Re: My FT-817 died :-(

Even without the battery pack, the power remains low. On HF, no power
comes out (according to the FT-817's power bars: 0 bars!). On the other hand, my power supply shows about 1 A current. Rene PD1ALD --- In FT817@y..., w4wb@a... wrote: Rene,well, you may have a battery problem. Maybe overly discharged.VHF and UHF. All other freqs: no show.ratings |

Rene,
If you have an internal batery pack installed, try disconnecting it from the 817 and run with the 13.8 V DC supply only. If all is well, you may have a battery problem. Maybe overly discharged. I had a similar problem when the internal rechareable battery voltage dropped too low. Extenal 12 V was OK. Recharged the internal battery and the power was OK... My FT-817 died :-(
pd1ald@planet.nl
Tonight, my FT-817 died...
RX on all bands is OK. All used antennas were ok. Now, suddenly, there is only between 0.5 and 1 Watt coming out of it, only on VHF and UHF. All other freqs: no show. What could be the problem? I've tried the resets POWER+F+V/M, POWER+HOME, POWER+F, POWER+V/M. I've looked into the alignment menu to see if there were any ratings at '0', but it looks quite normal, compared to what I've seen in some postings here (I never went into the alignment menu myself). I did not do any modification on the rig. Appreciate any help, Rene PD1ALD |

Re: QRP Autotuner
Cortland
FWIW, I just got one (assembled) on Ebay. However, it seems not to
like more than about 1 watt or so in my car, as it never stops on teh low SWR but continues to retune at 2.5 or 5 watts. Works OK manually. This may be RF feedback, and I am investigating it. Hope to fix it, as it will make Field Day a bit easier. One thing about this particular model is, the relays draw current all the time while energized (the Z-11 uses latching relays), and from a message I se in the FT-817 (note the dash) group, it may draw 40 ma or so while in use after it's tuned. So allow for that in your power budget. Gents and Ladies...
I'd like to respond to this particular chain of messages... The Miracle Whip performs as we describe. I invite you to read in detail on our website at www.miracleantenna.com - in particular the FAQs - for more information. Yes, the Miracle Whip is a 50-inch whip and will definitely NOT outperform or even match the performance of a much bigger antenna - but then a much bigger antenna is much less convenient for traveling and operating under casual conditions. We've not as yet seen another antenna offered for the 817 that incorporates HF, VHF and UHF in a single, rig-mounted unit with tuner incorporated. The Miracle Whip is designed for the operator who would like to be able to operate conveniently, without having to suffer the weight and set-up time of a larger antenna and tuner, and would like VHF-UHF included in the package. We have worked DX under good conditions repeatedly with a Miracle Whip and the 817 on 20, 17, 15, and 10 meters on SSB, CW and FM. In short - if you'd like something to take the rig into the living room, out to the patio, camping for the weekend, over to a friends place for the afternoon, traveling on business, etc, the Miracle Whip is a convenient, highly transportable system for getting the most portablility out of your rig with the minimum of fuss. If you're more concerned with performance, and less with weight, size, set-up and convenience, a larger antenna would be a better choice. If you want a single antenna that allows you to operate HF and VHF-UHF, and get very good performance CONSIDERING ITS SIZE AND CONVENIENCE, we believe you would enjoy using a Miracle Whip. Thank you for allowing this comment. Robert Victor for Miracle Antenna |

plan to "walk about" foot mobile, bike mobile or other pedestrian mobile, you probably don't need any of these portable whip antennas. If your going portable, but fixed operation there are numerous other antennas that work significantly better and in most cases, cheaper. Anything from Hustler type mobile antennas, to wire dipoles, to 1/4 wavelength verticals. The rule of thumb is that the more capture area, the better the performance of an antenna. ----- Original Message -----

with too much moneyOh that will happen... and it will prob sell too! Anyone with a small whip and the ZM-2 can try something close. I have a tele-whip with a BNC ( from a scanner ) which I've use directly on the ZM-2... matter of fact it was my travel antenna for hotels before the PW-1. ((btw, doesn't MFJ sell something like that, a tuner with a direct mounted whip??)) Anyway, the whip and ZM-2 does work. It takes very good band conditions and a good ear on the other end. But then I've almost done WAS on 250mW too. It depends on how you want to play the game. Regarding cases (covers) for the FT-817, by reading prior posts you'll see that many fellow Ft-817 owners have offered suggestions any where from metal camera cases to women's bags. I my self have discovered the student lunch pack, heavily insulated/padded, 6 compartments and holds all my 817 accessories including tuner, batteries, antenna, manual, mic, etc. I paid $ 7.00 USD for mine. I have seen cases list for as much as $75.00 USD. Look around, try the alternative. ----- Original Message -----

Miracle Whip Discussion
<snip>
Therefore, in a mood of generosity, one could reasonably concludenot pertinent to the FT817 discussion, especially at a time when there is a considerable influx of new users, then what is?
Frank, Your points are well made. One role of this Group is served by discussing antennas potentially useful to use with the FT-817. There are many interesting ideas floating around. Many show up for discussion in such groups as AntenneX (). In no way do it think this offering is a joke. To the contrary, I have the feeling they are serious and believe they have developed something special. This is based upon an off-list communication. Since the basic antenna design is reportedly going to be presented in an article in the July QST, we should have a better idea if this is a viable antenna or not after reading the article. Perhaps QST will show up later this week. For my part, I have low expectations for this being a miracle Miracle Whip, but more likely another short, base-loaded whip that radiates, at best, very modestly. Note that they don't recommend a countrpoise except in the comm to me, and he said that a ground on 160 and 80 m may be of benefit. Oh my! Rationale discussion is encouraged, but rudness is to be avoided. 72/73 de Barry - W4WB FT817 Group Co-Moderator |
