Re: NVIS Saturday afternoon test

John O. Newell

I think most of your answers would be answered in Feilder's and
Farmer's book "Near Vertical Incidence Skywave Communications --
Theory, Techniques and Validation". I highly recommend it.
Jim --

Yes, I think we will continue experimenting!

Thanks for the reminder. In fact, I have a copy of the book
you mentioned, but it had slipped far down in the reading
pile. I skimmed it, quite late last night, and will start
reading it. It looks very good. Among the points I noticed
skimming last night...

- the author says that, based on reports from many stations
over a number of years, low power stations can confidently
expect to succeed with NVIS; the rub is that "low power" is
400w <g> and he says operators of 20w backpack radios often
have great difficulty...

- the AS2259-type antenna that Keith N1XTK and I were using
does indeed, as I had recalled, rate pretty low compared to
other types

- the author(s) suggest that the best antenna for NVIS may
in fact be ye goode olde dipole (or , if the angle is not
too great, an inverted Vee) at low fractions to the ground,
possibly with a reflector below at a measured distance.

If you compare my main antenna to their recommendations, on
40 and 80 it pretty much fills the bill (with the exception
of the reflector element). This reminds me of an
observation in an article I read recently on NVIS for packet
radio, in which someone was quoted as saying that there are
a whole lot more NVIS antennas out there than most people
suppose!

So, more to read -- this book looks like an engaging and
profitable read, so thanks to Jim VE3XJ!

I bought an N connector elbow so that when I use the rubber duck, it stick
straight up
when the radio is on a table with speaker firing upward.

The connector when onto the FT-817 fine, but the rubber duck will not for
the life of me go onto the other end
of the elbow. Paid $5.00 for this one; thought it was good. Am I doing
something wrong or is the tolerance of this
antenna too tight for anything but the most on-spec elbow?

Anyone else have this problem? Know of a known N elbow source/part number
that works?

I bought my used & already assembled. It is *very* easy to
calibrate. Has a calibration procedure/capabailaity built into the
unit. You adjust a pot for a specified voltage & three more pots for
a fixed output reading. Very easy...takes about two minutes.

The unit is well designed and appears to be quite accurate on all
three reading scales. (10W, 1W, 100mW)

The LDG digital wattmeter looks interesting also! I have yet to try

Re: Counterpoise Kit for ATX Walkabout

Jeffrey Steinberg

Ken,

Started assembly. I messed one up (I inserted it ok) but the crimp did not
hold and the wire came out. So I used
the extraction tool and as indicated and twisted and pried the connector off
the spring and got it out. Recrimped (came out OK)
but it doesn't engage into the powerpole as strongly as before. Did I ruin
the spring? Any ideas or do I have to buy some
replacements?

Polls

It's unfortunate that an interesting question gets dumped due to one or two
going off on a tangent.
I was keen to see just where many of these radios had turned up and I don't
think this poll was less FT817 specific than one of the first regarding the 'tip'
for instance.
Now it seems we've lost the poll results. (I can't find them on site...)

At least this was fresh and new unlike the endless discussion of MP? &
ATX? antennas (shouldn't they be in an antenna group....).
As many have said before this is a fine medium and group for info regarding
our loved little rig.
Does it really matter if some-one is general in their descriptions for a general
question?

As for my 817 in NZ I've had it to the repair twice; once for failed dc socket
and once for frying the silicon itty-bits around the socket.
The latter to not!! having fused both legs of the lead.... yeah I know.
I've had a lot of fun with it as we all have seemed to.

As some-one else recently posted I got it for a portable (2nd) rig and all-
mode higher frequencies (my first 6m rig/contact) and due to earlier
discussion about broad-banding the tx am now intrigued about micro-wave
use as well.
And so the hobby goes....

All my contacts have been 5w with dipoles (at home) and cover all hf bands
(cw) and the world; though not as much of the latter as I would like! :)

I was urged by a friend to try building my own filter and he got a couple of the
500hz collins filters to build up as per instructions from early on this list if I
remember right.
Being a new ham it was a step but a heap of fun. Makes a great difference.
An alternative to Yaseu or Inrad... funny more haven't commented on that.

As stated many times before; pause before replying, no-one posts to irritate
tho some replys would beggar that belief.

Re: 817 Amps

He may or may not be interested in an Amp of this magnitude but I have used
the FT-817 to drive my Ten-Tec Hercules II solid state linear. It varies a
little from band to band but will put out up to 150 watts with the 5 watts
drive. Herc II's are no longer manufactured but Ten-Tec still services them
and they can be found in the used marketplace.

I found this discussion of interest at the EHam Elmers forum:

<<<I was wondering if there were any recommendations for amplifiers
that work with the FT-817. I'm a rank beginner, and QRP DX-ing is
probably a bit beyond me. I'd like something that can take my 2.5 - 5
W and give me more like 35 - 50. My guess is that any HF frequencies
would do. This would be for a base station setup with a serious
antenna (maybe a yagi or dipole).

RE: Amplifier for FT-817 Reply
I'd recommend the Communications Concepts (CCI) amps, like model
#EB63 (as an example). These are kits, not factory built, but come
with good instructions and all the parts to build into an amplifier
except for the heat sink and chassis, which you can buy from Radio
Shack or many other sources.

I built an EB63 twelve years ago, and it still works perfectly! It is
a very robust design, based on a famous Motorola Engineering Bulletin
(#EB63!). CCI sells many other HF amps, from 20W output to 1000W
output, also based on Motorola Applications Notes or Engineering
Bulletins, so they have quite a variety of models to choose from --
all of which are attractively priced. Although not quite as easy
as "Heathkits" (darn it), the CCI kits are easy to assemble for
anyone with any level of homebrewing or kitbuilding experience.

The EB63, for example, produces 100W output for 5W drive power, and
can run up to 140W output (with about 7-8W drive power) before it
saturates, and requires only a standard 12-14Vdc power supply,
nothing unusual. It also contains RF-sensed T/R switching, so a
separate "amplifier key" line is not required.

There are many other options available, from other sources, but I
like this one.

Have fun with the 817!

ATX Walkabout Antenna Help

I have an ATX Walkabout antenna but having a hard time
tuning to a low swr. I have it connected to the rear
SO 239 connector. I am using a 1/4 wave counterpoise
attached to the radio. It seems very sensitive to
tuning and I am wondering what other have done for
easy tuning to low swr and maximum output with the

Just goes to show, as antennas go, resonance and match do not mean
efficient radiation. Many wild configurations of shortened antennas
are possible, and while interesting to experiment with, they are not
efficient enough to provide worthwhile communications on HF with the

Don't know if the DCTL antenna has been discussed yet. It's a

tune
it down to 80m.

Granted, it is a single band antenna, but you can build one for
each
band you want to work. Given the material used, several antennas
would take up little space once rolled up.

I've since misplaced that issue of CQ, but stumbled upon a web site
that has all the details of construction.

Hopefully I can find the one I built and compare!

Good luck!
