Re: My FT-817 died :-(

Even without the battery pack, the power remains low. On HF, no power
comes out (according to the FT-817's power bars: 0 bars!). On the
other hand, my power supply shows about 1 A current.

I found a website that some of you are probably already aware of. This
company manufactures a portable 2 element beam made of wire and fiberglass
spreaders. I believe the weight was under 8 pounds, the gain was around
4-6db, and the turning radius less than 10 feet on 20M.

They also have a 5 band beam. I haven't purchased one of these yet, but I've
read more than a few good reports on them. It seems they are comparable to a
trapped 3 elem./3 band yagi in performance, but with a much smaller
footprint. The wire element lengths are full sized, and they're suppose to
quiet like a quad. They also sell collapsible masts for portable op.

If any of you have any experience with these I'd sure appreciate any
comments you might have.
I have tested/compared the 17 meter version with my 4 element 17 meter mono-bander.
It worked remarkably well! It is a bit of a mystery how Mr. Traffie gets a 50 ohm match
WITHOUT any matching sections. baluns, etc.

We have used the 5 band version for field day and had excellent results too.
(It's nice having Mr. Trafffie for a neighbor...)

Yes, it is NOT a cheap antenna, BUT you Do get Quality components.

FWIW, I just got one (assembled) on Ebay. However, it seems not to
like more than about 1 watt or so in my car, as it never
stops on teh low SWR but continues to retune at 2.5 or 5 watts. Works
OK manually. This may be RF feedback, and I am investigating it. Hope
to fix it, as it will make Field Day a bit easier.

One thing about this particular model is, the relays draw current all
the time while energized (the Z-11 uses latching relays), and from a
message I se in the FT-817 (note the dash) group, it may draw 40 ma or
so while in use after it's tuned. So allow for that in your power
budget.

Re: New Antenna for the FT-817 and other QRP portables...

Gents and Ladies...

I'd like to respond to this particular chain of messages...

The Miracle Whip performs as we describe. I invite you to read in
detail on our website at www.miracleantenna.com - in particular the
FAQs - for more information.

Yes, the Miracle Whip is a 50-inch whip and will definitely NOT
outperform or even match the performance of a much bigger antenna -
but then a much bigger antenna is much less convenient for traveling
and operating under casual conditions. We've not as yet seen another
antenna offered for the 817 that incorporates HF, VHF and UHF in a
single, rig-mounted unit with tuner incorporated.

The Miracle Whip is designed for the operator who would like to be
able to operate conveniently, without having to suffer the weight and
set-up time of a larger antenna and tuner, and would like VHF-UHF
included in the package.

We have worked DX under good conditions repeatedly with a Miracle Whip
and the 817 on 20, 17, 15, and 10 meters on SSB, CW and FM.

In short - if you'd like something to take the rig into the living
room, out to the patio, camping for the weekend, over to a friends
place for the afternoon, traveling on business, etc, the Miracle Whip
is a convenient, highly transportable system for getting the most
portablility out of your rig with the minimum of fuss.

If you're more concerned with performance, and less with weight, size,
set-up and convenience, a larger antenna would be a better choice.

If you want a single antenna that allows you to operate HF and
VHF-UHF, and get very good performance CONSIDERING ITS SIZE AND
CONVENIENCE, we believe you would enjoy using a Miracle Whip.

Thank you for allowing this comment.

Not that I am rolling in money ;-) but I like to experiment with new

Walkabout on adapters on the back of the rig and the adapter keeps
swiveling and falling over so I have a book end, a stick and 3 pieces
of string holding it upright...not a very nice looking set-up for
such a great rig! Jo K5HOY

Re: FS: FT-817 + accessories

Peter, I forgot to offer my personal comment about the Walkabout. Unless you
plan to "walk about" foot mobile, bike mobile or other pedestrian mobile,
you probably don't need any of these portable whip antennas. If your going
portable, but fixed operation there are numerous other antennas that work
significantly better and in most cases, cheaper. Anything from Hustler type
mobile antennas, to wire dipoles, to 1/4 wavelength verticals.

The rule of thumb is that the more capture area, the better the performance
of an antenna.

Oh that will happen... and it will prob sell too!

Anyone with a small whip and the ZM-2 can try something close. I have a
tele-whip with a BNC ( from a scanner ) which I've use directly on the
ZM-2... matter of fact it was my travel antenna for hotels before the
PW-1.

((btw, doesn't MFJ sell something like that, a tuner with a direct
mounted whip??))

Anyway, the whip and ZM-2 does work. It takes very good band conditions
and a good ear on the other end.
But then I've almost done WAS on 250mW too. It depends on how you want
to play the game.

Let's not forget this is a hobby.

Miracle Whip Discussion

<snip>
Therefore, in a mood of generosity, one could reasonably conclude
that the offering was *not* made with a straight face.

If it was in earnest, however, it represents an invitation to
disappointment, as anyone could suspect based on experience, and on
the recent exchanges on this and the HFpack list. And if this is
not pertinent to the FT817 discussion, especially at a time when
there is a considerable influx of new users, then what is?

Frank
AB2KT

Frank,

Your points are well made. One role of this Group is served by
discussing antennas potentially useful to use with the FT-817. There
are many interesting ideas floating around. Many show up for
discussion in such groups as AntenneX ().

In no way do it think this offering is a joke. To the contrary, I
have the feeling they are serious and believe they have developed
something special. This is based upon an off-list communication.

Since the basic antenna design is reportedly going to be presented in
an article in the July QST, we should have a better idea if this is a
viable antenna or not after reading the article. Perhaps QST will
show up later this week. For my part, I have low expectations for
this being a miracle Miracle Whip, but more likely another short,
base-loaded whip that radiates, at best, very modestly. Note that
they don't recommend a countrpoise except in the comm to me, and he
said that a ground on 160 and 80 m may be of benefit. Oh my!

Rationale discussion is encouraged, but rudness is to be avoided.

I just did the Green Wire mod on my FT-817 this morning, and I found
that popping out the green wire with a pin was easier than I had
expected.
Before doing it, I checked the information in the FAQ, and it says
there are three wires, one green, one black and one red.
Interestingly enough, I have FIVE wires: one green, two black and two
red. I presume the pos and neg lines are doubled (parallel) to reduce
the voltage drop and current loss.
My white plastic connector is a five pin. Could it be I have a
newer or different version of the rig here in Australia? Or does
everybody actually have five wires (but three shared connections)?
