Battery pack?

Gary Mitchelson

Can you tell if there is an Internal Battery pack? There was a reference to
running it off AA batteries.
Or is there a external clip on pack ala FTx90R-II's.

So far by enlarging the brochure on Word I could decipher a few new infos

First and foremost the rig has a built in keyer, a swr metre, some kind
of input for packet,RTTY, and PSK31, IPO,attenuator, and IF shift.Plus
the unit can be operated from 8 to 16V as does the Ft290/690/790. Also
the VOX and CAT system are present. The options inlude a TXCO, a CW,and
SSB filtres , a battery pack, and a DTMF mic among others. Maybe one of
you computer whizz could enlarge the specs section and let us know what
kind of numbers it reveals.

Well they would, conversion puts the price between 500 and 700,
new buy's (must have's) will be screwed as usual....Worked for the
soggy moggie co way back, 208 factory gate price ~75, import
duty etc add 50 reasonable profit 100% mark-up MINIMUM....Of
course the UK is a small market (the usual retailers claim).

methinks a call to my man in tokyo is in order ;-)

tx consumption

Just another thought the stated tx draw is 1.8amps this is i presume
for 5 watts out if in this case ur using batt pack (stated 2watts
out) the draw will be about 8-900ma giving an even longer time
between portable charges !! if so its better than i thought
Incidentally I suggested to Mr Sam Ruddy @ Yaesu uk about 6 months
ago for them to manufactur a 10w version of FT100 with the
probability of an add on linear as the FT290r mkII so as to do away
with the bulk, the fan and 100w stages which would make a very small
qrp ideal rig he said there is no market for this ....... low and
behold the FT817 is imminent. Strange that isnt it.

Rubber duck I would have thought should cover ALL BANDS for the
simple reason Yaesu are clever people using 5w max you can get a lot
of thin wire in a ducky only thin required for qrp.
if you want to crank up the power stick with ur FT100 1-100w!!
have ben told its a FT100 in a qrp version.
RX consumption is 150ma or 450ma max audio.
TX is 1.8Amps 5w.
If you look at yaesu pic (with ant out M socket at rear) it shows the
lcd on without orange or blue light hence will switch out.
there shouldnt be any need for fan, your average 5w handy is plastic
cased not needing 1 the FT817 ia exactly same size as 2 Yupiteru
MVT7100 scanners side by side with a aluminium chassis so it will
definitley not need one, also rx consumption says this.
I have a few other points to make but will drop another message
shortly.

good group see you soon John G0VGZ Durham England
PS to be released in Japan end Sept US Dec and maybe also UK
depending if EU has been passed.

Hmmm... the first priced listed was about 120,000 JPY, which
would've put the radio at about $1050 USD. This sounded a bit high
for this radio. This new price puts it at about $775 USD. This sounds
like a better price for this radio.

Now lets hope that the value of the USD to the JPY goes up between
now and the time they start to ship this radio to see if the price of
the radio goes down even more.

Well,
I'm sure it doesn't have a physical fan but it sure has plenty on

I would be very surprised if the FT817 has a FAN!!!!

Re: FT-817 Cool(ing)

Hi Mike,
I doubt that there will be any fans on this rig..... It only runs 5
watts and is meant to be portable NOT a mobile radio, but one you would carry
so a fan would be not only a big draw of precious current from the batteries
but not required at all!

I guess we know who is on the cutting edge of technology. I bet they read
our comments. I hope the cooling fans on the FT-817 are quieter than the
FT-100 and D. the fans on the FT-90 are some what better and you can
custom program them. Hopefully on the 817 RX there will be no fan, just an
adequate heat sink. nothing blows worse that having a fan come on when i'm
trying to copy some weak signal. Difficult to see but looks like a fan
shrouding on the back of the rig to me. Any body have any comments or
information?

The message <000e01c0120b$792ff460$12212940@pavilion>

I did hear rumor from a G-land ham that it could be modified for their
service that is similar to our CAP, which uses frequencies just outside the
ham frequencies.

Now I am intrigued! I've spent the last 10 years in disaster management
and SAR with the UK equivalent of FEMA, and I've never come across
this organisation!

Looking at the product itself it seems to me that they are going the
FT290/609/790 road. Therefore we might expect a greatly reliable product.
Even though this time I would like to have Yaesu to listen to our
suggestions instead of costly after market mods.
