out a full 5 watts in all modes except CW, which is a bit puzzling. I'm measuring the power on an AV-600 with a dummy load attached. In CW mode, the radio only puts out between 2 and 3 watts while running on an external 13.8v power supply. It's entirely possible that this may be pilot error but I have reset the radio and the issue persists.

The radio does have a Sotabeams "laserbeam" filter fitted which kicks in when the narrow filter option is selected. I have removed and re-fitted the filter in case there were any wiring issues but, again, no change.

Has anyone had similar with their radio?? Any pointers or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Cheers,
Ronan MM0IVR?

Re: buttons don't work

I had a similar situation. I couldn¡¯t get the buttons to work.

?

I took 91% alcohol and applied it to Q-tips. And cleaned all around the buttons, let it dry and repeated. After, the second cleaning it worked. You do have to keep pressing the buttons., It worked for me, but you may have another fault.

Good luck

Well - my 10 year 817 may have bitten the dust. Most of the buttons don't work. It powers on but is stuck on 446mhz. the selection knob changes the frequency in the 440 band but that's it. I condany ucted several resets but no improvement. Any ideas? Earl N7OOS

Re: Wanted: YF-122-C CW Filter

As a Long Time FT-817 Owner Of Two Thai I use Periodically I find it a bit strange That Yaesu Has Not Found Or Even Produced a Equivalent Since They are Still Producing the FT-818, or Have They Resigned the FT-817/818 to the Orphans Radio Fate, A Dusty Shelf.? I feel For The resent FT-818 Buyers As They now are thinking That a IC-705 Would have been in the Long Term a Better But Costlier Choice.
Best Regards.

Re: Wanted: YF-122-C CW Filter

I have the following Collins Mechanical Filters unopened in their ant-static envelope.??I purchased these for my Yaesu radios (857 & 817) but have since moved on to SDR radios where 'filtering' is handled in software etc.

Any one interested, message me.

Re: Wanted: YF-122-C CW Filter

When Collins stopped making their good mechanical filters the source really dried up after the last batch was sold.? I got one of the last 300 Hz filters for my FT817.? It is a must, IMHO, for CW, reduces noise and also of course narrows the receiver for crowded activity.? I also have on in my Collins 75S3 rcvr.

Only option left is to buy a used 817 with CW filter in place, then unload your bare 817

The Collins mechanical filter they are based on is long out of production. Last I checked Yaesu also showed them as obsolete and Inrad said no longer available.? If you can't find them used, you won't.? I bought one a year ago from a guy in Russia.? Probably not an option now ;-)

Re: FT-817ND High VSWR on 2 metre band

Actually I can confirm the issue on 2 meters 6 years ago when I first got licensed on my brandy new ft817n.? I had the same issue when first trying out a 2m dipole purchased on line.? I gave up on 2 meters at that point? Calked it up to me being a new Technician noob. From there I moved up and down to 70cm and 6 meters with no issues.

Now that I am a bit more savvy, upgraded to General and have more time under my belt.? I will test the antenna with my nanovna and again with my radio and get back to the group.? Could be my antenna, or not.

G¡¯day all,
I have been a reader and lurker in this group for a while and this is my debut post!

After a good few years of use and abuse my 817 has decided to give me a high VSWR reading on the 2m band.?

I have searched through the group posts for ideas and tried a few suggestions including a full reset to no avail.?

I have tried the rig on both front and rear antenna jacks and on 3 different antennas (all dual/tri band and all work fine on 70cm and 6m) with the same result.
It is not only indicating a high VSWR on the meter (occasionally displays text ¡°high VSWR¡±) but is folding back the tx power so I can¡¯t even trigger the local (60 over 9 normally) repeater.
When I did the reset I did disconnect all power and battery prior to the reset (home+power) as this was one of the suggestions I found.?

Does anyone have an insight into the problem?
Any quick fixes?
Any pointers on where to start trouble shooting?? I had a quick read of the circuit description and have one area to check which is the 2 diodes off the directional coupler for 2M as it seems to be the only point that is not common to the other bands. Any thoughts?

I have not had time to rip the covers off yet so have not done any actual testing under the bonnet so to speak.
Oh and just to be clear it still receives as well as always on 2M on all antennas tested.
I am seeking the technical wisdom of the 817 hive to guide me
