I guess it hasn't been a secret but I didn't realize until
I read this page that the 817 does NOT cover 6 meters.

This will be a bummer to those VHF ops planning to take it
hilltoping during contests, and assumed, as I did, that it
was like a QRP FT-100.

You're absolutely right, Cameron. I've still got a "Docking Booster" which
I've always used with an old Icom IC-32, and into which the handheld slots,
via an Adaptor Plate which attaches onto the battery fitting. Obviously, a
different plate is needed for every style of battery top fitting, but that is
hardly a major problem. In fact, there actually wasn't one in the range for the
IC-32, and I had to adapt one from a different Icom model.

I suppose that the recent trend towards using cellphone batteries attached
to the rear of an H-T case would now represent a problem, but that certainly
wasn't the case when the Booster was being sold.

The concept obviously works best with an H-T which has it's controls (and
especially the display) on the "top" panel, but it's been no great problem
using it with the IC-32.

The unit has switchable high (from memory it's 35 watts V and 25 watts U)
and low power, and a switchable pre-amp. In fact, this unit and the IC-32
may reluctantly have to be sold if I decide to order an FT-817 (readers all
over the world are now saying "If? Yeah, right!").

The point is that this unit, which I believe is now unobtainable, was virtually
never advertised in the UK, and still attracts amazed comments from hams
with wide experience of many different handheld and mobile rigs. Well, why
would you, if yo can sell a ham a mobile rig AND an H-T...

That is where the rubber meets the road. (Sorry, tires are in the news too
much lately.)

I think everyone needs to calm down a bit.

If Yaesu is monitoring this group, and it's a pretty sure thing that they
are, I would not blame them to ratchet up the price a couple hundred
dollars. That's just based on the enthusiastic response to the FT-817
before it's even legally acceptable to be sold in the US.

You know, I want one too. But sheeze, I have a feeling that when some of
you folks get yours delivered, you are going to get a room with it. I
mean, I haven't heard this much excitement since Michael Jackson thought
he got booked at Boy's Town.

So settle down. We'll end up getting Yaesu to rush the 817 to market and
then all us early adapters will end up shipping them off to Ceritoes for
mods and patches like the FT-100.

My priority questions on the FT817 woud be.....................

Minimum tx pwr ? 50mw then 250 500 1w 2w 5w ??

Current drain on the above ??

Does it get warm on rx ?
(it is small and the 100 & 706 does,and they are ventilated)

How warm on tx ?

Are both the front (top) bnc & rear So239 inter-linked ie. do both do
either ? (that sounds confusing) ed. what I mean is 160m-70cm at the
front and 160-70cm at rear so you have a choice (I hope its not just
vhf bnc & hf rear!!!

Cannot see any sort of auto atu in there unless theyre more cunning
than we thought ??

Does it have same 3 position equalising dsp based speech system as on
the FT100 ??

anyhow thats enough to be going on with I think Pres how about you ?
and as Pres says how are u going to use yours.........answers on a
postcard please to...............(another bit of english humour.
