Re: QRPp or better?

My guess is its customised to 150 or 300mw it has 3 or 4 settings,
however a set like this will surely wind down internally to
milliwatts not being like the FT100/IC706 and only having a 10w amp I
would have thought it shouldnt be a problem. another thought is use
lowest dc current in possible 8v ?? may reduce it further. this will
also reduce heat dissipation from components as opposed to using
13.8v. keeping case cool (that's if it does get warm at all on rx).

Re: 450mA???

Cannot remember where I seen figures but it should, if I remember
correctly draw 150ma on low to medium vol levels ok if you have cans
on or are listening with a quiet background. But also bear in mind
most handies draw similair currents and run of approx 4 AA cells ,
the 817 has 8 AA cells. Personally this has not deterred me in the
slightest. Thank goodness Yaesu have had the decency to add an AA
holder as opposed to a custom sealed ni-cd pack or similair. We all
know the AA battery is now an industry standard in most applications,
the technology is slowing to ideas of shrinking components with low
consumption. This leaves it wide open to battery manufacturers to
take over. Again watch this space , My guess is that we will see an
AA Li-on cell with voltage to 1.5v as opposed to 3.6v (as present)
with excellent amps per hour possibilities, hence a good life for all
us FT817 user's.
Regard's John.

I guess the numbers make sense. About 3 watts dissipated at full
volume
(1 watt or so of audio out).
Anyone?

If the receive current of the ft-817 is truly 450mA as our
friend
from
Japan has said, I seriously doubt I'll buy one. I had heard
earlier
that
the receive current was around 150mA.
I wonder why the disparity in these numbers?

That's pretty high alright, but about what I expected. I'll probably buy
one, but as more of a "pocket 847" rather than a serious manpack/QRP rig. I
already have plenty of those anyway, although I'm always on the lookout for
another.

FW: ARLB039 ARRL seeks monitoring reports on 10 and 12 meters

here is some information or a survey for 10 meter intruders (bootleggers and
such). This will help them show how much illegal activity is on the band.

SB QST ARL ARLB039
ARLB039 ARRL seeks monitoring reports on 10 and 12 meters

In an effort to better document the extent of unlicensed operation
on Amateur Radio frequencies, particularly 10 meters, the IARU
Region 2 Monitoring System is surveying member societies about the
extent of the problem. In order to provide statistical backing for
its response, ARRL is soliciting reports from American hams to
supplement its response to the survey.

ARRL Monitoring System Administrator Brennan Price, N4QX, is
accepting reception reports from amateurs for a two-week period,
from October 1 to October 14. Observations should include date and
time in UTC, frequency, mode of the transmission, language, if
known, and any notes which might assist in identifying the source.
Observations should also be limited to amateur frequencies, focusing
on 10 and 12 meters.

Price urges monitors to use caution before documenting a
transmission as probably unlicensed. ''Most countries do not mandate
a segregation of voice and digital modes, as the United States
does,'' Price says. ''A phone transmission between 28.0 and 28.3
MHz is not necessarily illegal in the country where that
transmission occurs, and if valid amateur call signs can be made
out, the transmission should not be reported. However, lower
sideband and AM transmissions between 28.0 and 28.1 MHz are usually
unlicensed, and may be treated with suspicion.''

Reports should be e-mailed to Price at n4qx@.... All reports
will be acknowledged, and respondents will receive a summary of the
survey results via email.
