Re new addition to files section

Hi all Finally got a mini dv cam so I have took a couple of stills of
my 817 homebrew case (case cost about 50 pence UK sterling)using a
bit of imitation thin leather and a 3" x 1" piece of clear flexi
plastic (for looking at the display) for the techno guys the cam is a
Panasonic NVSD55 with multimedia card so apologies for the resolution
(actually I dont think it takes bad pics). You can find the pics in
the Files section in Pres's Case ideas file under G0VGZ.

Re: Repeater offsets

Do what I did, I bought a US version, ALL repeater offsets,
frequencies etc are different over here. I just programmed all our
repeater freqs in memories. mod problem solved.

Well, think of it this way. When you do the TX-anywhere mod, you
lose
country information. Therefore if ARS is on, it gives a simplex
offset no
matter where you are. If you turn ARS OFF, then whatever repeater
shift you
last selected is what you have. Pretty much like NO ARS at all.

Another way, a mod'd radio has no ARS and don't try to turn it on.

How do you use the shift capability to program the two different bands into
the same memory? I've tried to figure this one out with the program and just
do not understand.

I was also not being critical. It's just that you (Bob) keep improving the

MESSAGE FOR ALVIN M NORRIS W8UJM

Dear Alvin,

As a brand new FT-817 owner be sure to pick up the aftermarket "pack-it
reference for the FT-817." This is a little yellow book that grossly
simplifies the complexity of the FT-817 microprocessor system. Yaesu should
have hired the writer of this manual to prepare the OEM manual that came with
the rig.

Re: Cloning Software vs FTBasic

Hi Duffy,

I think what Brian is referring to is that you can use some of the
200 memories in the 817 memories with satellite cross-band
frequencies using Split as the shift (not + or -) and set up say 5
memories for doppler compensation as suggested in the appendix of
the FT-817 operating manual. This you can do now.

Whereas you are waiting for FTBasic's own memories to have a cross-
band capability, and then for FTBasic to do doppler shift tuning
for you.

Thank you Brian for your generous words.

I was sold defective software for my FT-817, anyone want to violate the software license and send me the update?

RT systems has ignored my request and I really do not want to wait the entire weekend to get my update for my FT-817 software!

This is typical of the crappy service you receive these days. "Pay us money and we will take our time fixing your problems"

Re: FT-817 carry case

I believe I have the same case which says "Mudd" as the manufacture.
5 bucks at Dayton. If he'd set up set up shop next to HRO they'd have
sold out even at $29.99. I can't imagine a better bag anywhere. We're
out looking for a place to attach the Yaesu strap to it. I
contemplated loading up and selling them on E-Bay.

For those with an MFJ or other antenna analyzer that can measure
reactive impedance, it is possible to identify feedline Z with a
simple test. First, find a frequency at which an open piece of
feedline looks like an open quarter wave stub; it will read as a
short. Then reduce the frequency to one half of that value. The
capacitive impedance shown will equal the characteristic impedance of
the line. (The input reactance of a 1/8 wave stub is equal in value to
its characteristic impedance.)

My MFJ has a "coax loss" mode, but I have yet to use it. THe ARRL
publications I've seen lamp or speaker cord mentioned in suggest that
it wil have much higher loss than coax.

ADSP and sidetone problems

I bought an SGC external ADSP unit, with built in speaker, very nice
package with impressive performance, a couple of years ago. However,
when it is processing, it delays audio about 125 msec. This renders CW
sidetone unusable and my sending more unintelligible than usual
(grin). There IS a PTT input line on it, which I've not tried; perhaps
that disables processing during transmit.

For anyone else using an audio DSP unit, be aware processing may
affect your sidetone and provide for another source if it does.

If you have your heart set on weather there is always the Yeasu VX-5R. I
got it as a in your pocket backup to my FT-817, because it covers the UHF
mil air band. Between the 2 of them I got coverage from 100Khz to 999Mhz. AS
well the 5R has 10 built in weather channels.

I'm not sure why everyone wishes to complicate their lives (and radios!)
with converters, add-ons, etc when Radio Shack (at least here in Canada)
sell a small portable transistor radio size WeatherRadio.

It covers those freq set at 162 Mhz and is very small. In my mind, I'm
very
happy that the 817 does not have wider receive. Where I live I get bad
enough "intermod" as is without having more squawks, pagers, etc to listen

The whole thing is actually interesting.

Very similar to what I did with my modified RS back-of-set antenna and
then with a radio-mounted MP-1. First adjust for noise, then adjust
for SWR. One caution others have raised is that the FT-817 SWR null
may not be set for 50 ohms so the "SWR" seen isn't acutally what we
might think it is. However, if the antenna is accepting power and the
transmitter is not turning itself down with ALC, the result is the
same.
